Kintamayama 44,220 Posted April 10, 2007 (edited) Musashigawa Oyakata will be 60 on February 4th, 2008. He will be having his kanreki dohyo-iri (ex-Yokozuna reaching 60 gets to do an "I'm still healthy" dohyo-iri as an honor) on June 16th at a local hotel. He will be the 8th one to do it. Ex-Yokozunae who are still with the Kyokai have the privilege of doing it at the KKan, non-Kyokai guys have to do it elsewhere. Musashigawa is a senior executive with the Kyokai board, so naturally, it should be at the Kkan. But it won't . "It's really embarrassing..", he explained, opting for the hotel. It will be held as a part of Musashigawa beya's 25th anniversary party, making it even a smaller "deal". "Just view it as a private affair.. I do promise, however, to practice diligently so as not to embarrass myself..", he added. Former kanreki-ers had other former Yokozunas do the tachimochi and tsuyuharai duty, but Musashigawa Oyakata will be using Miyabiyama and Dejima. 27 years after his retirement, we will see an unryuu-gata dohyo iri from Yokozuna Mienoumi. Jakusotsu 5,739 Posted April 10, 2007 Musashigawa Oyakata will be using Miyabiyama and Dejima. Does that mean Dejima isn't allowed to retire before Haru Basho 2008?
Chiyozakura 128 Posted April 10, 2007 I always thought only Dai-Yokozuna would do kanreki-dohyo-iri. If my memory serves me right Tochinoumi did not do one as was the case with Sadanoyama. Mienoumi won only three yusho and retired after 8 basho as Yokozuna so it seems quite obvious as to why there is no kanreki for him at the Kokugikan.

The article clearly states it was his decision to do it at a hotel, although it is surely possible that the reporter has no clue.. He is actually totally puzzled as to why it isn't at the Kkan, and attributes it to Musashigawa's being modest. Is there any former instance of an ex-non-dai-yokozuna doing a kanreki dohyo-iri, anywhere?

Is there any former instance of an ex-non-dai-yokozuna doing a kanreki dohyo-iri, anywhere? Well, no... Personally I don't think there is any even unwritten rule that stops Musashigawa from doing it in the Kokugikan, other than possibly that he himself thinks only dai-Yokozuna should do it there. But then again, ALL kanreki-yokozunae were more or less dai-yokozuna (depending on ones definition of dai-yokozuna), so if he had a problem with that, he probably wouldn't have done it at all. Previous kanreki: Tachiyama, Tochigiyama, Tsunenohana, Tochinishiki, Wakanohana, Taiho, Kitanofuji
Chiyozakura 128 Posted April 10, 2007 Interesting to see that Kitanofuji did one when he had already left the NSK. Maybe we will see even one of Wajima? He will turn 60 in 2008, too. Were all kanreki done at the Kokugikan and its predecessors and is Mienoumi thus a first to do it at a hotel?

Jonosuke 28 Posted April 10, 2007 I believe those who can perform the Kanreki Dohyo-iri at the Kokugikan are only selected yokozuna so acknowledged by the Kyokai itself of their contribution. They will have two yokozuna accompanying and performing Tachimochi and Tsuyuharai for them. I think the next ones likely be Kitanoumi and Chiyonofuji. Neither of them were in the Kyokai when turning 60, while all the others were, and also did their kanreki in the (respective) Kokugikan. Mienoumi would be the first ex-yokozuna still in the Kyokai to do his kanreki at a restaurant. Edited April 10, 2007 by Yubiquitoyama
Kintamayama 44,220 Posted April 10, 2007 doesn't look like the Kokugikan .... Could be a rehearsal, could be a room in the KKan, but this was written by our very own Jonosuke circa June 8th 2000: At the Ryogoku Kokugikan on June 8, Taiho oyakata (yokozuna Taiho, real name Koki Naya, originally from Hokkaido) has performed his "kanreki" dohyo-iri ceremony, accompanied by Tsuharai Kokonoe oyakata (former yokozuna Chiyonofuji with 31 yushos, the second most, and Tachimochi Kitanoumi (former yokozuna Kitanoumi with 24 yushos, the third most). The oyakata has celebrated his sixtieth birthday on May 29. Yokozuna Taiho won 32 yushos during his career, the most in sumo history. He became the sixth rikishi to perform the ceremony since Wakanohana (the first) in 1988. Wearing his favorite kesho-mawashi with embroidered "Shin-Gi-Tai" characters (specially used for this occasion but normally exhibited at the Sumo Museum) and the specially made red yokozuna mawashi for the ceremony, he posed his "Unryu" style dohyo-iri in front of his Supporters Club members, Kyokai officials and his family members including his son-in-law, Takatoriki. Though the oyakata still weighs 127 kg, he has not been able to do "shiko" nor display the full dohyo-iri since he had a stroke 23 years ago as he still suffers from the aftereffects. "It's been 29 years since I put on the yokozuna mawashi. I felt deeply grateful. I was really moved by the experience. I forgot about the illness and my body. I really wanted to continue performing the dohyo-ri," said Taiho oyakata.

Jonosuke 28 Posted April 10, 2007 Kitanofuji did his at Hotel New Otani, one of the major hotels in Tokyo, five years ago this month. They specially built the dohyo in the hotel. He was accompanied by two yokozuna he developed, Hokutoumi and Chiyonofuji. He was already out of the Kyokai by this time.

(Laughing...) oops.. Edit- The whole point was that non-Kyokai guys DON'T do it at the Kkan.. So if it's Kitanofuji, Kitanofuji not at the Kkan is right. So it's not that big an oops after all. Absolved partially. Edited April 10, 2007 by Kintamayama
ilovesumo 12 Posted April 10, 2007 One of those things I don't like about the sumo world- why not giving it to him? Cause there are others, bigger ones, who have to get more, so what more could they get then having it in the Kokugikan? Kinda discriminating, but that is how the whole sumo world works, isn't it? (Laughing...) and (Laughing...) . What about the "we want to be onaji-mentality"? How can it be so different? But I bow all the time under the Mienoumi-Yusho portrait at the Ryogoku JR station, so one hour ago when I went home. Yesterday I just asked myself- isn't a station a bad place to have such a great picture hanging? Hmm...
