I wonder why wrestlers like Kato retire. He's only been there a year and while his record is pretty appalling it doesn't seem as if he gave himself a chance to improve. Of course I'm not in his stable and don't know him so he could have an excellent reason for retiring.

Aki Basho 2021 - Discussion Thread (Spoilers!)
bessantj replied to Seiyashi's topic in Honbasho Talk
Better those than Tochinoshin. -
After hearing that Asahisho has retired and he'll go into coaching I wondered what other wrestlers do when they retire. Most I hear about tend to be from the top division so often go into coaching but what about the wrestlers who never made it past the lower divisions Yoshimura Keita for example. He is 30 and never got higher than Sandanme 72. Do they get any help from the supporters clubs or JSA? Are they left to their own devices?
-
Thank you to both of you. Quite informative post Seiyashi and I'll have a look at that thread Yamanashi.

Day 15 excitement in Juryo coming up!
-
Yes, I missed his first visit to the division so I'm excited to see him back there. Good win for Enho.
-
That's good to hear.
-
Thank you very much for the answer. I'm interested to see how he will do in future bashos.

Quick question about a lower division wrestler. Ishizaki entered the rankings at sd100. He's 22 so does that suggest that he won some tournament or did well enough in university sumo to grant him entry to higher division rather than the usual Jonokuchi ranking?
-
Impressive by Terunofuji. The only sanyaku he didn't beat was Takayasu. He almost cleared out the top of the division. I don't follow Aoiyama that much but March really seems to be a good month for him.
-
Yeah. he'll want to be winning some yushos and not just making kk. No doubt he'll have been managing his injuries outside of the bashos as well and if he does get this yusho no doubt it will give him a lot of confidence. Plus the field is very different from his first run, no Kisenosato, Kakuryu, Harumafuji or Goeido and probably little sign of Hakuho.
-
I think Terunofuji making it back to Ozeki is an amazing comeback. But with his knees he'll do well to be competitive at Ozeki and avoid kadoban so going kyujo once he has 8 wins wouldn't be a surprise.

Thank you for the recommendation, I will have a read of that.

Promotion/Demotion and Yusho discussion Haru 2021

Bushozan is looking a little precarious as well. -
I suppose after Shonannoumi's concussion I shouldn't be surprised at anything.

Promotion/Demotion and Yusho discussion Haru 2021
bessantj replied to Asashosakari's topic in Honbasho Talk
If Daishoho wins his last bout and goes 6-1 is he more or less guaranteed to be in Juryo next basho? -
You'd think they'd be quicker to get to someone who has suffered a serious injury.
-
Ha ha, oh sorry it's early in the morning and I didn't make the connection.
-
Was that Hibikiryu the Sandanme guy? I've only seen a picture of him knocked out. It looked terrible and to be left on the dohyo for eight minutes?
-
I was not expecting Terunofuji to do that to Shodai. You could call the police because there has been a murder!
-
Akinoshima holds the record of most kinboshi with 16, that includes 4 against Chiyonofuji! Even back in the 80s/90s that must have been a tidy little bonus to his pay.
-
Yes, I was a bit surprised by that. Maybe he farted in the presence of an elder and they just don't like him!
-
Now there's a man that liked Makushita.
-
I do get the sense that requirements for promotion/demotion are quite malleable, I'm guessing that if, for some reason, there were no Ozeki then Terunofuji would have a much better chance of getting promoted. I'm hoping the more I follow Sumo the more i'll get in tune with the "feeling" of who is going where.
-
Thank you. Still a bit new to sumo and navigating what constitutes a promotion can be a bit confusing.
