Some interesting background information in the SF Glossary about hassou-tobi ----- hassou-tobi, rare jump upwards at the tachiai by a rikishi attempting to surprise his forward leaning charging aite, when the move works it is a real crowd-pleaser and can be a spectacular way of winning; the originator of the term into sumo was moto-yokozuna Wakanohana I, originates from the story of Yoshitsune from Genji-Heishi war (1185) where according to legend Yoshitsune jumped from one enemy boat to another juking enemies around, it was said he could jump over eight boats (hassou no fune), nowadays Hayateumi has started to use this jump as part of his sumo repertoire.

It is Hayateumi's trademark and if you say hassoutobi, you think of Hayateumi Saito is using the shikona (and image) Hayateumi on his election poster, but only applied for the elections under his real name - he could have applied for both. He and his helpers use the site hayateumi.com and a YT channel for PR - and his older twitter. The posters on the site show him only now though: hayateumi.com/download His data now: 184cm, 129kg, chest 120cm, grip strength 90kg, 5.6s on a 50m dash His former occupation is sumo, it is not listed among the sports he is good at. He talks about his youth, amateur beginnings and pro sumo career at first in the presentation video for the elections https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBX-h5nnuwk&t=30s The highlight is his trademark jump, also in his profile https://hayateumi.com/profile/#sumo

Interesting information about the hassou-tobi on the SF Glossary. It mentioned that a rikishi named Hayateumi used it. I found this old YT video of one of his bouts but my browser is so old, it won't allow me to watch the video. Does it show him using the hassou-tobi?
  4. I am famously an avid henka advocator. But this is BECAUSE it's not that common. If we would be seeing henkas every other bout I would totally be turned off it, much like too-high doses of chocolate chip cookies or lentil soup, but I digress.. I like the mind games part where someone like Aminishiki's opponent is always wary about it-it adds to my suspense at least. And a few years back we had some guys (Hayateumi?) do spectacular hassoutobi henkas that were delightful and pseudo-orgasmic to behold.. That being said , I must admit that a Hakuhou henka and a Harumafuji non- henka (which is a total henka, semantics aside) will always disappoint me, regardless of the circumstances. No anger or hate, just disappointment.

    Former rikishi activities

After Kyokudozan another ex-rikishi in a regional parliament: ex-sekiwake Hayateumi, the famous jumper, Mr. Saito (40 in July) is re-elected to the Aomori prefectural assembly for Kitatsugaru-gun (Takamisakari also is from there), after winning the seat at the by-elections in September last year. http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/election/local/2015/news/20150413-OYT1T50001.html with supporters He was elected for the first time to the local Kitatsugaru-gun Itayanagi town assembly in 2012. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/society/news/2012/02/21/kiji/K20120221002674590.html then 120kg the jump, hassoutobi in Aki 2004 and winning by uwatenage against Takekaze his facebook pic Edit: the sponichi article confused me, till I realized it was from 2012

    What was your biggest disapointment?

That was such a shame, too. (I am not worthy...) I was a huge fan of Hayateumi until he began those "leaping lizard" antics. And I became an avid fan BECAUSE of the brilliant hassoutobis.. And I was a fan all the way... Hope he's fine and recovered from his neck problems...

Is that really Asanowaka being jumped over by Kyokudozan? (You are going off-topic...) I couldn't tell who it was... Such a cool move! I miss seeing that, since Hayateumi is gone, now. Leaping Lizard, who would have thought that Shu could actually jump that high! (Laughing...) Great picture of Kyokudozan doing the hassou-tobi! Thank you! ;-)

It is regarded as a henka by those that see not.. It's a hassou-tobi, perfected by now defunct Hayateumi. Fantastic, interesting exciting, everything. That loud "tsk, tsk, tsk' you can hear in the background is made up mostly of foreign fans who think too much..

    Quotes from Day 3

Hayateumi: (After a successful use of hasso-tobi) I decided to use the leap before I got on the dohyo. It's a 50-50 proposition to do something like that. Tokitsuumi: (Talking about his "found victory" on Kotoshogiku's tsukite) I had already given up. It was a 200% defeat [on my part]. Kotoshogiku: (Hands pressed together, begging the media to leave him alone) I'm really sorry, but I have no comment. Kyokushuzan: (On his crowd-pleasing staredown with Robo) It was interesting because he kept glaring back at me. That was fun. Takamisakari: (On the stare-down) Do I get p.o.'d at him? Sure, there is some of that. It's [life or death] competition for us so it does get spirited. It's also that way when I go against the yokozuna. I feel a certain chill in the air--like I'd get killed if I tried [a stunt like] pulling. Tochiazuma: (Disposing Kaiho with dispatch) I was able to attack as I had planned. He can be quite troublesome if he gets inside so I had to move forward carefully and precisely. Chiyotaikai: (Winning by hatakikomi over Kotomitsuki) In my current condition, it's tough to do "step-up" sumo. I have to be satisfied with wins like that. Miyabiyama: (Victimized by Asashoryu's uwatenage) That's the second basho in a row that he's flung me like that. I did try my very best to prevent it. Asashoryu: (After showcasing a dynamic "Wolf Special" in front of Kokonoe Oyakata who was a shinpan) I was aware that he was there. I had watched a video of him just before my bout and was impressed by how did [his awesome waza] with such a thin body. I'm pleased that I've also become somewhat like that. Kokkai: (After flinging Tosanoumi at dohyo edge) Somehow, he doesn't seem like his usual self. I sense no tension [emanating] from him. I go against the yokozuna tomorrow? Maybe, I'll show some of my brute strength. Katayama: (Salvaging a victory against Toyonoshima) I saw him step out of the ring. It's important to win one like this. Hakuho: (Losing abjectly after muffing his tachiai) I want to turn back the clock and do it over again. Hanaregoma Oyakata: (Watching Hakuho dig his own grave with a poor tachiai) He only took one step forward. If the "hit" is the basis of the tachiai, then such tactics as harite would be, if you'll pardon the expression, "flim-flam" or "b.s." sumo.

    Osaka One Day tournament

Kyokushuuzan was very angry after being robbed two days ago and did all sorts of cool stuff at the tournament. Nekodamashi (slapping both hands in front of your opponent to confuse him), Hassoutobi (Air-Hayateumi clone), which brought him to the semis. The purse for reaching the semis was 500,000 yen, 350,000 yen short of the 850,000 yen that was stolen from him. "Well, I got most of it back then.. Missing some, but still.." said Shoes-on. "I was rooting for Kyokushuuzan-zeki. What kind of a guy would steal from him? I'd sure like to see him introduce himself..", said Asashouryuu rather indignantly. Kokkai's Yusho speech: "I love Osaka!!".

    Rikishi Talk Day 9

Another try at the Mainichi "Maiku" column: ○ Kokkai: As I got pulled I didn't fall down which was good. (After falling down the hanamichi) my hip felt sore. ● Roho (defeated by Kotooshu): My aite is always doing warm-up training in the shitaku-beya with me, but if we mount the dohyo the result is different. (On day 10) it's the same with Kokkai. But off the dohyo we are best friends. ○ Takamisakari (anticipating the hassou-tobi from Hayateumi, his senpai and from the same home): Luckily I did hit the right arm. I thought that he will come up with something. ○ Ama (on the previous day losing to Dejima in a fight with "changes", moving to right and left): My oyakata (Ajigawa, former Yokozuna Asahifuji) gave me the fist. No more doing those "change moves", absolutely! I wished my body were bigger, but my body shape is good as it is now, right? "Lean and strong", as is said.

    Day 9 Rikishi Talk

Rikishi Talk Day 9 Kyushu Basho --------------------------------------- Kisenosato (vs Roho) - losing by Shitatenage ---------------------------------------------------- "I didn't have a strong finish, I didn't go hard enough. I will start all over again tomorrow doing my best." Roho (vs Kisenosato ) by Shitatenage -------------------------------------------- (On the earliest day to get kachikoshi in six bashos since becoming a sekitori.) "I knew I had Kachikoshi on the line today. As I was going against another young power, I was tryng not to get overwhelmed and was trying to get myself psyched up. I am really happy to get kachikoshi. Now I can compete more relaxed." (Enduring Kisenosato's yori without resorting to his old wrestling pulling habit told not to use by Taiho oyakata). "I go to see him every night. Initially he used to tell me, I've done well or did a good job. But lately he has been saying I am not there yet. But what the oyakata is telling me is correct and I know it's a right way to go." Hayateumi (vs Takekaze) by Oshitaoshi ----------------------------------------------- (His favorite technique, "Hassou Tobi", read and got pushed while in flight for one sided loss.) "This was the first time I have been read so completely by someone. It was a rather embarrassing." Wakanosato (vs Tamanoshima) by Yorikiri -------------------------------------------------- (On the bout today) "I tried to prepare myself against his last minute sudden moves. I think I am focusing well and competing with a good amount of tension." (Getting his kachikoshi on Day 9, the earliest since the 2001 Nagoya) "I am relieved but now comes a much more important task ahead. My next goal is to get 10 wins. I'd like to achieve it as quickly as possible. " Asashoryu (vs Kyokushuzan) by Oshidashi ------------------------------------------------- (Keeping himself steady even when he got a harite slap from Kyokushuzan.) "I guess he was thinking of some opening to get a win. You've got to go calmly, you know." (Asked if he started feeling tired.) "Not much. I am eating delicious food every day with a bit of drink and I am sleeping very well, thank you." (About last night.) "Oh..I had Shabu Shabu with three glasses of Imo(potato) Shochu (liquor). I guess one can get to have an expensive taste, you know." Kotooshu (vs Tokitenku) by Watashikomi ----------------------------------------------- (Now with 7 straight wins after two losses at the start.) "I've been training with Tokitenku since we've just started out. If I move into him, he will start hooking with his leg and I might end up getting injured so I just stayed back and waited for a chance." Chiyotaikai (vs Shimotori) by Oshidashi ---------------------------------------------- "I am finally starting to compete well. If I can get myself moving better, then I know I am on the way. When I was on the losing streak, I was suffering from injuries. I can't remember whom I lost to." "Here I am just about in my home territory (from Oita Prefecture in Kyushu) but I don't even get a single Kensho. I can't believe this. I am in debt every day." Miyabiyama (vs Tosanoumi) by Oshidashi ----------------------------------------------- (Getting his sixth win) "Yesterday I didn't even touch my opponent (because of a tachiai henka). I am tired now but I didn't move back today so I am doing well." (On Kaiou) "There is something different about him this basho. He seems to be more relaxed. Usually he is all coiled up in the Kyushu." Kaiou (vs Kotonowaka) by Oshidashi ------------------------------------------- "There is no point in trying to get the mawashi every time, you know. There is no need because I am moving well and I can just charge ahead. Anyway you know about what's transpired previously, my history. But I am not getting into counting the wins (the Rijicho indicated he'd need 13 wins for the promotion). I just have to go till the very end doing my best." Kotonowaka (vs Kaiou) losing by Oshidashi --------------------------------------------------- "He is so powerful. And he is not pulling anymore." Kyokutenho (vs Hakuho) losing by Uwatedashinage ---------------------------------------------------------- (On Hakuho's calm demeanor) "I felt he has been competing longer than me..." Hakuho (vs Kyokutenho) by Uwatedashinage ----------------------------------------------------- (Getting four consecutive kachikoshi bashos since his Makuuchi debut.) "I didn't expect to get kachikoshi this early. I guess perhaps I haven't faced too many upper ranked rikishis yet. My next goal is to win 10." (A Sanyaku ranking on the horizon - to be the third youngest Komusubi after Takahanada - 18 years 10 months at the 1991 Nagoya and Kitanoumi - 19 years 7 months at the 1973 Hatsu. And now facing Kaiou on Day 10.) "Now I feel I can go against him free and easy." Kokonoe Oyakata --------------------- (On Hakuho) "He displays a large-scale sumo. I am sure he will get bigger still so you will have no idea how strong he could become." Takamisakari (vs Hokutoriki) losing by Oshidashi --------------------------------------------------------- (His winning streak ending at five.) "I couldn't get going with my sumo at all today. I just feel miserable." (Asked if he is feeling a colder climate moving in.) "Rikishis are hot...Always competing with passion."

    Takekaze catched Hayateumi in midair...

On top of everythng, Hayateumi did a successful hassotobi on Takekaze last basho on day 13. "I wasn't gonna try it, but I kept hearing the crowd calling me to fly, so..", said Hayateumi. "No way I'm gonna 'eat' that trick twice", said Takekaze. Here is last basho's bout, courtesy of Dale: http://www.banzuke.com/~movies/aki2004/day...teu_takekaze.rm
  17. Rikishi Talk Day 3 Kyushu Basho 2004 ========================= Asashoryu (vs Iwakiyama) by Yoritaoshi ------------------------------------------------ (On his condition) "I feel better (a cold) than yesterday. Right now I am about 80% so I really need to get back into shape in the last half to hit the peak." (On attempting a Tsuri-otoshi) "There is no point in trying to do something for the sake of it. I've done it a few times during the Jyungyo tour. Don't worry, I will do the lifting when the time comes." (Perhaps Asashoryu is remembering Kokonoe oyakata's wise words to him prior to the basho start, "It's OK to do 'Tsuri-otoshi'. But during the basho, remember there is the first half and last half. Better instead to try to keep the stamina going." Still weak somewhat from a cold, Asashoryu got an IV last night to prepare for today, fully aware of the responsibility as being a lone yokozuna.) Iwakiyama (vs Asashoryu) losing by Yoritaoshi ------------------------------------------------------ (On not getting two straight wins against Asashoryu.) "The Yokozuna was very quick. He got in deep so I was afraid he'd 'tsuri-otoshi' me. I am rather happy that I kept all my body parts intact. I probably need to generate more power from below. I couldn't push him back at all." Kitanoumi Oyakata ---------------------- (On Asashoryu today) "Well he's got to know his opponent today was heavy (179 kg Iwakiyama). He must have realized he could settle with a steady sumo if he just went forward and attacked him." Takasago oyakata ---------------------- "As he has put in enough workouts prior to this basho, his sumo has a smooth flow. There is no jerkier lightness about him." Kaiou (vs Kokutenho) by Yorikiri --------------------------------------- "Today I was able to get the mawashi with both hands, move forward and go for attack." (With all the reporters surrounding him, jokingly but probably with a bit of his true feeling.) "It's just others are making this a big deal for me you know. People around here have just too much noise. Hope you all leave me alone now." Kyokutenho (vs Kaiou) losing by Yorikiri ------------------------------------------------ "I didn't have any idea what to do today." Buyuzan (vs Hayateumi) - losing by Hatakikomi ------------------------------------------------------- (On being a victim of Hayateumi's world renowned "Hassou Tobi") "Really, he jumped so high. It was like...my head was slam dunked by a NBA Basketball player." Hayatemui (vs Buyuzan) - by Hatakikomi ------------------------------------------------ (Winning by hatakikomi after a well executed 'Hassou Tobi' jump.) "It was just a sudden move. But I just let you know, guys, this is just once in a basho thing." (On getting hit by the gyoji's gunbai on his left knee) "You won't believe how really painful that was. Ouch..." Musoyama (vs Kokkai) losing by Uwatenage --------------------------------------------------- (On Kokkai) "I've had some training sessions with him so I knew he has been gaining more strength." (On losing three consecutive bouts since Day 1 in this Kadoban basho.) "I don't think my hit after tachiai was not that bad but I couldn't follow it with the second and third steps on the dohyo. I am not in the worst conditions nor the best. I believe a little thing can still change the flow for me. I will come back tomorrow and do the best I can." Kokkai (vs Musoyama) bu Uwatenage -------------------------------------------- "I was thinking of moving forward once I got the mawashi." (Asked about his record of winning four straight bouts against Musoyama). "Right, I know. I imagine if I can hit him that hard...." Kisenosato (vs Tokitsumu) losing by Yorikiri ---------------------------------------------------- (Asked if Makuuchi "tachiai" is different from the Juryo's.) "I don't think it's that much different you know. I will do my best again tomorrow." Takamisakari (vs Kotooshu) losing by Kubinage -------------------------------------------------------- (On his first meeting with 2.04 meter tall Kotooshu) "It's so tough going against someone that big." (Asked about his strategy) "I am a kind that doesn't have any strategy. I went hard against him and lost, so what else can I say?" Kotomitsuki (vs Wakanosato) by Sotogake ------------------------------------------------- (Winning the bout in the last second by Sotogake.) "Yeah, if it wasn't for that, I'd definitely have lost today. I got into the position(Wakanosato's kotenage) and thought, Trouble (actual Japanese word used is much more cool, 'Yabai'). It was a desparate move." Chiyotaikai (vs Kakizoe) by Hikiotoshi ------------------------------------------- (Asked about his injured left elbow) "Well if I have a bout as short as today's, it will be all right. But still a pain is a pain." (As opposed to 'life is life' I conjecture (Eh?) Tochiazuma (vs Tochinonada) by Yorikiri ---------------------------------------------- (On winning as a good medicine theory to what's ailing him.) "I am hoping it is. But frankly speaking I am not moving at all." (Looking down on his left knee supporter) "You know it's only the the third day..." Hakuho (vs Tosanoumi) by Yorikiri ----------------------------------------- (On getting out of tachiai badly) "I thought he did a 'Matta' so I was about to raise my arms when all of sudden he came bursting out on me. I was really surprised and it made me rushed. Ah..I could have lost easily today." +++++++++++++++++ After their Directors meeting held today, the Kyokai said they would be making a donation of 10 Million Yen to the Niigata Earthquake victims. ------- To commemorate the 80th anniversary of receiving a public foundation designation, the Kyokai will be discounting a limited number of seats for the three Tokyo bashos next year. For Masu Seat "C" that normally goes for 9,200 Yen per person (requiring to buy four tickets), they will offer it as a pair of two seats (meaning you only need to buy two tickets rather than four. For General seating (chair seats), they will offer the 30 of these seats for 20,000 Yen if you buy it for the full basho.

Rikishi Talk Day 13 Aki 2004

Odd that nobody has mentioned this. It looked like a really airborne hassou-tobi even for Hayateumi. One of his ultimate ones and suitable to try that against short Takekaze!

    Sumo glossary stuff

Today's featured terms come from H, I and J. hassou-tobi, rare jump upwards at the tachiai by a rikishi attempting to surprise his forward leaning charging aite, when the move works perfectly it can be a crowd-pleaser and a spectacular way of winning; the originator of the term into sumo was moto-yokozuna Wakanohana I, originates from the story of Yoshitsune from Genji-Heishi war (1185) where according to legend Yoshitsune jumped from one enemy boat to another juking enemies around, it was said he could jump over eight boats, nowadays Hayateumi has started to use this jump as part of his sumo repertoire hitorizumo, part of rice planting ceremony practised at least from the 14th century onwards where a rikishi named Ichirikizan (name apparently varies according to the locality) has three torikumi under gyoji's supervision against the imagined rice plant spirit (ine no seirei) which he ultimately loses in order to appease the spirits and secure the crops, also an idiom in Japan with "hitori-zumo o toru" meaning literally "to do sumo on your own", idiom refers to a situation where one is struggling by oneself trying to make things better but seemlingly with no clear positive end in sight Amanogawa gave a good example of the usage of this idiom :-D A girl who's in love with one boy. This girl and the boy are going out for awhile. But seemingly he does not care for her as much as she does. She would do anything to please him, thinking a lot of wonderful plans and trying to going out of her way to make him happy. She would do everything to make time being with him. She would arrange her life to make things work out for them together. But then suddenly one question comes across to her mind... "Nandaka hitori-zumo o totte iru mitai" ( Seems like I'm doing hitori-zumo... ) hiza, knee, often injured bodypart in sumo This is the bodypart connecting the thigh and lower leg. Very essential body part. Without mobile knees it would be very difficult to have a smooth gait. Knee has strong ligaments and interesting structure. Take care of your knees. If you don't know what a knee is, take your palm downwards sliding the frontal part of your thigh until you reach a bony structure. You have reached the head of thigh bone and around that area you can find a KNEE. ichimon-betsu so-atari, rule abolished in 1966 (?) that prevented torikumi, kettei-sen and tomoe-sen excluded, between rikishi who belonged to separate heya belonging to the same ichimon, see heya-betsu so-atari, kojin-betsu so-atari Year is uncertain it seems but this is a bad rule. Very bad rule. It is very good that this very bad rule was abolished. Bad rules should always be abolished because good rules are better than bad rules. ipponzeoi, kimarite, classic seio-nage where rikishi wraps his arm around foe's arm and lifts him up while pivoting and throws him over his shoulder, very rare in sumo due to heavy weights, necessity to avoid touching down with one's knee before foe hits the clay and the lack of cloth to grab Most ipponzeoi are rather uninspiring in sumo. More like desperate attempts and not very illustrative. Lately Takekaze did a very good ipponzeio in makuuchi though. jiriki, "on his own", rikishi who is pursuing yusho and is one shiroboshi behind his do-beya can't achieve yusho by jiriki since he can't fight against his do-beya because of heya-betsu so-atari rule and hence must wait for some other heya's rikishi to cause kuroboshi to his do-beya so that winning records would become even and a chance to kettei-sen would become possible, see kojin-betsu so-atari Asashoryu wasn't jiriki when Hokutoriki was one win ahead before senshuraku and wasn't scheduled against Shoryu.

Day 12 results and day 13 pairings

Sorry, no videos from Makushita and Juryo bouts as the recording didn't work today. :'-( But I used the time to make videos of the missing Makuuchi bouts from days 4, 6 and 9 of Dale's videos; you can find them on the proper days on my page. I think the recurrence of Hayateumi's successful hasso-tobi trick on day 6 hasn't been mentioned yet? :-P Interesting that Kyokushuzan also tried that trick again, but again failed... (Applauding...)
