Banzuke Surfing Kyushu 2006 (1st Wave)

Recommended Posts

Also, I imagine that the variable of the "perfect player" can be more volatile than you'd like, giving less instead of more stability to the game.

FWIW, going back a year of hypothetical waves, things seem to be relatively stable, at least as far as the game length would be concerned. If anything, the actual first wave was an especially quick one.

Hatsu 2004 wave (14 basho):

Hatsu 2004:  Jk32e Keno 7-0 -> Jd26e
Haru 2004:   Jd41w Yoshimura 6-1 -> Sd76e
Natsu 2004:  Sd77e Takashoma 6-1 -> Sd21e
Nagoya 2004: Sd26w Asahimaru 6-1 -> Ms46w
Aki 2004:	Sd6e Onishi 7-0 -> Ms11w
Kyushu 2004: Ms54e Shiraishi 7-0 -> Ms6e
Hatsu 2005:  Ms9w Fukkoyama 5-2 -> Ms3w
Haru 2005:   Ms5e Sumanofuji 6-1 -> J12e
Natsu 2005:  J12w Harunoyama 8-7 -> J7e
Nagoya 2005: J8e Kasuganishiki 9-6 -> J2w
Aki 2005:	J3w Tochinohana 10-5 -> M14e
Kyushu 2005: M15e Kasuganishiki 9-6 -> M5w
Hatsu 2006:  M6e Ama 9-6 -> M2e
Haru 2006:   M5e Kyokutenho 11-4 -> Ke

Haru 2004 wave (13 basho) - this one catches up to the previous one:

Haru 2004:   Jk27w Onishi 7-0 -> Jd23e
Natsu 2004:  Jd28w Yoshinoshima 6-1 -> Sd64w
Nagoya 2004: Sd78e Chiyonohana 7-0 -> Ms50w
Aki 2004:	Sd6e Onishi 7-0 ...

Natsu 2004 wave (13 basho):

Natsu 2004:  Jk44w Sadanokuni 6-1 -> Jd83e
Nagoya 2004: Jd92e Shiraishi 7-0 -> Sd84w
Aki 2004:	Sd92w Orora 6-1 -> Sd34e
Kyushu 2004: Sd68w Yamamoto 7-0 -> Ms42e
Hatsu 2005:  Sd5e Nakanokuni 7-0 -> Ms11w
Haru 2005:   Ms14e Masutsuyoshi 5-2 -> Ms7e
Natsu 2005:  Ms9w Raiko 5-2 -> Ms2e
Nagoya 2005: Ms3w Masatsukasa 6-1 -> J11e

Hatsu 2006:  M14w Tokitsuumi 12-3 -> M5w
Haru 2006:   M7e Kisenosato 10-5 -> M1e
Natsu 2006:  M2e Asasekiryu 10-5 -> Ke

Nagoya 2004 wave (12 basho) - another one that catches up:

Nagoya 2004: Jk40e Baruto 7-0 -> Jd30e
Aki 2004:	Jd33w Yamamoto 6-1 -> Sd68w
Kyushu 2004: Sd80e Kagaya 7-0 -> Ms52e
Hatsu 2005:  Sd5e Nakanokuni 7-0 ...

Aki 2004 wave (12 basho) - this one almost catches the previous two, note the picks at Nagoya and Aki 2005:

Aki 2004:	Jk41e Mizuguchi 7-0 -> Jd30e
Kyushu 2004: Jd35w Asahanada 6-1 -> Sd71w

Natsu 2006:  M11w Baruto 11-4 -> M4w
Nagoya 2006: M5w Kokkai 10-5 -> Kw

Kyushu 2004 wave (12 basho) - this one is caught up by the actual first wave (11 basho) as posted by Randomitsuki:

Kyushu 2004: Jk33w Asahisakari 6-1 -> Jd65e
Hatsu 2005:  Jd93w Kainohama 7-0 -> Sd85e
Haru 2005:   Jd5e Fudoyama 7-0 -> Sd15w
Natsu 2005:  Sd26w Tatsuyutaka 6-1 -> Ms46w
Nagoya 2005: Sd4e Wakagiyama 6-1 ...

For kicks, here's the hypothetical Haru 2005 wave (10 basho so far) - this one has gotten stuck in high Makushita/low Juryo, completely unlike its preceding wave:

Haru 2005:   Jk31w Sawai 7-0 -> Jd25w

Natsu 2006:  Ms3w Kageyama 5-2 -> Ms1e
Nagoya 2006: Ms3w Sumanofuji 5-2 -> J14w
Aki 2006:	Ms6w Sawai 7-0 -> J11w

As it is, playing this game is much more difficult than I originally thought. Reaching sekitori ranks is extremely complicated as Oshirokita will probably attest to (he sticks in upper Makushita for a loong time now).

It is VERY difficult to get into Juryo and stay there. When I did get up into Juryo (my pick made it to J13w) I used my last joker to pick both Juryo rikishi below me (J14e & J14w) in the hopes of moving up and both of them got make koshi and forced me back in Makushita. As the Pick the Yusho Winners game will attest, it is not easy to pick the best rikishi in upper Makushita (or one with enough promotion power to get high into Juryo). Makushita rikishi who get promoted to Juryo usually fill the bottom spots in Juryo so it is something of a barrier to this game.

I do hope however that someone will be able to make it to sanyaku in Banzuke Surfing before the game is given another arbitrary finish line.

Standings after day 10:

Oshirokita is still in danger of being overtaken by Torideyama and Exil. They surf with Miyamoto (3-2) whereas Oshirokita's Daishoyama wave (2-3) doesn't move too well. After nakabi both rikishi were at 2-2, but now the difference is the same as before.

Meanwhile, the number of players surfing undefeated rikishi has dwindled to almost nothing. Only Profomisakari sports a 5-0 record in low Sandanme.

Final standings 1st Wave:

Wow, what a finish, what a turmoil. There have been more turnarounds since day 10 than I can ever remember. Many players moved from 2-3 after 10 days to a KK: Jakusotsu, Imumaru, Gusoyama, Holleshoryu, charliki, Mattjila, Frinkanohana, Andoreasu, and most notably, sashimaru.

Some poor souls went from 3-2 to MK: furanohana and Yubiquitoyama in Makushita, and Konosato in Jonokuchi.

Here are the final standings, sorted by estimated rank. Please take this with a huge grain of salt, your actual ranks can vary quite a lot (I never find the time to polish these estimates). It will be very close at the top. The only certain thing is that long-time leader Oshirokita will drop to fourth place. The top will be decided in a photo finish between sashimaru and Torideyama/Exil.

In Aki Basho, I picked W-Jonokuchi 26 Iwasa. He finished with 2-5.

In Kyushu Basho, he is again ranked at W-Jonokuchi 26, so I thought it would be fun to pick him again*.... and he is 2-5 again.

(I am not worthy...)

(* he was below the rank allowed for new entrants in Banzuke Surfing)

2nd time I pick Nakanishi, 2nd time he drags me down with a 2-5... (I am not worthy...)
If You were U2's Bono I would holler at You, "Then stop picking him for christ's sake!"

How do you know I'm not Bono?

Anyway this was a valid enough comment, but twice remains fairly inconclusive. I'll try to pick him once more in the future and if it's 2-5 again, I'll take it as a hint.

Final standings 1st Wave:

The top will be decided in a photo finish between sashimaru and Torideyama/Exil.

Rank Shikona Surfs Position	Standing Estimate
1.   sashimaru**			Maeta				  ms8w		4-3	   ms5w
2.   Torideyama*			Miyamoto			   ms11w	   5-2	   ms6e
3.   Exil				   Miyamoto			   ms11w	   5-2	   ms6e
4.   Oshirokita			 Daishoyama			 ms5w		3-4	   ms9w

And the photo shows that Torideyama / Exil with Miyamoto (ms5w) edge out sashimaru with Maeta (ms6e). The banzuke makers have been sent their favorite flask of sake in appreciation.
