So it’s official then? Both Yokozuna are out?

    68th All Japan championships

Good for him, that’s great. Still, I really wish he would have gone pro.

    Hokutoumi pulls an Ip Man

Reminiscent of the time that the legendary George Foreman fought and beat 5 guys in one night:
  4. I was curious to see which of the Yokozuna past & present that you all favor. Even if they were active before you started watching sumo, based on footage you have seen, or research you have done, who is your all time favorite Yokozuna and why? If you can’t narrow it down to just one, feel free to list a few.

    Favorite Yokozuna? Past And Present

Exactly! My wife walked into the room during one and said “what the hell are you watching?” Hahaha. Those commercials are comedy gold.

Great Chiyonofuji documentary in English narration with some awesome interviews with a few other legends:

Do you collect BBM Sumo cards?

I wish I had some. Been thinking about collecting for a while now, just haven’t pulled the trigger.

This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!

What’s up with all of this talk of nervousness from Asanoyama? Is he being modest, or does he actually get this nervous each time he steps on the dohyo?

    Shiko by everyone

I believe it is considerably more than 100, like several hundred per day.

    Rikishi Families In Attendance?

Unlike many other sports, I don’t recall ever seeing the wives/families of rikishi shown in attendance at a basho. Is it not customary for their families to go to the basho and watch, or is it just not shown in the broadcast? Also, if wives and kids do usually attend, do they get comped tickets?

    Rikishi Families In Attendance?

Wow, I have no idea how I missed all of these examples over the years, I guess I must have blinked haha. Thank you all very much, good stuff.

    Asahifuji kanreki dohyo-iri

100kg at 60 years of age? Good for him, that’s awesome to hear. Glad to see that he is keeping himself in good shape. Can’t wait to see his kanreki dohyo-iri, I hope he is able to do so soon. This yo yo weight gain/weight loss is not good for the body so the sooner he can get back to maintaining a lower weight the better. A big happy birthday to Asahifuji, and may there be many more to come.

    Former rikishi activities

Yep, 67 years old and still kicking. I must say I am pleasantly surprised by this as it seems he has been in poor health for so many years now....

    What’s For Dinner Tonight?

Tonight I made Japanese curry for the first time. Unfortunately I forgot to get chicken so it ended up being a tofu curry, but it was delicious all the same. What did you all have for dinner?
  15. Does anybody know of any documentaries or in-depth promotions on Musashimaru? I want to know more about him and see more footage of not only his matches, but his training and his time as Yokozuna. But there doesn’t seem to be much out there....surely he must have been filmed a great deal while he was Yokozuna?

    Musashimaru Documentaries/Promotions?

Thank you! I will definitely check out this thread. I agree, he even almost seems shy. I have seen a couple of the vids you mentioned where Konishiki does most of the talking, but I guess I just figured it was because Konishiki loved to talk haha. Oh wow, that video of him and his family sounds priceless! If you ever do come across it again, please post. Thanks again Amamaniac.

    Sumo films

I’m a huge Zatoichi fan so I was stoked when I came across this episode featuring a sumo wrestler. Enjoy:

1940's Short Clip of Japanese Sumo Wrestling

Yeah that’s what I was thinking because it definitely has that vibe to it, but I wasn’t sure if the sashes were based on some historical ceremonial garb that has since phased out of sumo. I can’t find anything online about them, so it must be strictly for the movie. Thank you for your input.

1940's Short Clip of Japanese Sumo Wrestling

Right, my question is regarding this clip. I have never seen sashes in sumo before and would like to know the story behind this (if any).

1940's Short Clip of Japanese Sumo Wrestling

Does anybody know the story behind the sashes that the rikishi are wearing at the beginning of the video? I’ve never seen such garments worn by sumo wrestlers before....

    Favorite Yokozuna? Past And Present

I thought that strange as well. For my part, I am not a huge fan of Takanohana for some reason. He just never really grabbed my attention the way that other past Yokozuna have, and I was always more a fan of Akebono which I’m sure plays into it somehow. In fact, dare I say that I prefer Wakanohana? I remember a couple of his matches fondly. But I admit that it has been some time since I last revisited Taka’s career. Time to watch some old matches of his to see if my opinion has changed.

    Hello From Seattle

Greetings All, I have been a fan of the forum for a couple of years now as a guest but haven’t had the time to join and post until now. But I am happy to be a part of the SF community now and look forward to getting to know you all and hearing how you came to enjoy this sport that we all love so much. I have nobody in my life who shares my passion for sumo (though my wife tries to watch somewhat enthusiastically with me) so I can’t wait to have people to discuss it with. Kaio made me a fan of ozumo back in about 2011 and I have been hooked ever since. While I obviously enjoy watching current sumo, I am fascinated by sumo’s rich history and love studying the sekitori of the past and most of my favorites are from long before I started watching sumo. My other interests include boxing, strongman, and all things Jurassic Park. Can’t wait to get to know you all throughout the years but if you have any questions for/about me, feel free to ask.
