He's a bloke. Do you honestly believe ideas never crossed his mind when he saw Asashoryu's 2nd wife?

Shimanoumi (32) announced his engagement today - to the eldest daughter of the late Sakahoko (Izutsu), Chihana Amasaki (stage name, 34) 天咲千華 a former Takarazuka singer

They first met in October. After leaving the Takarazuka stage, she worked as a yoga instructor.

Today Shimanoumi and (real name) Sayaka (Fukuzono) had the wedding reception with about 560 guests, especially from Dewanoumi ichimon. They registered the marriage yesterday, the birthday of the late Sakahoko, today is Father's day in Japan.

The majority of countries that celebrate some day as Father's Day celebrate it today.  By my count on the Wikipedia article, over 90 celebrate it today, while roughly 70 celebrate it other days.

Is it me, or is it just an astounding wonder of nature that girls can take after their distinctly unimpressive looking dads and still be pretty?

Just looking to be educated here: what's the hammer and wood thing for? Is this a tradition like jumping the broom or lighting a unity candle?

Or breaking open a keg of sake.

I see.... Thanks! I found a website that elaborated more:

"Japanese sake barrel opening ceremony, kagami biraki 鏡開き, has been a tradition since 300 years ago. What first started as a blessing and tradition for the fourth Tokugawa Shogun when he won the war, it is now currently used at various major events like weddings, New Year, sporting events and any significant event that is worthy to be celebrated. Most commonly, it is performed at opening ceremonies and companies' anniversaries."

learned something new today.

Shimanoumi has 18 basho in Makuuchi, and at M8 with a 7-8 he'll get his 20; 8 basho in Juryo, so he'll get 30 basho as Sekitori.  If he is inheriting Izutsu, he already has enough basho to qualify anyway.

Aye, that they do, but that's beside the point. She looks like her dad to me.

For inheritance of an existing heya he has enough makuuchi basho (12/20 m+j) - he could rename it Izutsu-beya later - but who would chose HIM as successor. His wife wants to be okamisan, but he'll hardly ever qualify for reopening Izutsu-beya by himself (60 in makuuchi).

The daughter likes to become okamisan of a heya, but Shimanoumi is far from having enough makuuchi basho.

Whether or not he reopens Izutsu, which ichimon will he be considered to belong to? His "home" ichimon is Dewanoumi, but Izutsu has been a Tokitsukaze staple for ages except for the brief period under Kitanofuji's ownership.
