I'm sure he'll be a big wheel in the NSK.

The kanji for "O" is actually 尾 which stands for tail or I would think it also as fin as in from a fish

I like to think of 尾車 as “caboose”.

Kotoeko is Oguruma oyakata now.

Does he get to own it outright or is he just loaning the kabu?

The Kyokai added him to the relevant pages today, and he's listed in an owner spot.

(For completeness, the original notice was here. Is keisho-shumei no longer a thing, or does that only appear for guys who move from loaner to owner now...?)

As of the 27th, Hochiyama changed from to Dekiyama to Tatsutagawa (after Homasho vacated it to be  now Shikoroyama). The NSK announced it today http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2024/05/28/0017704593.shtml

- But does he own the kabu now? the NSK list of duties still has him as Dekiyama, below Kotoeko https://www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokai/rijikai/

Tatsutagawa is from a different ichimon - the Sakaigawa-beya Dekiyama kabu - Myogiryu needs it

The kabu stuff goes way over my head, but can we assume from this that Myogiryu's retirement is imminent?

There's usually a shuffle like this before someone retires, in this case I'd bet on Myogiryu but there are several it could be.

The only other possible big-name retirement that springs to mind would be Aoiyama. He is nearly 38 and has Japanese citizenship and he isn't going to be returning to maku'uchi unless the sky falls down.

Aoiyama rekindled his fighting spirit later in the basho and nearly got kachikoshi, Myogiryu on the other hand looked like this the whole basho:

Myogiryu looks like he's given up on his career. Endo on the other hand is poised to return, fully motivated by the hopes of the Noto locals.

Myogiryu has no intention to retire yet

Sakaigawa-beya veterans in the focus by Hochi:

Sadanoumi (37) did the basics: "37 is just a number"

not retiring Myogiryu (37) lent is chest in butsukari: "I forgot (the basho). I'm going towards Nagoya" "Aiming for the yusho" "A drop to juryo at 37 with 70 basho in makuuchi and 3-12 makekoshi (and not retiring) - like the makujiri yusho of Tokushoryu, nobody experienced it before." "I'm preparing like always"

He'll definetely quit if he falls to makushita, but apparently not before. Sadanoumi is safe in makuuchi - the 3rd 37 year old, same ichimon Aoiyama may be the first to retire, but I doubt he'll get a kabu of his own - when Myogiryu goes, he'll take it.

That reminds me that I meant to express my confusion over Myogiryu getting linked to the Dekiyama share around here. Surely the standing assumption is still that he's going to become Furiwake, what with him having been mentioned as purchasing it last year?

My guess for Dekiyama is also Aoiyama, for what that's worth.

Tier 1: Aoiyama, Kagayaki, Tamawashi

Tier 2: Ryuden, Takanosho, Takayasu

Tier 3: (gulp) Takakeisho?

As posted by @Kaninoyama on the thread below, Iwatomo (ex-Kimurayama) has sadly passed.

The Iwatomo share thus presumably goes to his family as usual, until a loan/transfer transaction is agreed on.

Nishonoseki ichimon this time - who will retire next?

The painful last guess is what our favourite sumo tabloid Weekly Post is hinting at http://www.news-postseven.com/archives/20240726_1980346.html

As heya successor not he, but Takanosho is said to be preferred by the oyakata. It is believed that Takakeisho obtained the Minatogawa kabu - Minatogawa leaving early to make room for the Nishonoseki ichimon ozeki. Takakeisho already lives with his wife in a former heya, the building of Hatachiyama-beya of his late father-in-law, which still has the dohyo.

tabloid Weekly Post reports that Takakeisho moved out of his apartment and to Hokutenyu's old Hatachiyama-beya, apparently only her family home now, but it is said that it still has the dohyo -  so he is an ozeki with his own heya now, to properly train also at home.

Tabloid Asahi Geinou also reports that Takakeisho has obtained Minatogawa, has plenty of rich tanimachi to sponsor his future heya - and will retire, if he fails to get 10 next basho https://www.asagei.com/excerpt/315530

I'd both hate (since he's my favorite) and love it if he'd follow through with going intai failing to get 10 wins. I like it better when (former) ozeki who can't wrestle at the required level anymore quit right away instead of hanging on and finally retire after falling down to juryo or makushita. It's really sad watching a long, slow decline of a former champion unfolding on the dohyo.

I know what you mean. Goeido went up in my estimations simply because of the way he called time on his career.

Oddly, though, I don't mind Mitakeumi and Shodai hanging around.

The way they've written it; does it sound like his plan is to have his own heya, or is this just conjecture?

For all the good traits Takakeisho has as a competitor, it's always felt like he's a lone wolf. I can't picture him as a leading figure for a bunch of youngsters and would much sooner suspect it'd just be an annoyance for him.

And judging by the allegation that Tokiwayama wants Takanosho to succeed him, he might not be too convinced either.

I don't think Takakeisho is short on self-confidence or self-esteem. I could see him wanting his own stable, whether it's a good idea or not.

I dunno, people claimed much the same thing about Kisenosato - typical jock who knows nothing beyond his own sumo. And then he turned out to be an excellent observer of and commentator on the sport, went to university to broaden his horizons and is now seen as one of the more progressive forces in the Kyokai. Anyway, Takakeisho always comes across as pretty self-aware to me, and of course he's not the "natural talent" type of top rikishi, so at the very least I think he would be the kind of shisho who can empathize with deshi who don't have success come easy to themselves. And with his high profile as the most successful Japanese rikishi of the last ~7 years, I doubt he'd be hurting for talent interested in joining up.

I don't know how much sense the Takanosho-as-next-Tokiwayama idea makes anyway; Takanosho's career realistically still has 5+ years of life in it, but the stable needs a successor in a year and a half. But even beyond that, ex-Takamisugi's alleged preference might just be based on the fact that Takanosho is homegrown while Takakeisho came in with the Takanohana-beya refugees.

Could be because they're what you could call accidental ozeki -- peaked with their promotions and never reached the same heights again. Also their tenures were short and relatively unremarkable so they'd feel natural at maegashira level.

Asahisho switched from Kiriyama to Furiwake as of July 29th https://www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokaiInformation/detail?id=657

Kiriyama for Terunofuji...? The retired owner of the kabu was affiliated to Isegahama-beya in his last few years. (And fought out of the previous Isegahama-beya, though I feel that's rather irrelevant now.)

In any case, it's an odd move to make unless further developments are imminent for the Kiriyama name, considering Furiwake has "ejection seat" written all over it with the way Myogiryu's career has been going lately...
