Onokatsu's appearance on the Kyushu 2023 banzuke doesn't show the high rank marker. It also doesn't show on the banzuke itself. I'll also add that his profile lists his highest rank as "Gyoji"

Loving the shikona Tenshoho, much better than Kiho or Hakuoho.
-
A quick query suggests he is the first. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&form1_rank=J&form1_y=on&sort_basho=2&sort_by=rank (Genbuyama doesn't appear on the next banzuke as he was demoted to Makushita, the DB not having complete data on toriteki pre-1936. He retired in 1932.)

Wow. Less than a year after his Makuuchi yusho, and right after taking the Juryo yusho (that has to be a first, right?) His career was certainly one-of-a-kind, and quite the roller-coaster. It looks almost unrealistic looking back at it. He was fun to watch for his boulder-like ways in the ring, and i'm sure i and many others will miss him.

Jeez, he's lost so much weight! interesting to see that he's kept the topknot, even this long after retirement. -

That actually makes sense. but here he's lost, and presumably not demoted... -
Promotion/Demotion and Yūshō Discussion Haru 2023

Maybe Tsushimanada was spared because he was scheduled against rikishi like Ichinojo and Ochiai late into the basho, even though their records were vastly different? -
I'm in!
-
Very interesting fact, but i thought i'd let you know it's 86 years
-
Really! now that i look at it he seems to have such consistently good banzuke luck. It's weird how he lucks out so often. Conversely he doesn't seem to have great promotion luck. Is the banzuke committee conspiring to keep Kagayaki squarely at low Maegashira, no more no less?
-
Has Ichinojo broken the record for fastest fall to Juryo after a yusho?
-
True, but let's be honest. He didn't have much of an ozeki career like most other ozeki who retired to avoid falling to juryo (Konishiki, Kirishima, etc.) Apart from Kotoshogiku, the other two ozeki who fought in juryo after falling naturally were Miyabiyama and Daiju. doesn't that say something? additionally, this is a new era and the standards for retirement are different. I could easily see Tochinoshin continuing in juryo for a time. He could bounce back, but i see him staying in juryo until his retirement early next year.

Rikishi younger than everyone above them on the banzuke

Y1e Terunofuji 29.11.1991 M1e Tamawashi 16.11.1984 Sd17w Katsunofuji 04.05.1984 Sd23e Dairaido 17.04.1980 0-0 Sd78e Shoketsu 05.09.1976 0-0 I believe this is the current list, sorry for the crappy formatting -
It could be intended but i don't see how "now" makes for a good shikona...
-
Does he plan to win by taking advantage of his opponent's fears of public spaces?
-
Since Kotonowaka was K1w last basho, he is merely staying the same rank while he's jumped by Wakamotoharu (K2w last basho), whereas putting Hoshoryu ahead of Wakatakakage would have been a demotion for Wakatakakage. That or of course they could have some Onami bias

2 Former Ozeki and 4 Yusho Winners in Juryo at once, has this ever happened? EDIT: This is the first basho with 2 former ozeki in juryo at once, not sure about the yusho winners bit.
-
If Chiyotairyu gets 4 wins this tournament, i'll eat my hat.

I've always wondered who that rather young looking oyakata is... I see him on the shimpan a lot... would that be Matsugane-oyakata?
-
Oh that makes more sense, given the thread. Sorry! I remember seeing one before but i couldn't access it now

There's this wikipedia article if that's what you mean. It's quite informative. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_non-Japanese_sumo_wrestlers

Hmm, I think out of yours Koho seems most likely.. Hakuho seems to prefer short shikona (with the exception of Hokuseiho) Hakushuho is a bit similar to Hakuho without actually being it, so i'm not too fond of it. Denho sounds an awful lot like Enho, but then again, he has a Senho, too. I like the sound and meaning of Ginkoho best, out of yours! Honestly i'd really like to see him take that name on. and while i believe it's unlikely he'd ever give it to another rikishi, he did not receive an ichidai toshiyori so there could technically always be another Hakuho.
