Urakata who reach retirement age during honbasho continue to work as normal until it concludes. He will be the third Shonosuke in a row to do so, albeit only for one day. The 37th turned 65 on Day 9 of Haru 2015, the 36th on Day 5 of Natsu 2013.

Here is a video of the 36th Kimura Shonosuke refereeing his final bout at the Natsu Basho 2013, Day 15, between Hakuho and Harumafuji. The crowd cheers as he leaves the dohyo for the last time (at about the 7:00 minute mark in the video). Then he spots Hakuho and Kakuryu in the hallway holding large floral arrangements. The rest is as described in my previous post above. There was a large contingent of news media there as well. Jason, who uploaded this video, commented that the 36th Kimura Shonosuke began his career as gyoji in 1964!

I saw the announcement about the 36th Kimura Shonosuke tonight on TV Japan while watching the live broadcast of the basho. A photo of him was shown with a black border. He seemed like such a modest man. I remember when he refereed his final bout in 2013 and the crowd went wild as he left the dohyo for the last time. He looked very moved emotionally but also embarrassed. Then when he got to the dressing area in the back, Hakuho handed him a huge floral arrangement. He looked stunned. Then Kakuryu also handed him a beautiful bouquet and they (Hakuho and Kakuryu) both gestured that they wanted a photo taken of them together. He looked overwhelmed and very touched. So modest. And he had the respect of the rikishi on the dohyo because he was competent, fair and always made the right call. A shame he couldn't be cloned!

Shikimori Inosuke sexual harassment and drink talk..
Kuroyama replied to Kintamayama's topic in Ozumo Discussions
First columm - 木村庄之助 - Kimura Shonosuke Second column - 式守伊之助 - Shikimori Inosuke Third column - 木村玉之助 - Kimura Tamanosuke (tate-gyoji of Osaka sumo with rank retained after the merger) Fourth column - 備考 - Remarks. This generally shows when there's a promotion from one tate-gyoji position to another. So, for November, 2011 when it says 38代伊之助→36代庄之助 it's informing us that the 38th Shikimori Inosuke became the 36th Kimura Shonosuke. With the following exceptions: 1927 - the 3 tate-gyoji system is instituted due to the east-west merger. 1951 - return to the 2 tate-gyoji system with with the release of Tamanosuke. 1994 - For the first time in history both tate-gyoji ranks were vacant. Strangely, they're just listing the times during which each successive name holder was at that rank. They don't give their real names, or link to specific articles about them even when they exist. And I know at least a few exist, such as https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/式守伊之助_(19代) (the 19th Shikimori Inosuke, aka the one with the beard) because I had occasion to look him up once.- 150 replies

As forever as the top gyoji in ozumo has the name Kimura Shonosuke, the rikishi fighting the spirit for that particular hitori-zumo event will have the name Ichirikizan. If it gets very popular, they also may mention what generation of Ichirikizan it is, like the 36th Shonosuke forever remains that still after intai.

I wish I could go and see this - the Bizen Osafune Sword Museum in Setouchi, Okayama prefecture is currently holding an exhibition of Yokozuna tachi and other ozumo-related items for the first time in 11 years. Tsuna, dohyo-iri kesho-mawashi sets and tegata are also on display, along with a costume and gunbai from 36th Kimura Shonosuke. Osafune, one of the towns which was merged to create Setouchi in 2004, was famous for the production of swords in the distant past. The exhibition occupies two floors of the museum and runs in two parts. The first part started on January 27th and ends on February 26th. It closes for a display change on February 27th/28th, and then the second part runs from March 1st to 26th.

The 36th Kimura Shonosuke (who had never a day off) held a 30min gyoji lecture at an event in Tokyo, with the same title as his book: A rather good story of/by a gyoji. About how to become a gyoji, what Shinto ritual happens at the doyho matsuri and about the tasks of a gyoji. http://amamishimbun.co.jp/index.php?QBlog-20160925-2

Some more pictures from the 46th Japan Professional Sports Awards on December 27th. Rookie of the year award (Shinjin-sho, 新人賞) for sumo went to Endo. All of the Shinjin-sho winners, Endo on the left. Distinguished service award (Koro-sho, 功労賞) for sumo went to Kisenosato. With fellow Koro-sho winner Masahiro Tanaka, a pitcher for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles baseball team. All of the Koro-sho winners, Kisenosato on the left. Outstanding performance award (same as in sumo, Shukun-sho) for Hakuho, along with WBC Bantamweight boxing champion Shinsuke Yamanaka (centre). Maybe a team award for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles? I'm really not sure about that, but the guy on the left is a member of the club's board of directors. Hakuho also received an NHK award. Toshihiro Yamazaki (36th Kimura Shonosuke) receiving his distinguished service award from Education, Culture and Sports Minister Hakubun Shimomura. Endo in the green room afterwards. With fellow Shinjin-sho winner Takumi Minamino, a striker for the Cerezo Osaka soccer team. Kisenosato in the green room. With fellow Koro-sho winner Yota Sato, retired WBC Super Flyweight boxing champion. The former gyoji in the green room. Hakuho with Masahiro Tanaka, Shinsuke Yamanaka and the Golden Eagles director. Press conference, from left: jockey Yutaka Take; racing driver Takuma Sato; Hakuho; that director guy again; Masahiro Tanaka; and Shinsuke Yamanaka.

The retired 36th Shonosuke about his secret to never having missed a day in the 49 years as a gyoji (joking): "Not having collided with a rikishi (on the dohyo), maybe." - others have - dropped from the doyho - even been transported by ambulance. Gyoji like rikishi start as apprentice (minarai, 3 years - the rikishi in former times in the rules were called like that, too) and go through the ranks (also as minarai - yobidashi the same, tokoyama similar, but with their own type of ranks: 5 classes, starting only after the 3 years as minarai, and one special class.) Gyoji are not really promoted according to seniority, but according to the evaluation of their records, decided by the riji-kai. Did they have wrong calls, good or bad posture, etc., 6 items. Remarkably superior results may lead to special promotions. Best example is the 27th Shonosuke (born 1925, started 36.1, juryo 50.9, makuuchi 56.5, sanyaku 66.11): in 1974.1, jumping over 2 senior sanyaku gyoji he became the no. 2, Shikimori Inosuke (23rd). Shonosuke at 51 (77.11) is still the record for the youngest. Since the gyoji retirement system was in place he has the most basho as Shonosuke, 79, officiating 1185 bouts. Looking at the gyoji from below as shimpan is Fujishima-oyakata (Musoyama): "There are skilled gyoji still young but with quick and sharp movements, having only few wrong calls. It's not only according to age, I believe. They (the gyoji special regulations) should actively be applied." The goyji should feel a similar tension about their results as the rikshi in ozumo, with the banzuke called a harsh world: "One rank different is the same as a vassal, one division different is the same as a worm." (Sanspo)

The Kyokai has chipped in with a few pictures from the event. Shikihide-oyakata (former Kitazakura) and Kitataiki were on hand to welcome guests. Dohyo-iri. The Rijicho and his attendants joined by yobidashi Takuro and 36th Kimura Shonosuke. And joined by another Yokozuna in this one, Isegahama-oyakata, former 63rd Yokozuna Asahifuji. Editing in one I missed from the after-party:

Pictures from the Kyokai - 2013 Natsu, Senshuraku
Yubinhaad replied to Yubinhaad's topic in Honbasho Talk
The Kyokai have posted a few more pictures from Senshuraku. First, the lower division yusho winners receiving their prizes. The first three are seen receiving their Kyokai certificates from Asahiyama-oyakata, while Osunaarashi is seen receiving his Tamari-kai certificate from a representative of the group. Jonokuchi yusho - Shineiyama. Jonidan yusho - Ishiura. Sandanme yusho - Daieisho. Makushita yusho - Osunaarashi. Closing address from Rijicho Kitanoumi. The pageantry of the dohyo-iri - Makuuchi East and West. Yokozuna dohyo-iri, Harumafuji. Yokozuna dohyo-iri, Hakuho. Kotoyuki throws the salt ahead of his yusho-deciding bout against Tokushoryu. Kotoyuki won it to claim the first yusho of his career. Kitataiki limbering up ahead of his bout against Tochinoshin. Kitataiki won that to end with a 4-11 make-koshi, in what was a poor basho from both men. The gyoji here is Shikimori Kandayu, the yobidashi is Soichi. Myogiryu before his bout against Chiyotairyu. Myogiryu won that as well as the Gino-sho. The gyoji is Shikimori Kindayu. Kisenosato before his bout against Kotoshogiku. The latter won that, meaning the Makuuchi yusho race was over before Hakuho stepped onto the dohyo. Having won the final bout of the basho to secure his 10th zensho yusho, Hakuho receives his kensho from the retiring tate-gyoji. Satonofuji performs the yumitori-shiki. This is the last time we'll see the 36th Kimura Shonosuke on the dohyo. Hakuho and stablemate Daikiho set off on the yusho winner's parade.
