    More animal close encounters.

If you have dogs or cats, one of the worst smells of Earth comes after their encounter with a skunk.

    Women and Sumo

That was good exposure for amateur sumo in the U.S. People have to actually see the sport to get interested in trying it.

    Happy Birthday, Akinomaki!

Happy birthday. I second @sumojoann. I learn so much from your posts. I particularly appreciate the kesho-mawashi posts and the Japanese insights you always give. I think the school kesho-mawashi post is my favorite post on the forum.

    Banzuke for Haru 2021

Definitely not the sort of record to be proud of.

    NSK Youtube Basho Archive

I fall into the camp that loves old sports broadcasts. I spend lots of time watching old Formula 1 races and reading history about the races and drivers. I already spend lots of time reading about sumo history, so watching old basho would be wonderful for me. However, there needs to be a little effort made to make it user friendly for international fans. I don’t need (or expect) full English commentary, but at least an effort to write a short description in English would be wonderful.

    Special Kyokai training before Haru

I really hope the sessions are streamed again. That was very interesting to watch last time around.

Sumo articles by journalists who are Forum members/or not

That article is also published in the Washington Post. The newspaper audience isn't all that knowledgeable about sumo.

    New kesho mawashi

I don't see anything about it on page 6 of this thread. It's talked about on page 11. It's too bad the photos from the older posts don't seem to work anymore.

    New kesho mawashi

What was Terunofuji wearing today for day 15? It looked just solid black. I didn’t get a great view from the tv image, but it looked like there was something in it with a different texture.

Congratulations to Daieisho! I’m incredibly happy to be a member of this forum. Prior to day 1 of the basho, there was a tremendous amount of doom and gloom in other online communities. I think we can all agree that we were thoroughly entertained for the past 15 days. It was far from the sham basho that many outside of this forum were predicting.
  11. Despite all the odds, we have a basho starting tomorrow. I’ll get us started with our utterly ridiculous predictions for fun. We will make it through all 15 days with 5,000 spectators present.

Sumo and Head Injury / Concussion

Those videos are shocking. I found myself screaming "help him" at my computer screen.

I agree that it's very surprising to see. He can bounce back though. Onosho recovered well from his 0-13 start back in July.

Maybe he started sometime between May-July 2019? I'll leave it up to those skilled in Japanese to correct that. Nikkan Sport Article on Shohoryu

Rikishi Status - 2021 Hatsu Basho

Let's hope the record stands at 17 and we don't lose anymore. I think this Takakeisho kyujo will surprise absolutely no one.

Welcome to the forum. Even if you can’t find fellow sumo fans in Indonesia, you can find lots here!

Today may have been the best day of the basho for me so far. All of my favorites won. I’m really happy to see Asanoyama string together some good performances. I wonder how much of his slow starts the last few basho are because he has no one near his level in the heya to practice with?

The Takakeisho kadoban train keeps rolling on. Crazy to see him in such poor form after last tournament.

Absolutely agree! There was a lot of negativity in other places online going into the first few days. Let's definitely keep our fingers crossed though and knock on wood for a successful second week.

Akiseyama isn't ranked at M17 at least. We had enough winners from M17 in 2020. Terutsuyoshi's sald throw may not be quite as high tomorrow. The way he was holding his arm looked like it's going to be a little sore tomorrow.

oops! My two favorite sports are Formula 1 and Sumo. So it’s natural to mix up two legendary Murray’s. Haha.

2021 "Kozumo" Hatsu Basho discussion thread

I just want to take a moment to show some appreciation to Murray Walker and his commentary. After Akua lost, he tried to do some sort of flip back up onto his feet. Akua is a large man, so of course he only got about halfway. Nevertheless, the crowd audibly chuckled. On the commentary, Murray said “that’s probably the only impressive thing he did in that bout and it wasn’t during the bout.”
