Whatta bout Sumo

Goshobiyama (Ryan from Grand Sumo Breakdown) caught a 7-8 record on this one which means his KachiKoshi streak is over. It was the longest active one in the game and he stopped short of getting the record. Very sad. This was also a sad basho for the GSB heya of guessers as a whole as our club no longer is represented at rank 1. Between Goshobiyama and Asset a member of our club chat held the top spot for a long time, but it has been surrendered to Duden who is a stranger to us. Overall I'm still happy to see lots of people from our chat in the high ranks. 5 of the top 10 ranks are held by our people which is still very cool. I myself also had my best Basho so far, doing less bad than many in a terrible banzuke. Got 18th and shot up to rank 56 overall. Yay! Nanikitanohito surging! As with the last Basho, the Grand Sumo Breakdown Podcast's discord community has it's own little banzuke guessing heya. We've not gotten everyone's final submission yet, but we got 13 of them and I compiled them and made a consensus average banzuke out of it. There are some big time guessers in this club so it's fun to do. HUGE disagreement on this one.

By the by, what I really liked about our little guessing community doing this consensus Banzuke is that we have a very large mixture of players. We have several GTB top performers like Goshobiyama and CaptainSmarta$$ and Asset, and we have several decent middle of the pack people ranking in the low 100's like me (Nanikitanohito), Wakatakasake and Kajuyanosho... and then we have some very new guessers just starting out like RevTrev and Phredd. So we form a "heya" of people who have all different experience levels with this game, and we learn from each other and discuss quite passionately basho by basho after the deadline day when we can all show our final guesses to each other, and then even more once the real Banzuke drops. So we're all improving bit by bit as well learning from each other. It's a great little gang. There are some more people in the group too who did not have their submission screenshotted, so I'll add them after the Banzuke drops and the archives update with everyone's guess.

I was a huge forum-head way back in like pre-2011. I was the top poster unlocking new forum ranks by post count back on like... the SuperSkarmory fan forums on NightBlue like waaaay back in the day. I was pretty big into Ning forums too through nerdfighteria community cliques. But when I got to high school in 2012 I kinda fell off all that as forums died left, right and center with the rise of reddit. Eventually when Discord came around it kinda re-introduced "small community internet" which I really liked. I never took to Reddit because of how it's so open and huge and centralised, so from like 2012 to 2017 I was pretty much homeless on the internet and just wasn't online much at all, which maybe was actually quite good for my late teen years cause I had a very active IRL life then. But with Discord I found the internet again and being an adult with a job the IRL stuff got much harder to keep up with anyway so it came at the right time. That said though, it will be fun to try a good old style forum again. I am finding that the posting infrastructure here is really smooth compared to what I recall from pre-2011. The way these quotes function and the way I can super easily share images with a URL without needing to memorize all the BB-code stuff is very nice.

Everyone I know has gone for 7 San'yaku. The reason is that "wanting balanced banzuke" rarely ever seems to factor into things, and so instead we look at precedent for forcing open a new San'yaku slot. The scenario we have now, if I recall research I did on SumoDB back in March, used to always force open a new Komusubi slot back in the day about like a decade ago or so it swapped and since then it never forced open another Komusubi slot, with like 3 instances of precedent to support that the shift was real and not just happenstance. Actually someone else in the discord server I'm in did the same research and I think posted it... let me see if I can find the SumoDB query they posted... Oh, here it is. Hi people. I'm Whatta. I've been a long time lurker since I started watching Sumo in 2017, around when Takayasu was a shin-Ozeki. I finally had the inspiration to actually make an account here rather than just read the forums. As for where you might know me from in the Sumo fan world, I was in the very early days a very active member on the "Grand Sumo Discord", and even a moderator for a short stint before I stopped using that server. I'm also a very active part of the Grand Sumo Breakdown podcasts fanbase and have been since their second ever episode. I've frequently contributed fan content to that show and I appeared once as a guest host on a special episode talking about injuries in Sumo. If you hang out in their patreon Discord you'll see me there all the time in the discussions. I also enjoy playing Guess the Banzuke, though I'm not very good at it. My shikona in that game is "Nanikitanohito". Nani for "What" in "Whatta", and Kita no Hito as "Person of the north", cause I'm from Sweden. I once had a small youtube channel where I posted some Sumo meme videos and some pretty popular Basho storyline summaries and highlights, but the big basho summary videos got taken down for copyright so it's a bit of a relic these days.
