Aloha from hawaii everyone! i just would like to introduce myself! my name is Ron-Shane Tai King Kalani Kim. i'm a 5foot 11inch tall(..not very tall..) 490lbs. 22 year old with Hawaiian,Chinese,Maori,Korean and Portuguese nationalities and i'm wondering what would i expect after joining sumo ...and how can i join? Over the years a lot of my family and friends have told me to become a sumo wrestler because of my size! but just never thought about it seriously until now! i've looked up some info on google and while doing so came across this forum! i just thought i make a thread and see what kind of information and answers i could get from here! so please fell free to leave me a pm or just some reply messages! if you want you could also e-mail me at rskim808@yahoo.com.

Once again thank you for all that will reply!

Do you mean professional or amateur sumo?

If professional, you may have left it too late, as there is an age cut-off for joining Ozumo...

If amateur, there are others who can answer you better from this forum.

And welcome!!! (I am not worthy...)

Yes, new sumotori need to join professional sumo (Ozumo) before their 23rd birthday, so you'd have until next year's January tournament (I'm assuming the birthday in your member profile is correct). The bigger hold-up is probably that there's a limit on non-Japanese recruits that is almost maxed out at the moment so, unfortunately, it's not like you could just go and join. Do you have some kind of sports background that might make you an interesting prospect to recruit?

Otherwise, there's always participating in amateur sumo as the more easily attainable alternative.

Either way, whichever sumo you want to do look up wayne vierra, and contact him...you can at least start practice with him if youre on the same island.

i live on oahu and i know that chad rowand (don't know if that's spelled correctly) a.k.a. akebono had a school down here in waimanalo. i don't know if he still has it though.

not really much experience in sports...

so amateur is the only option then.

Yes, welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure if Chad has anything in Waimanalo any more. I looked when I was there in January. But maybe you can speak to Fia, i.e., Musashimaru, when he comes over for the tour in June.
