Day 12 results and day 13 pairings

There were no changes at the top of the makuuchi leaderboard today as Hakuho, Asashoryu and Tochiozan beat Kotomitsuki, Kaio and Homasho. With 10-2 Tochiozan already is sure to get a sansho in his makuuchi debut and still getting some sort of shin-makuuchi bonus as he is getting a mid-maegashira rikishi as next opponent. Admittedly the chance isn't big anyway that Hakuho or Asashoryu will let him walk away with the yusho.

Tamanoshima beat Wakanosato while Kokkai got the better of ozeki Kotooshu to stay within two wins of the lead. Tochiazuma is the third sekitori to go kyujo after Baruto and Miyabiyama as his knee injury was getting worse as the basho went on.

Ama and Tokitenku continue their strong basho with wins and it looks possible that both komusubi will be kachi-koshi in the end. Kotoshogiku got his third straight win, but it isn't likely that he can stay in the sanyaku ranks. It isn't easy to see a strong replacement from the maegashira ranks as most candidates lost today with Kisenosato, Toyonoshima, Takekaze and Homasho. Kokkai won and is 9-3 now, an 11-4 from M6e could be good enough if the others fail.

Otsukasa beat the second juryo yusho leader in two days to advance to 8-4 and secure a repromotion to makuuchi. I think we can call him a dai-nyumaku now as this will be his 10th makuuchi promotion. Satoyama won against Tosanoumi in makuuchi to pull even with Goeido.

Ryuo, Tochisakae and Koryu won to join Otsukasa at two wins behind the two leaders. Since Satoyama and Goeido haven't met this basho yet, their yusho chance is quite small.

Takamifuji and Daimanazuru won today and together with Tamarikido they are 5-7, needing at least a 7-8 to stay in juryo. All those rikishi are matched up with hot promotion candidates from makushita tomorrow. Shirononami made a big step to stay with a win against Asofuji to improve to 7-5.

(Weeping...) That tag will stick. (Clapping wildly...)

The biggest test for Goeido tomorrow. Hokutoriki's style was poison to him before, now lets see if he can reach for that mawashi as well as he has been doing in previous bouts this basho.

I found the end of the Ama - Toyonoshima bout particularily interesting. Ama almost put his hand down, right at the edge of the Dohyo, but somehow managed to swing Toyonoshima around by the mawashi. Not the best sumo I've seen, but it does reflect Ama's usual determination, probably his quality I appreciate most.

On another note... Kotomitsuki at 8 wins... with only one Ozeki left ahead. Should we be expecting his usual 8-7, or something more thrilling ? No double-digit wins since Natsu 2005 - I say it's about time.

the bold part is what he has faced before. (Sign of approval...)

Kaikitsune must have meant the he is not doing that well against tsuppari-oshi attacks like Hokutoriki's

I am grateful and grapeful for the recurring events of aderechelsea, Asashosakari, Doitsuyama or others explaining what I meant when someone brings on questionmarks to my comments sometimes (Nodding yes...) Very funny actually and yes adere is right, Hokutoriki's style as an apeman pusher was the thing that used to be poison to Goeido. Hokutoriki himself isn't that relevant. Didn't see the bout but I guess Hokutoriki's style was bad for genki ippai Goeido this time too...

Let's just say that Goeido had no chance whatsoever, it was an easy pushout for someone like Hokutoriki.

Hoku gave Goeido an serious death stare at the edge of the tawara after he had ejected him, he wasnt happy about something.

Probably just got annoyed by Goeido's staring and arrogance. Goeido stares at his foes with attitude so when Hokutoriki evidently beat him 100-0, Hoku must have showed some disdain like "all that staring and weak pathetic sumo you punk, go get some power!"

It must be pretty tough to be Kyokutenho this basho.

First he lost his favorite tsukebito in Kyokutenzan, now reduced to doing Chanko duty back at the heya. At least Tenzan got Kachikoshi so he should be back to Makushita next basho.

But as for Tenho, he just about lost left and right, front and back this basho. The only two wins came from tachiai henka.

Perhaps he could get a tip or two from his fellow heyamate Kyokushuzan on the art of pulling and twisting to obviliion.

Today he had a great match-moved forward like lightning and obliterated Asasekiryuu. Let's not write him off just yet..

To be honest I'll be glad not to have to see "Asashoryu - Kyokutenho" on the torikumi. Probably the most predictable bout anywhere in sumo.

I would be inclined to agree, if my very first time in the kokugikan wasn't day 11 of Natsu 2004. (Showing respect...)

After trashing him so bad, I decided to give him a benefit of doubt.

I heard from a reliable source that he has not been able to step hard because of his right foot injury (the one he has been taping it up).

So let's see if he can bounce back next basho as he should go down quite a bit on banzuke so at that level he should be more successful provided he recovers from the injury.

But his sumo has been alarmingly deteriorating for a while now.
