  1. Purification related rituals like salt - how much do they go through, anyway? And why is the yobidashi there with an opened white fan just after a win? Is that somehow purification related? (Thanks in advance for considering such a line of enquiry...)

    Ura injured

Thank you, again, for that as well. (*more sad feels*) I appreciate the information net and your contribution to it here. I'll keep my fingers crossed, even knowing what I know and can infer from related fields. I'm just watching my feed now of day 11, with the absences in the makuuchi due to day 10 injuries. I know it's a hard sport, but still it's looking like a bit of a meat grinder at the moment.

    Ura injured

Yatagarasu - thank you for catching this. I'd only just visited the Sumo Kyokai website, and I only could see that he'd been absent from his bout today, but not why. Thanks again.

Have a go at a Haiku!

Oooh, yes! Thank you - I'd been fumbling and not getting what I needed to have. Thanks for the reminder!

    Ura injured

I was lucky enough to get to attend a day in the Kyushu Basho just past, and managed to orient myself quickly enough to realize that I was getting to watch a match with Ura! Happy, happy, happy!!

Have a go at a Haiku!

Good morning from Europe to you, Yamanashi! Each vowel will be one "syllable" - or, a term of art I recently learned, "more" ("moh-ray"). Ta-chi a-i. Of course, if I was being completely strict with "more" rather than syllables, I'd have to make a very harsh rewrite of my latest effort.

Have a go at a Haiku!

Knitting, chatting, food and hot tea all left when we hear, "Tachi-ai"

Have a go at a Haiku!

The basis of play: face-off, advance, clash or turn -- 'til one falls or leaves. (I'm afraid this isn't very lyrical... but I'll try again soon. I really like the notion of sumo as a topic for haiku.)

    Nasalisation in Japanese

My electronic dictionary's pronunciation guide gives multiple instances of the nasalized "g" - I don't quite have a good view on the system of it, though. They also "extend" the writing system from what we're normally taught - representing the nasalized "g" with the same small circle as for turning the h-series into "p" sounds. (Sound FX: me looking into the guts of my keyboard in search of the correct glyph...) Yatta!!! か゚ is the one. Hope this helps!

    Nagoya Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Well, I wouldn't mind seeing it again - "never found his footing" is something I perhaps don't have quite enough experience to have properly judged it. (Unlike, say, the match I've just finished watching, Chiyoshoma vs Kotoeko...which was over nearly before we could see it.)

    Nagoya Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

No matter who you were hoping would win, I rather liked that match on day 10 between Asanoyama and Hokutofuji. I think I even heard the Japanese NHK announcer how you didn't really know before the end who was going to win.

Hot Nagoya? Arena air condition in bad condition..

My trusty-rusty denshi-jisho (electronic dictionary) says that Kushiro City For some wild fun with daily temperature readings, the Japan Meteorological Agency has some very accessible datasets. Kushiro has not been the coolest place in Hokkaido, either... :D

    Sumo and Social Media

Ah well,... darn. Strength to you, and if I had a like to give, I would give it to your activity in promoting O-zumo on WeChat.

Would the China firewall also prevent access to Line? A friend of mine in Japan introduced me to the service, and I see the Sumo Kyokai have a pretty active account there.

    Nagoya Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Day 9 Aw, bless! The NHK broadcast is sending Yoshikaze a sweet "ganbatte!" by rerunning two of his victories from the archives: one over Hakuhō and the other over Harumafuji. *wistful sigh*
