Those are called Haori. I don't know that much about Japanese culture outside of sumo wrestling, but those are usually what the Oyakata and high ranking rikishi use as more traditional formal wear, to my knowledge.

He went in, and now goes out, with Myogiryu...
-
To make matters worse, I've just learned he was a Maegashira himself...
-
Dear god, i completely misunderstood the post... I've never seen either of their fathers and i thought he was celebrating Abi's henka!
-
This man exudes "Abi's dad".
-
And by the looks of it, he's only lost the fat... Very impressive!
-
Well, that's because we are. An unprecedented number of this generation's rikishi had their careers ruined through scandal and/or injury... or at least it seems that way...
-
I've heard a rumour that Kirishima is (unsurprisingly) kyujo, but i haven't found a source to back it up. Anyone else?
-
If being a Takayasu fan is this bad... imagine being Takayasu himself...

https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202404110000240.html This is the only source i've seen so far. But i believe it's credible. The first foreign yokozuna has passed on. Heart failure, apparently.

Oh i know, but iirc Shimanoumi is the most common example to use for this type of scenario. I would favor a banzuke with larger demotions and promotions that work around that, but then again i'm not the one making the banzuke
-
I'm not the biggest fan of the new "status quo" way they've arranged the banzuke recently (trying to keep everyone as close to their previous rank as possible.) Shimanoumi down just two ranks with a 5-10 is outrageous.

According to sumodb there is no Chiyomatsu... Would anyone happen to know who this article is referring to?
-
It's back! I wonder what happened...

I might be jumping to conclusions, but I'm getting an "error 503" screen that looks different from the normal "database is down" screen. It's just plain black text on a white background. (unfortunately I am having trouble uploading a screenshot of it.) Is it gone for good?
-
Is that old website archived anywhere? I've heard of it but i can't remember if i've ever actually read it... I was watching old footage of a tournament from 1999-2000 and wanted to read what people were thinking back then..
-
Pardon my ignorance, but could someone explain the difference between kanjin-zumo and a standard jungyo?
-
Seems like a rather strange decision... has an Ozeki ever changed their name like that before?

sumo jokes/memes is your humor oasis for sumo jokes and memes that you want to tell people.

Onokatsu's appearance on the Kyushu 2023 banzuke doesn't show the high rank marker. It also doesn't show on the banzuke itself. I'll also add that his profile lists his highest rank as "Gyoji"

Loving the shikona Tenshoho, much better than Kiho or Hakuoho.
-
A quick query suggests he is the first. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&form1_rank=J&form1_y=on&sort_basho=2&sort_by=rank (Genbuyama doesn't appear on the next banzuke as he was demoted to Makushita, the DB not having complete data on toriteki pre-1936. He retired in 1932.)

Wow. Less than a year after his Makuuchi yusho, and right after taking the Juryo yusho (that has to be a first, right?) His career was certainly one-of-a-kind, and quite the roller-coaster. It looks almost unrealistic looking back at it. He was fun to watch for his boulder-like ways in the ring, and i'm sure i and many others will miss him.

exYokozuna Orora performs kanreki dohyoiri
sahaven111 replied to Tsuchinoninjin's topic in Ozumo Discussions
Jeez, he's lost so much weight! interesting to see that he's kept the topknot, even this long after retirement. -
Promotion/Demotion and Yūshō Discussion Haru 2023
sahaven111 replied to Seiyashi's topic in Honbasho Talk
That actually makes sense. but here he's lost, and presumably not demoted...
