Doitsuyama 1,173 Posted March 17, 2007 Tochiazuma had an easy win over Kisenosato to stay undefeated. Hakuho and Kotomitsuki keep their position at one loss, but all maegashira now have at least two losses as Kakuryu lost to Shimotori. Asashoryu stays at two losses while the two ozeki Kotooshu and Chiyotaikai got their third loss today. Goeido is the sole juryo leader now as Satoyama lost to the title defender Toyohibiki. Ryuo stays at one loss and on course for a makuuchi debut with a win over Katayama, but Otsukasa fell behind with another loss, this time in makuuchi against Tochinohana. The two bottom juryo rikishi Hokutoiwa and Oga had another loss today and both will find it difficult to stay in the sekitori ranks next basho. Other rikishi in danger are Daimanazuru and Takamifuji. -- Doitsuyama Day 7 Juryo Ms1e Mokonami (2-2) hikiotoshi J14e Hokutoiwa (1-6) J11e Koryu (5-2) oshitaoshi J14w Oga (2-5) J12w Tamarikido (4-3) yorikiri J10w Hakuba (4-3) J9e Kobo (2-5) tsukiotoshi J13e Takamifuji (3-4) J13w Shirononami (5-2) oshidashi J8e Shunketsu (4-3) J7w Ryuho (3-4) yorikiri J12e Daimanazuru (2-5) J7e Asofuji (3-4) hatakikomi J11w Kyokunankai (3-4) J6e Tochisakae (4-3) hikiotoshi J10e Bushuyama (4-3) J9w Goeido (7-0) okuridashi J5e Toyozakura (2-5) J8w Toyohibiki (3-4) oshidashi J4e Satoyama (6-1) J5w Kitazakura (4-3) yoritaoshi J3w Masatsukasa (2-5) J3e Ryuo (6-1) hikiotoshi J6w Katayama (2-5) J2e Kaiho (4-3) oshidashi J2w Takanowaka (1-6) J4w Hokutoriki (4-3) oshidashi J1w Hochiyama (2-5) Makuuchi M15w Tochinohana (3-4) hatakikomi J1e Otsukasa (5-2) M14e Tochiozan (5-2) yoritaoshi M16w Jumonji (3-4) M16e Wakanosato (5-2) yorikiri M13e Hakurozan (2-5) M15e Shimotori (5-2) yorikiri M11w Kakuryu (5-2) M11e Iwakiyama (3-4) hatakikomi M14w Tosanoumi (3-4) M8w Tamanoshima (5-2) oshidashi M12e Ushiomaru (3-4) M12w Yoshikaze (2-5) hatakikomi M8e Dejima (4-3) M7w Roho (3-4) uwatenage M10w Tokitsuumi (2-5) M7e Kokkai (5-2) hatakikomi M9w Tochinonada (3-4) M6w Kakizoe (4-3) tsukiotoshi M10e Kasuganishiki (0-7) M9e Aminishiki (4-3) sotogake M6e Takamisakari (4-3) M4w Takekaze (4-3) hikiotoshi M5w Tamakasuga (1-6) M5e Homasho (5-2) yorikiri M4e Futeno (1-6) M3e Miyabiyama (4-3) yorikiri M2e Kyokutenho (1-6) K1e Ama (3-4) yorikiri S1w Kotoshogiku (1-6) S1e Kotomitsuki (6-1) hatakikomi O1e Chiyotaikai (4-3) O3w Tochiazuma (7-0) oshidashi M1e Kisenosato (4-3) O2w Kaio (3-4) yorikiri M2w Asasekiryu (1-6) K1w Tokitenku (3-4) shitatenage O2e Kotooshu (4-3) O1w Hakuho (6-1) yorikiri M1w Toyonoshima (4-3) Y1e Asashoryu (5-2) sukuinage M3w Kasugao (3-4) Day 8 Juryo J12e Daimanazuru (2-5) Ms4e Ichihara (3-1) J11e Koryu (5-2) J13e Takamifuji (3-4) J14e Hokutoiwa (1-6) J10w Hakuba (4-3) J9e Kobo (2-5) J14w Oga (2-5) J13w Shirononami (5-2) J9w Goeido (7-0) J8e Shunketsu (4-3) J12w Tamarikido (4-3) J11w Kyokunankai (3-4) J8w Toyohibiki (3-4) J7e Asofuji (3-4) J10e Bushuyama (4-3) J5e Toyozakura (2-5) J6w Katayama (2-5) J7w Ryuho (3-4) J5w Kitazakura (4-3) J2e Kaiho (4-3) J6e Tochisakae (4-3) J4e Satoyama (6-1) J2w Takanowaka (1-6) J1e Otsukasa (5-2) J4w Hokutoriki (4-3) J3e Ryuo (6-1) J1w Hochiyama (2-5) Makuuchi J3w Masatsukasa (2-5) M15w Tochinohana (3-4) M13e Hakurozan (2-5) M15e Shimotori (5-2) M12e Ushiomaru (3-4) M16w Jumonji (3-4) M14e Tochiozan (5-2) M11w Kakuryu (5-2) M16e Wakanosato (5-2) M10w Tokitsuumi (2-5) M9e Aminishiki (4-3) M14w Tosanoumi (3-4) M12w Yoshikaze (2-5) M8w Tamanoshima (5-2) M7e Kokkai (5-2) M11e Iwakiyama (3-4) M10e Kasuganishiki (0-7) M7w Roho (3-4) M6e Takamisakari (4-3) M9w Tochinonada (3-4) M5e Homasho (5-2) M8e Dejima (4-3) M6w Kakizoe (4-3) M5w Tamakasuga (1-6) M4e Futeno (1-6) M2w Asasekiryu (1-6) M4w Takekaze (4-3) M1w Toyonoshima (4-3) S1e Kotomitsuki (6-1) K1e Ama (3-4) K1w Tokitenku (3-4) S1w Kotoshogiku (1-6) M3w Kasugao (3-4) O1w Hakuho (6-1) O1e Chiyotaikai (4-3) M2e Kyokutenho (1-6) M3e Miyabiyama (4-3) O2w Kaio (3-4) O2e Kotooshu (4-3) O3w Tochiazuma (7-0) Y1e Asashoryu (5-2) M1e Kisenosato (4-3)
aderechelsea 124 Posted March 17, 2007 did anyone notice that during the Kisenosato-Tochiazuma bout someone yelled "FUTENO !!!!!" ?? must have had a few drinks over his limit (Shaking head...) . . . didn't catch much of the action today (as most of you it appears) but the Toyo-Hakuho bout compensated me for everything. It was a blast. Tokitenku also fought well today and got another high ranker beaten. Looked like a nimaigeri attempt by him and the kimarite-announcer must have watched the replay a few times before he announced the shitatenage. tomorrow its all about Tochiazuma-Kotooshu and Asa-Kise. And we'll probably see more of those puny tsuppari attacks from Hakuho ;-)

He should win to have a chance to be promoted for the next basho. well .... i f he cannot beat Daimanazuru he might as well stay in Makushita for one more basho. Daimanazuru is one of the easiest opponents in Juryo if you are over 135 kg and cannot just be overstepped by the mere mass advantage he has. easy win for Ichihara or another basho in Makushita to teach him how to beat guys like Zuru. Win-win situation if you ask me. Edited March 17, 2007 by aderechelsea

aderechelsea 124 Posted March 17, 2007 in the past year he is holding his ground with a few 8-7 records but also a couple of disastrous performances (one of those was a 4-11 from juryo 8). And he is 190cm/170kg .........

I particularly liked the stretch from 2005.01 to 2005.11: Started out at J14w, had a 45-45 record in those six basho, and finished at J4e. :-) At any rate, he's the new Wakakosho, except for the lack of any double-digit win basho. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted March 17, 2007 By the way the kimarite announcing gyoji doesn't have a tv. He calls the kimarite after checking with another (gyoji?) sitting beside him. That reminds me of a question that's been bugging me for a while...is the "kimarite gyoji" the public address announcer himself, or does the kimarite gyoji simply relay his kimarite decision to the PA guy? aderechelsea 124 Posted March 17, 2007 Tokitenku also fought well today and got another high ranker beaten. Looked like a nimaigeri attempt by him and the kimarite-announcer must have watched the replay a few times before he announced the shitatenage. Commentators discussed that today. Tenku used his foot. They also discussed the one you got so annoyed about a few days ago the next day and agreed with you in both cases. By the way the kimarite announcing gyoji doesn't have a tv. aderechelsea 124 Posted March 17, 2007 i think the anouncer has a small monitor in front of him . Guest commentators do but not the gyoji. Although now that you dispute it I'm only 99% sure I'm right. please check it out next time you go to the kokugikan. I am almost certain myself that he has a small b/w screen in front of him. aderechelsea 124 Posted March 17, 2007 (edited) my thoughts after watching the bouts at info-sumo.net J2e Kaiho (4-3) oshidashi J2w Takanowaka (1-6) Nice henka :-) from my boy. Ok .. it was not great but at least he could follow up with a nice oshi attack. Takanowaka is pretty helpless though ... The win is the only thing to keep from a bout like this. J4w Hokutoriki (4-3) oshidashi J1w Hochiyama (2-5) Another Hakkaku win, which is always good, but if that wasn't a matta at the start then i don't know what ... Hochiyama did save himself for a moment but he didn't have much to offer after that. He is mysteriously bad this basho. M16e Wakanosato (5-2) yorikiri M13e Hakurozan (2-5) First day of the basho that Wakanosato looked genki. He got his right inside fast and then changed his left from outside to a usefull morozashi (no actual mawashi grip though) and moved forward in lively fashion. Should i raise my hopes again for him gettin double digits? probably yes ... M12w Yoshikaze (2-5) hatakikomi M8e Dejima (4-3) Yoshikaze was lucky today that his swift legs saved him on the tawara. Things don't look too bright for him though. M7w Roho (3-4) uwatenage M10w Tokitsuumi (2-5) Roho decided to join us in Osaka. Powerfull uwatenage ... M9e Aminishiki (4-3) sotogake M6e Takamisakari (4-3) best bout of the day !!!! Aminishiki changed his grip a lot of times to find an opening, but Sakari defended like a rock. Robo has the bad habit of lifting his head too high and he doesn't use it to push his aite. Today he paid that because Aminishiki pushed him under the chin with the head but kept his eyes on the legs, giving him the chance to pull the sotogake at exactly the perfect time. M5e Homasho (5-2) yorikiri M4e Futeno (1-6) 2nd best bout of the day. Homasho is a master of defense. He didn't let Futeno put the right hand on the mawashi with nice subtle moves of the hip, and then "dived" inside to get the double grip and move forward. Futeno stood his ground for a while but Homer showed he has stamina and pushed with persistence. Superb show of Sumo. i bow to Homasho's ability. M3e Miyabiyama (4-3) yorikiri M2e Kyokutenho (1-6) I don't believe Tenho lost to Miya ina yotsu fight. K1e Ama (3-4) yorikiri S1w Kotoshogiku (1-6) slam !!!! .... slap !!!! slap !!!!! slap !!!! nodowa ... slap !!!! slap !!!! slap !!!! pull .... slap !!!! ... morozashi !!!! ... forward !! forward !!! ... YORIKIRI !!!!! AMA no KACHIIIIII !!!!!! sumo fans rejoice K1w Tokitenku (3-4) shitatenage O2e Kotooshu (4-3) Now that i've seen the bout again i am sure it was a nimaigeri. What the hell were they thinking when they called that one a "shitatenage" ? O1w Hakuho (6-1) yorikiri M1w Toyonoshima (4-3) in the replay it didn't look that good. Hakuho was like a cat playing with a mouse. He should really crank it up a notch if he wants to challenge for the yusho. Sashohitowa 6 Posted March 17, 2007 I really believe now that what Kotooshu does is a shame.Basho after basho, he is bringing disgrace on himself and his rank. Why is he a disgrace to his rank? He is the only active Ozeki who has never been kadoban. Because he is never in the yusho race either (since he became Ozeki). Because he simply shouldn't drop out of the yusho race after day 3 or something... Because he is the Ozeki that easiest gives away wins to lower ranked opponents. Recently here on the forum was discussion how many "first meetings" in a row Asashoryu has won. And I am sure that if there is another topics - "Who is the Ozeki that the maegashora-joi beat the most?" or "Who is that against the newly promoted joi-jin got their first win over Ozeki?" - I am pretty sure that "Kotooshu" is the answer that first comes in our heads, isn't it?.... Because recently has become a symbol of mediocrity. And that's why he is the least commented sanyaku here in the forum recently (my impression) - just has nothing to discuss about... Every time before basho there are words of aiming for yushu, but when this doesn't happen - well, no one is really surprised.... All above is my personal opinion.. And I just would like to avail myself of my human right to be pissed off...
aderechelsea 124 Posted March 17, 2007 maybe they bought a new monitor since last year? Photo is from the 2004 Aki basho. it must have been broken in Natsu last year, and they got a B/W one just for that basho ... :-)

Well, you are right about one thing-Tochiazuma , KaioU and Chiyotaikai are mentioned a lot more than Osh, but usually in a context of "xth kadoban basho", or X injured again" etc. I'm too lazy , but if you compare the wins of all Ozeki in the last 7 bashos, using "0" for a missed basho, you may be surprised by the results.. Ok, I'm not too lazy.. Since Hatsu 2006; KaioU - 48 Chiyotaikai - 61 Hakuhou - 71 Tochiazuma - 60 Osh - 64 I'd say he has a good spot in the middle.. OTOH, it could be argued he was the ONLY Ozeki to participate in the full 105 days of the 7 bashos..
Asashosakari 18,959 Posted March 17, 2007 (edited) Since Hatsu 2006;KaioU - 48 Chiyotaikai - 61 Hakuhou - 71 Tochiazuma - 60 Osh - 64 Sasho-san has a point about Osh giving away ginboshi left and right though (from 2006.01 to Day 7, for Hakuho from 2006.05, fusensho/pai excluded): Hakuho 28-4 (.875) Chiyotaikai 39-10 (.796) Tochiazuma 35-14 (.714) Kotooshu 40-21 (.656) Kaio 28-18 (.609) And that includes his first two Ozeki basho where he was 15-3 against Maegashira. Excluding those, he drops to just 25-18 (.581) on his last five and a half tournaments - that's Sekiwake territory at best.
