My first exposure to sumo was on television in Japan while stationed outside Tokyo with the U.S. Air Force. In May 1962 I attended the 7th day of the tournament in the old Kuramae Kokugikan. I got there early in the day, before noon, and watched the lower divisions leading up to the two Yokozuna's bouts, Taiho and Kashiwado, around 5 PM. My favorite rikishi was Sadanoyama. I have visited Japan often over the years, but only attended live events twice more. Over the last dozen years we have had access to TV Japan on our cable subscription, (an outrages $25 per month for the ONE channel), and watch the NHK Highlight show during each of the six yearly basho. Discovered this forum today in The Japan Times and joined immediately. Look forward sharing news and opinions. Gambarimasu/cheers.
