I think I count 5 swaps between our entries, worth 14 points: Ichinojo-Tamawashi, Midorifuji-Kagayaki, Akiseyama-Kotoshoho, Terutsuyoshi-Aoiyama, and Yutakayama-Hidenoumi. I demoted the 7-8's when at all possible, but was more lenient with a couple of the 6-9's, and gave Kotoshoho a big benefit of the doubt.

Chris Gould's video gives yet another interpretation of the playoff: 8-man first round + bye, one of the 4 winners chosen by lot to fight an elimination bout against the bye, then a straight elimination tournament among the 4 remaining rikishi.

More than investigating where he caught it, they are interested in where in his body the virus settled.. It seems it is not a new infection, " explained Shibatayama PR man. He is asymptomatic.
You can keep testing positive by PCR for quite a while after an infection. The virus is gone, but some RNA hangs around and the test is sensitive enough to pick it up.

Man, yeah, that was like a round of kawaigari.

And then there's Onishiki. Makes komusubi in his second top-division tournament due to a combination of good banzuke luck and what looks like an odd over-promotion (how did he get the slot over Mienoumi/Takamiyama?), promptly goes 3-12, spends the next 15 years bouncing between Makuuchi and Juryo, never reaching san'yaku again.

I mean, obviously he needs to not have a bad basho if he's to make Ozeki

I know; I don't think the db has the flexibility to find sekiwake debuts that were not preceded by appearances at komusubi.

Here's a query to get you started.

If they're allowing demotions of up to a rank for the absent guys, they could do something like this, which is a lot less crazy. Only Ura would have any real cause to complain.
Tokushoryu(3-12 M8e) J1 Akua(5-10 M13e)
Ishiura(0-0 J1e) J2 Daishomaru(11-4 J8w)
Chiyomaru(0-0 J2e) J3 Chiyonoo(0-0 J2w)
Enho(0-0 J3e) J4 Churanoumi(7-7 J3w)
Kyokushuho(0-0 J4w) J5 Sadanoumi(5-10 M17e)
Wakamotoharu(0-0 J5e) J6 Chiyootori(0-0 J5w)
Ura(10-5 J10e) J7 Kyokutaisei(0-0 J7e)- 2

Would Nishikifuji have been promoted back to Juryo if he had lost that bout and ended the tournament with a 5-2 record? Or would Shohoryu have taken that spot with a 7-0 record and a championship under his mawashi? Could he have also have bumped Nishikifuji out of Juryo promotion if he had won the playoff?
The playoff is irrelevant for the purposes of the banzuke. But a 7-0 would have guaranteed promotion for Shohoryu. Whether that would have bumped a 5-2 Nishikifuji or Ichiyamamoto, 4-3 but two ranks higher, I'm not sure.

Although the promotion standards got a lot tighter after Futahaguro.

That's pretty much exactly what I have. It's awfully harsh on a few rikishi, and especially Churanoumi (a drop of 3 full ranks after a 7-7-1 record), but I don't know what else they can do.

I mean, J7 isn't horrible, and far from what I think will be the worst banzuke luck.

I'm really glad we're not playing GTJB—assuming the absent guys are frozen, there are 5 other rikishi who really belong in the top 10 slots, and 3 slots in which to put them.

I've encountered some puzzlers a little higher than that.

I'd also add 18 year old Atamifuji, 6-1 in his first basho, Jonokuchi 25E, who beat Arauma for the Jonokuchi yusho in a playoff.

A good kachikoshi will find him in Juryo in March. The way the other results shook out, I think 4-3 would have found him in Juryo. As it is, that (last) slot should go to Ichiyamamoto. And there are lots of candidates for the Makushita promotion zone, so the 3-4 will probably drop Roga below it, meaning he's likely to need a 7-0 in March to make Juryo. What a difference one win makes!

Pretty unusual, though it did happen this past July. (Edit: it's more unusual than the query suggests, as some of those instances had 4 junior sanyaku with 9+ wins, but there were extra slots.)

And a trip to Makushita ... or intai.

I know Kagayaki has been a very lucky boy recently, but a half-rank drop after a 6-9 would take that to another level.
