Asojima 2,874 Posted March 25, 2007 The first henka sucked. The second one was beautiful. And this is from an Asa supporter.
Araiwa 0 Posted March 25, 2007 For my personal taste it was the worst outcome I could possibly imagine. Especially considering the wonderful bouts that Asashoryu and Hakuho would have been capable to perform for the fans.
Fay 1,677 Posted March 25, 2007 (edited) I do not care at all. If Asa and Hakuho think they should do a henka, it's up to them. Senshuraku isn't made only of the last three bouts of the day. I'm glad a lot of rikishi did extremely well and could finish with a KK, I was happy to see Kakuryu showing a nice throw and having a 9-6, Kotoshogiku finally getting a 7-8, Satoyama winning the Juryu yusho - although I would have been glad too to see Goeido winning, Kaio getting his KK once more ... not bad at all for a Sunday morning. Besides I was glad to see the lifestream this time already during Makushita and sometimes even Sandanme when I could arrange it with my work. And because of a special event nothing could ruin my day anyway (Laughing...). Edited March 25, 2007 by Fay

aderechelsea 125 Posted March 26, 2007 a good (but not great) finish to a superb basho. The result of the yusho race satisfied me and in the end i think that if Asashoryu won the yusho with a henka on senshuraku, the "talk" around here would be more inflamatory, so ... it was good for the fans too ... ;-)
Jakusotsu 5,970 Posted March 26, 2007 Personally, I couldn't care much less about henka schmenka. But Nishi's story makes me sad. Quite embarassing situation You got in there, pal.
Zentoryu 154 Posted March 26, 2007 I can't imagine a finish worse than this. To build up the fan's anticipation with a kettei-sen between two of the top wrestlers in all of Sumo, and then have it end like that... what a let down. Nishi, I feel for you. That had to have been a really uncomfortable moment to go through. (Sign of approval...) Not exactly the most ideal introduction of your favorite sport to potential new fans. sildan 0 Posted March 27, 2007 I like that Asashoryu got what was coming for that dastardly henka to put Chiyotaikai in kadoban, but I don't like that Hakuho was the one to do it. I would have preferred Hakuho taking the yusho with a good fight. So... mediocre.
Jejima 1,385 Posted March 27, 2007 I think Nishinoshima's story sums it up nicely. The ending on senshuraku will not bring in new fans to the sport. It may even turn-off others to the sport. The kettei-zen match between these two rikishi should have been the highlight of the basho..... I cannot help thinking back to that kettei-sen match when walking wounded Takanohana (who may have been excused if he had done a henka) beat Musashimaru. That was the highlight of that particular basho. If it had been the kettei-sen that Nishi-zeki had been able to show the visiting actors' troop, he may have created a new sumo fan or two... Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted March 27, 2007 In the "Will Hakuho Crumble" topic, Olenishiki said Like other art forms through the last century and this, sumo has passed into postmodernism. Yaocho, both real and imagined. Henka. It's sumo ironically commenting on itself. Those of us who love music and literature and visual arts as well as sumo have seen all this before. Is this whole affair another indicator (along with the most recent yaocho scandal) that sumo is rotten to the core? Traditional values fading? Money and stardom corrupting? Stables beholden to koenkai? What does it all mean, Basil?
Yangnomazuma 79 Posted March 27, 2007 I was pretty much shocked at the first henka. Not that I have strong feelings one way or another about henka, but that Asashoryu felt he needed to do it or even that he considered doing it against a foe he should never lose to. It was a large case of disbelief and asking myself if I just saw what I thought I saw. The second henka was indeed poetic justice. I was telling Nabi that it would be cool to see Hakuho pull a henka just as the match begun and abruptly ended. The look on Asashoryu's face was quite priceless after he fully recognized how he lost. His half smile showed me he fully understood the poetic rhyme of it all and it was kind of like, "Yeah...you got me, and I deserved it. Good on you...". My concern is, after a wonderful basho of good sumo (if a little cautious for some of you...), Hakuho pulled this out of his bag of tricks. What will be remembered during any YDC deliberation later will not be days 1-13, but his quick and easy loss on day 14 and his trickery on day 15. It might cost him.... Jakusotsu 5,970 Posted March 27, 2007 Hands up who remembers which other yusho was decided by an even more beautiful Hakuho henka!
aderechelsea 125 Posted March 27, 2007 it's like "mushroom dreams" ... you cannot clearly remember what was true and what was fiction .... weird basho that one. a Hokutoriki Yusho would have been the biggest upset in the history of Sumo.

Asashosakari 19,344 Posted March 27, 2007 Me because I was shouting at the tv for him to do it against a runaway Hokutoriki because I wanted to see a playoff and felt the only way Hakuho could beat him was by jumping aside. Not watching with non-fans that day, I take it?
