Jonosuke 28 Posted December 10, 2006 (edited) Gacktoh san is bringing something intriguing to us here on the SumoForum. Japanese bloggers often exchange something called "Baton". Basically one person starts out with a set of questions and his/her answer to them. Another person will take over and then another person and so on. It's like your introduction to your circle as others will know what you are like. I think if it'not overdone, it can be a lot of fun. The "baton" comes from the relay race baton as we exchange it to the next person, sort of handing over the torch to him/her. So those who are Japanese challenged, here are her first set of "Sumo Baton" questions and my answers to them: 1. Who is your favorite active rikishi? My answer: Homasho 2. Who is your all time favorite rikishi (including currently active rikishis)? A: Ozeki Takanohana 3. What is your most memorable bout and/or most memorable technique by who? A. Kyokudozan vs Kushimaumi Light weight Kyokudozan (perhaps weighing less than 110 kg at the time) going against heavy set college pheenom Kushimaumi who was on the way to Sanyaku this basho. Kyokudozan sprinted out of tachiai and unleashed a devastating harite that knocked Kushimaumi cold. Kushimaumi ended up going on makekoshi this basho and never displayed any of the promises he had shown during his Nichi-dai days. It was a harite that almost drove Kushimaumi to retirement, a career changing bout. 4. Who is your "local" rikishi? A. I guess for most of us this could be none but you can always adopt one. Since I am originally from Tokyo and there is a sumo beya located only a couple of minutes walk from the elementary school I went, I consider all of Shibatayama beya rikishis to be my own local rikishis. 5. What was it that made you start watching sumo? My grandfather loved sumo and I remember he was always sitting in front of TV watching sumo. 6. Approximately how many times have you watched the basho live? A. Two dozens...I think. 7. If decided to become a rikishi, what will be the shikona (does not need to be a real shikona)? A. Hmmm...I think I will take Hamadayama. There is Hamadayama station on Inokashira line in Tokyo and I have some fond memory around there. 8. Which anime, game or fictional sumo character comes to your mind right away? A. Sorry, none. 9. Favorite sumo analyst or commentator? A. Kitajin oyakata (former sekiwake Kirinji) 10. Now what are you going to do with this "baton"? A. I post it on SumoForum. And another series: 1. The most memorable bout of 2006? A. The one Hakuho beat Asashoryu by putting his body over Asashoryu and both falling off the dohyo together. It kind of reminded me of a scene from film where a man is kissing a woman and they fall together on bed. 2. What do you look forward from the 2007 Ozumo? A. A new yokozuna and healthier ozekis. 3. How do you normally watch sumo? A. Taping TV Japan broadcast and watch it while jogging/walking/vegitating on treadmill. 4. Talk about mawashi? A. I am sure they are glad that they don't compete in Canada during winter... 5. Any particular rikishi's habit/conduct/behaviour/body language that you especially take notice of A. Tamanoshima hitting his pec with his right hand just prior to his bout. I never thought of it anything initially but I am now finding myself doing it all the time. 6. What are you going to do with this baton? A. I will be asking who will be doing it next???? Edited December 10, 2006 by Jonosuke

(just seeing the fear in Aderechelseas face before that bout that he would come all the way to Japan, miss Asashoryu and see a Miyabiyama yusho was priceless) Actually I wasn't speaking generally. (Nodding yes...) kaiguma 0 Posted December 11, 2006 (edited) Kainootou here. I never did put an intro in the New Member's Sub, so maybe this can stand in its place. 1. Who is your favorite active rikishi? A: Ama 2. Who is your all time favorite rikishi (including currently active rikishis)? A: Yokozuna Chiyonofuji 3. What is your most memorable bout and/or most memorable technique by who? A. Bout: Aminishiki v Tochiazuma, Aki 2005 day 13 [Might seem strange, but see#5 for context] Technique: Tochiazuma's Ottsuke: persistant, deliberate, subtle magic. 4. Who is your "local" rikishi? A. Little Kaiguma is gearing up for his Makushita Tsukedashi 5 debut in Hatsu 2026! [while the avatar lasts, please note his extreme likeness to Ozeki Tochiazuma] Brooklyn Represent. 5. What was it that made you start watching sumo? I was in Japan for the first time with my wife and son in September of 2005. I caught sumo digest a few times from the inn or hotel rooms while in Tokyo, not really aware how close I was to the KKan at times. I was fascinated, especially as I began to see the techniques unfolding via replay. At the end of the basho we were in Osaka on day 13, and I happened to catch Aminishiki v. Tochiazuma and Kotooshu v Asashoryu "live" on the Big-Man in _________ Station? The prior was the first bout I can remember with clarity, especially the final moment at the edge where Aminishiki stiffens for the last-ditch attempt at maybe Utchari, but to no avail, and Tochiazuma is gamely launched off of the dohyo. 6. Approximately how many times have you watched the basho live? A. Sadly, never yet. :-) 7. If decided to become a rikishi, what will be the shikona (does not need to be a real shikona)? 8. Which anime, game or fictional sumo character comes to your mind right away? A. Thanks to Otokonoyama, it's Fat Bastard. 9. Favorite sumo analyst or commentator? A. Tochiazuma over Asashoryu by Uwatedashinage, Hatsu 2006, Senshuraku, for the yusho. 2. What do you look forward from the 2007 Ozumo? A. Sekiwake Ama, Maegashira Tochiouzan Hochiyama Kakuryu et. al., Sanyakau debut for Homasho, and someone besides Asashoryu winning the yusho at least once. 3. How do you normally watch sumo? A. Stream if I can stay up. Otherwise I rely on the dwindling resource of selfless fans in the sharing market. 4. Talk about mawashi? A. Only in private... 5. Any particular rikishi's habit/conduct/behaviour/body language that you especially take notice of A. Kisenosato . . . shakin' that ass. 6. What are you going to do with this baton? A. Kaikitsune Makoto 189 Posted December 12,

Jonosuke 28 Posted December 13, 2006 Here's a stab at Gacktoh san's response on her blog on what her blog friends wrote about "our baton": Do you have any idea, from reading responses, where your readers live their lives? These are responses from my weblog's readers, and some of my friends gave me commnets by e-mail or PM. All of them are enjoying!! (Words between < and > are by Gacktoh san) 4. Talk about Mawashi > I prefer not to wear it (A blogger's response) "Hehe(laugh) In a way I feel that is describing the essence of sumo as a competition. If there is no mawashi at all, we can't talk about this or that technique, can we?...in other words, we can't even establish a pairing (laughs) Personally for myself, I happen to like Sokorai's mawashi position." >Kakuryu's Sanyaku promotion "If this ever happens, Izutsu oyakata may go on crying forever(laughs) Definitely worth watching for it ~~" >Spiderman (A blogger's response) "Maybe the images of Spiderman moving his limbs and the way Shiko is performed got merged together..." (A blogger's response) "The Kamakura culture is based on Samurai warrior society, rather rugged society. In my opinion, while the Kyoto culture though still steeped in Samurai culture is more refined Azuchi Momoyama culture (the age of Nobunaga Oda/Hideyoshi Toyotomi). From the time of Heian to Kamakura, Muromachi/Momoyama Edo, Kyoto was infused with more diverse cultural disciplines. Anyway, I feel this may be simply a matter of preference though." (A blogger's response) "Once again I realized that the Net is really an amazing thing. I find it curious that even with my lack of proper English skills, when the subject is on sumo, I somehow can understand the discussion." "Now I realize that they all really do know sumo but if they can excuse me for saying so, it would have been far more interesting to see a little more different view, a unique perspecitve based on their own culture. (I must admit their view all too closely resemble Japanese sumo fan's. But I mean this in a very sincere way). I wonder if one attains a certain level of expertise when we begin to understand the true essence, we may all reach the same destination regardless of our background? I am not sure how I can precisely put it but if we can find a new way of interpretation in which we can bridge our own locally grown ideas, then I feel it's worthwhile to endeavour to have sumo spread throughout the world. I have a feeling if people like them who are so knowledgible about sumo will start leading the way, then it could very well force their uniform elite opinion to the grassroots fans everywhere. I must apologize if I sounded too candid. But I'd like to commend Gacktoh san for sending out the baton to them. I find their view to be illuminating. Thank you very much. Please convey my best wishes to them."
