What's the youngest that a future oyakata has retired at?

Ushiomaru comes to mind after he was hand picked by Takamiyama to succeed Azumazeki beya.

Tokitsuumi also had a premature retirement due to the Tokitsukaze hazing scandal.

Both had already passed age 30 when they retired - but still pretty young.

I remember Kongo retired at the age of 28, but I'm not sure if he was the youngest ever.

Think he was 27 actually. Daiju (ex-Asahiyama Oyakata) was also 27 when he retired.

Ripped from the DB in a not very elegant way, so I can't vouch for complete accuracy: Oyakata taking on their first kabu before age 30. Does not include double license periods (i.e. active rikishi executing kabu rights).

Since 1958 - rikishi marked * didn't make it to the contemporary eligibility standards:

26y  1m  1972  S   Fujinokawa
26y  7m  1969  S   Wakamiyama
26y  8m  1976  M2  Yoshioyama

27y  1m  1977  O   Daiju
27y  5m  1967  M9  Matsumaeyama*
27y  7m  1967  M3  Udagawa
27y  9m  1976  S   Kongo

28y  1m  1976  M7  Teruzakura
28y  1m  1978  M5  Chiyozakura
28y  3m  1974  M3  Tochifuji
28y  6m  1968  S   Kairyuyama
28y  6m  1985  O   Kotokaze
28y  6m  1989  K   Hananoumi

Modern era before 1958 - most of these weren't anywhere near the contemporary standards, even accounting for them having fewer tournaments per year:

25y 10m  1949  M21 Hakunozan
27y  0m  1941  M15 Genjiyama
27y  8m  1935  M12 Raizan
27y  8m  1942  M19 Wakanami [age at retirement; first kabu taken on one year later]
27y 10m  1942  M5  Kojimagawa
28y  5m  1931  M2  Hoshikabuto
28y  7m  1950  S   Kamikaze

29y  0m  1953  J7  Yamatonishiki
29y  1m  1940  K   Tomoegata
29y  5m  1954  S   Fudoiwa

Furthermore, three of the eight re-employed oyakata have an expanded job description of "Lifestyle Guidance (in charge of etiquette education)" now, namely Dekiyama, Oshima and Oyama. I'm looking forward to finding out what that will entail specifically...

It was mentioned in a short article about a week ago, which mentioned they will be giving instruction on attire and greetings. Oyama served at the sumo school for a long time, while Oshima was director of it in the last few years of his regular oyakata service if I recall correctly. Dekiyama is apparently known for his strictness.

This etiquette trio started to work this basho. They are patrolling the kokugikan as a team and individually observe the attire and behavior of  rikishi and oyakata also in the area around the kokugikan and in the trains in which they arrive to work. Their duties are to give (gentle) reminders and call for attention.

Dekiyama: "We'll be watching over the proper manners on the dohyo up to the attitude in daily life. Everything from the point of view of the visitors", targeting conduct that causes discomfort or appears disagreeable.

Chunichi reports that Endo became the new owner of the vacant Kitajin myoseki as of the 26th. (Not retiring though, before anyone asks)

Interesting that the share has gone to another ichimon. Kind of surprising considering the heya of the previous holder has a rikishi (Shohozan) who may not be ages away from needing one.

Is the whole ichimon structure even alive anymore, or is it turning into a hollow tradition?

It certainly does feel sometimes that it just matters for ceremonial stuff, training sessions and the biennial elections now.

Tanigawa-oyakata (fomer Sekiwake Hokutoriki) has moved from Hakkaku-beya to Kokonoe-beya, Nikkan reports.

Guess I might as well copy the apparent Ikioi-owning-Kasugayama news over here so the marriage thread doesn't get side-tracked:
