Rick Garza has already shown great signs of developing his ring sense. Sean Byrd improves his already great tawara work. Some of Stephen Pretto's bouts were missed, but he proved his balance is nothing short of impressive. Kashōkuma (Drew Bramlett) ramps up his power from the tachiai and shows he has what it takes to stay inside the dohyō for as long as needed. Miseba (Khalil Collins) goes on what may be the longest king-of-the-hill run we've seen, he even yorikiri-ed his asthma out of the ring. Liz Dixon (Kurowashi's roommate) joins us for the basics! Kurowashi (Matt Jim) really shines and gets the most wins he's seen in a keiko so far. Akakokkaku (Dakota Eggert) tries out tsuppari for the first time... While he has the speed, he needs to work on power. When Hananooni (Jonathan Flowers) wants to put your cardio and conditioning to the test, you'd better be ready for a lengthy bout. Osuushigishi (Jared Tadlock) once again holds a seminar in diversifying your kimarite. Dallas Oyakata (Corey Morrison) starts on a good note, but can't seem to find his footing against larger opponents after dropping to lightweight.

Dallas Sumo Club - Keiko Highlights (March 27, 2022) Note: We're adding short interviews with the rikishi at the end of the videos to help you learn more about us, give club updates and hear the perspective of our sumotori. Osuushigishi (Jared Tadlock) proves again why he is our club's heyagashira, but definitely has to work hard for it. Sean Byrd hosted a senshūraku watch party for the Haru Basho the evening before practice and while everyone's a little hungover and groggy, his tsuppari are just as brutal as ever. Kurowashi (Matt Jim) gives his body a bit of a break during our warm up and saves his energy for more bouts. Albert Martinez is a multitool of technique and his fire simply cannot be extinguished by anyone but himself. Mike Hammond's ring-sense continues to grow and has become a viciously strong oshi-zumō specialist. Akakokkaku (Dakota Eggert) acts strictly as gyōji for this practice, as he was saving his energy for a Lightspeed Saber League tournament in the evening. Dallas Oyakata (Corey Morrison) is now officially competing as a lightweight and now must navigate new ways to secure wins against his heavier opponents. Dallas Sumo Club - Keiko Highlights (March 20, 2022) The Brothers Garza (Rey, Rick & Bubba) join us as our latest shin-deshi after jumping in the dohyō at a public sumo exhibition we held last weekend. Their experience in wrestling helps them easily find their footing in sumo. Steven Cao returns to practice and once again shows his strength and fighting spirit. Osuushigishi (Jared Tadlock) goes on a splendid king of the hill run, demonstrating his ability to supply a defense against different opponents attack styles. Hananoni (Jonathan Flowers) thirst for battle can never be satisfied until injury is sustained. Albert Martinez deploys a powerful oshi-zumo style, while keeping his yotsu-zumo skillset in his back pocket for when he needs to summon it. Mike Hammond exudes raw power, sending several of his fellow sumotori flying out of the ring or causing them to give up at the tawara. Kashōkuma (Drew Bramlett) returns and really puts the medal to the medal with his improving tachiai and ring sense. Miseba (Khalil Collins) although injured, insisted on proving his talents and superb balance. Dallas Oyakata (Corey Morrison) rallies the troops and attempts to improve his wins to losses ratio.

David McGibbon tried his hand at sumo for the very first time and had great form during suriashi. Dallas Sumo Club's okamisan, Siggy Sauer, joins us for our pre-fight exercises. Albert Martinez ignites the fire for combat deep within and pushes himself to the absolute limit. Osuushigishi (Jared Tadlock) goes toe-to-toe, bringing his wrestling background to the forefront. Mike Hammond proves that several months off sumo didn't do much to his skillset and snatches some formidable wins. Dallas Oyakata (Corey Morrison) thrusts a lightning fast nodowa and tries to stay low, but ends up becoming a ragdoll several times.

Dallas Sumo Club - Keiko Highlights (February 13, 2022) Patrick Hubbard (blue belt BJJ) tried his legs at sumo and was able to stay in the ring for quite some time. Once learning the basics, he'll surely become a fierce opponent. Jessica Byrd straps on the mawashi and goes over the basics of sumo, including the tachiai. Sean Byrd, her husband and our team-mate with the most dangerous hands in DFW returns to the dohyō after a small break. Our faces enjoyed the vacation, but missed our giant. Albert Martinez was completely on fire today and dominated after finding his footing. He's definitely ready for the upcoming Mighty Eagle 16th Texas Classic Sumo Tournament in San Antonio this upcoming Saturday! Kashōkuma (Drew Bramlett) is able to get back into the ring after delivering a yorikiri to an illness. Once he falls back to basics, he delivers some confident wins. Stephen Pretto gets better on his feet and is able to maneuver well at the tawara for some well-deserved wins. Osuushigishi (Jared Tadlock) maintains his status as a wicked foe in dohyō and technical artist with a parry to every oncoming attack. Hananooni (Jonathan Flowers) stays wild and constantly moving, frustrating his opposition. Kurowashi (Matt Jim) is able to ward off most smaller competition, but is sometimes taken off balance by a last ditch effort. Dallas Oyakata (Corey Morrison) has a bit of a rough practice, but is able to obtain a few wins.

We'd love a proper amateur dohyō! It's one of our 2022 goals. They're several thousand dollars and we practice inside of someone else's gym so we cannot build anything permanent. We're a free club, so our members all chip-in to buy team gear. Our battle rope is 15.9ft in circumference and a proper dohyō is 14.9ft, so ours is technically about a foot wider than it should be. A lot of our guys are taller than the average Japanese sumotori, so it may look a bit smaller. In our newest keiko highlight video we used a very wide angle lens, so during suriashi the image looks highly disproportionate.

Dallas Sumo Club - Keiko Highlights (February 6, 2022) Albert Martinez's impeccable balance and ring awareness keeps his opponents grasping at straws for a counter-attack. Osuushigishi (Jared Tadlock) uses his head as a lethal weapon, bulldozing whomever opposes him in the dohyō. Hananooni (Jonathan Flowers) greats some well deserved wins with classic straight-forward oshi-zumo. Kurowashi (Matt Jim) uses his colossal frame to muscle-out anyone foolish enough to stand directly in his wake. Dallas Oyakata (Corey Morrison) finds some luck in the beginning bouts, but is quickly out-gunned by his fellow sumotori until gaining a second wind and focusing on his brand of sumo.

Dallas Sumo Club - Keiko Highlights (January 30, 2022) Texan by way of Xinjiang, China... Welcome our shin-deshi; Steven Cao! He's a natural at sumo and won the majority of his matches at his very first keiko. Once he has the basics under his mawashi, he'll be a real force to be reckoned with. He has the determined spirit it takes, the muscle to back it up and the grit of a true cowboy. Akakokkaku (Dakota Eggert) uses his speed and agility to even the odds against larger opponents and gets some wins he's been training hard for. Albert Martinez doesn't give away a grip on his mawashi unless he's using it as an advantage in his bouts. Kurowashi (Matt Jim) uses his large frame and superb strength to act as a wall between our sumotori and their goals. Stephen Pretto joins us for a warm-up and cheers from the sidelines. Dallas Oyakata (Corey Morrison) is able to subdue his larger teammates, but is out-gunned by the agility of his smaller comrades.
