    Banzuke for Haru 2024

And just a little further back we have the teenagers Satorufuji and Wakaikari who have a combined total of 11 kk in 12 basho.

These days I read the banzuke from the bottom up. Stops me getting over-excited about my prospects and saves the crushing disappointment. It's the hope that kills you...

54 here, I think. Not good but this is likely to be a low-scoring renewal, so should be a safe KK.

Hokuseiho Accused of Bullying - Hakuho Faces Demotion

Belatedly chipping in... I have zero sympathy for Hakuho. If he had more involvement in the day-to-day stuff and actually lived at the stable we might never have got to this point. He needs to prioritise. As for Hokuseiho... well if a big, strong kid starts dicking around and bullying his classmates he needs to be slapped down immediately. Otherwise he thinks he's not doing anything so bad and the problem escalates. Slap your classmate... nothing happens, punch him... nothing happens, superglue his wallet... nothing happens, kick him in the nuts... nothing happens, blast him with a home-made flame-thrower... nothing happens... oh what? I'm fired! How'd that happen???

Hokuseiho Accused of Bullying - Hakuho Faces Demotion

This is the thing that Chris Sumo has been covering for the last month, right?

I moved Meisei ahead of Oho assuming some level of veteran bias and a possibly-baseless assumption that 9-6 is the "sweet spot" which is better than 8-7 but also maybe better than 10-5 or 11-4 coming up from underneath. Well that's me, you, Spiffy and Moti. If we have got this horribly wrong we will at least have some good company on our sinking ship.

Does anyone else have Meisei ahead of Oho or am I way out on a limb?

    Araiwa

If this is not just an error it's a bit of a puzzle. I was wondering if it was a combination of Japan still using the Julian calendar and a super-late Lunar new year. Another possibility is that Japan was using the Emperor's era for the calendar. Meiji 3 would have run from September 1870, which was a leap year to September 1871.

Promotion/Demotion and Yūshō Discussion Hatsu 2024

There would be a pleasing symmetry to that: maku'uchi wrestler with no wins this time would be sharing a rank with a makushita guy with no losses. Quite rare I would imagine. On the questions being discussed it looks to me that Endo gets the last maku'uchi place while Chiyomaru will be the last man in juryo. I don't think that the fact that both men are hugely popular will hurt their cases.

Not kidding. There will be some spectacular over-promotions... Meisei, Hiradoumi, Oho, Tsurugisho, Takanosho etc.

    Kyujo for Hatsu 2024

There were reports leading into the basho (which I think I read on this site) that Hoshoryu was injured and just wanted his kk. He was doing so well that I forgot all about it.

Wonderful, spirited sumo from Shonannoumi today. The poor bloke can hardly generate any forward movement this basho but he produced a brilliant, last-gasp reversal

Agreed, with normal luck he is going to improve a lot. And was his fifth makushita opponent in six days.

22.48% of his defeats by slap down. Crikey! That is a very telling stat. I am sure that a lot of opponents decided "take a step, give him a slap on the back, he will fall over". When he broke into the top division I thought he was a better prospect than Takakeisho, who is the same age and has a similar physique, but it's pretty hard to establish yourself as a top guy if you can't stay on your feet. The change in the tachiai that you spotted may be paying off... but it could just be that he is racking up exactly the kind of score that we might expect from him at M14.

Yes. He is quite distinctive. The only man who can get through all 15 days without opening his eyes.

You mean intai? He doesn't need to announce it right now. I meant as in kyujo, but now I see it had been dealt with on page 1 of the thread.

I don't know about that: it perked up towards the finish but there was some rubbish in mid-card. The worst culprit was Kinbozan, who bounced off Nishikigi, said "sod this for a lark" and hit reverse. What did he expect? Everyone bounces off Nishikigi.

It doesn't work too badly either. In the last 6 basho (including this one) only Kirishima, Hoshoryu, Daieisho, Kotonowaka and Wakamotoharu have more maku'uchi wins.

In a spooky echo of Nagoya 21, Terunofuji beats Kirishima to take the yusho and rides off into the sunset. Kirishima takes up the rope. And the wheel turns.

Apart from Osunaarashi they also have Wakanoho. His pro career was before my time but he is still only 35. Anybody know if the Kamiyama twins are busy at the moment?

  25. The kabu merry-go-round makes my head spin. Might be a very obvious question, but does the new Otowayama stable stay within the Tokitsukaze ichimon?
