Takanohana-beya is quite dead isn't it? Is there really any vigour at keiko for example? No future for most rikishi there, oyakata doesn't seem too competent and somehow it can't really be a tempting destination for a new recruit. If Takanohana indeed spends a lot of time in variety shows and in cults, then it sure doesn't give an impression he really believes in his own heya at the moment. He lacks teraoism. Maybe he is also too odd and potential recruits are afraid of his cults, diets and reverse aging process. Then again I believe it is the rikishi who build the atmosphere at the heya. Sakaigawa seems to be a good example of a very dynamic heya with rikishi building it to be one of the most intense keiko places on earth and it must be a popular heya for new recruits too.

But there are other oyakata, one of them is Takanonami. Is he also not able to teach?

I think none of the Makushita gaijin will be promoted, and maybe two of the Juryo guys will be demoted.

Well that's certainly pessimistic...5-10 or worse for both Koryu and Hakuba, make-koshi for Wakanoho and Mokonami, and 4-3 or worse for Musashiryu?

Yes. I shall explain my view. Hakuba is not especially good. He is good for upper-Makushita. The fact he got a KK last basho in his first Juryo basho is because he rode the adrenaline wave. That wave's ship has sailed, as someone on this forum likes to say.. I feel he will collapse. Same exactly goes for Kouryuu. This isn't to say they won't make it eventually, but I think they are not ready at this juncture. Wakanoho can get a 4-3 and still remain in Makushita, although if the two aforementioned drop, that would be a near-miracle.. I'd go with a 3-4 "I just lost all my toys" shock. He'll be back and reach Ozeki at least. Moukonami AFAIK has not shaken off his injury yet. Musashiryuu is the highest he ever was and that fact alone can cause massive panic.

I've made 5 predictions- let's see how many come true.

OTOH, this whole theory may have sprung out of my mind a second ago, and my original post may have had a subtle subtext..

OTOOH, I'm almost always totally wrong with my predictions, even the obvious ones.

That's the same thing I was thinking about Ryuo a few basho ago. OTOH, I'm a big believer in the idea that the second basho in a new division is a more meaningful indicator than the first one, for the reasons you've outlined, so I understand what you're getting at.

FWIW, I'm tempted to agree with you about Hakuba. I think Koryu's plodding, methodical sumo can survive pretty well though...most of the division is still made up of washed-up oldtimers with various physical ailments, and if you can simply outlast them on the dohyo, you're halfway to success already.
