2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

He looked perfectly fine walking back to the dressing room, I'd be very surprised if he did.

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Tomokaze's three wins so far are all via Hatakikomi, actually 7 of his 8 most recent wins are... With his body you'd think he'd do forward sumo more often but no he's just turning into Takekaze but bigger.

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Kaisei won today but his injury is not healing at all, no surprise there as he is still showing up every day aggravating it even more. He is 4-2 but I think the end of the line is close for him.

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

I only translated on the fly what he said and just like you I went to check. I knew Takakeisho was heavier but I expected an even bigger difference because of that quote. The thing is he was not only talking just the weight but also about the impact and power as well. Hokutofuji is lively but lacks raw power sometimes and Takakeisho always hits hard. On that particular topic, I didn't have the time to translate it but Oguruma oyakata also analysed one of Takakeisho's bout (sadly I can't remember if it was the same bout against Hokutofuji today or the one against Tomokaze) and explained why Takakeisho's oshi was much better. He said that Takakeisho's oshi attack consists on powerful strikes with the palms of his hands and with the arms only going forward while the overpowered opponent's oshi strikes were coming from the sides and therefore were far less effective.

Mainoumi analysis of Takakeisho's win against Hokutofuji today "We could see the impact of the weight difference between the two, not only Takakeisho is heavier but his sumo and his strikes are heavy. Hokutofuji was losing the oshi battle so he tried to move around and when he attacked he threw himself at Takakeisho to generate more power but lost his balance"

Confirmed by the Kyokai as well, he owns the Nakamura Kabu so he'll take the name Nakamura

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Lucky winner Abi revealed he thought he had lost and was surprised when he saw a monoii was called. "[A monoii?] why ?" he asked himself "I didn't feel anything [in my hair], I thought I had lost at first. I'm in good shape so I guess luck is my friend this basho" he confessed. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909110000914.html Really bad luck for Kadoban ozeki Tochinoshin who is struggling to get wins so far. He is now 1-3 and in big trouble. "I thought woops I'm touching hair so I pulled my hand away right away though" he said in the changing room. Then he looked at the replay again "Aw ok my fingers are inside the hair..." he said with a sad face. "I couldn't hit well at the tachi ai nor get my grip but I did well to stop his attack and pushed him to the side. It's probably the first time I lose because of an hairpull" he added https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909110000862.html

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Although it looks like Tochinochin won, he grabbed Abi's mage (hair) in the process which is against the rule therefore Abi wins. Basically, Tochinoshin was disqualified for going against the rule (hansoku)

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Man, Kotoyuki had a good tachi ai, did good sumo all the way and literally tried everything he could but still it wasn't enough to beat Enho, the little man is growing !

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

More on day 2 from nikkan. With Hakuho Kyujo from day two, Kakuryu is now the only Yokozuna still in and therefore the prime candidate to get the yusho. He refuses to let the pressure get to him though "I just have to focus everyday. It's not like it's the first time I'm the only yokozuna competing." he commented. On his convincing win against Hokutofuji today after pulling a bit yesterday against Endo. "My body reacted well today, I faced Hokutofuji in training before the basho so I knew what to expect". That picture though... https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909090000632.html Tamawashi is back in form after his bad showing last basho, 2-0 to start and looking good. "If it feels good ? Of course it does ! I want to communicate this joy because it's been so long [since I last performed this well] !" he said with his usual goofy smile on his face. On his bad showing last basho as a sekiwake (5-10 but was 1-10 at some point) "You can throw away that version of me already". Early days yet but Hakuho and Takayasu are out and Tochinoshin is struggling, Tamawashi already has a yusho to his name and will look to snatch his second if Kakuryu and Goeido are not careful. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909090000710.html Asanoyama showed good sumo again on day 2 after his win against Mitakeumi on day 1. He beat injured Ozeki Tochinoshin again to lead 3-1 against him. Tochinoshin likes to train with Asanoyama because he is a powerful migi yotsu specialist just like him. "Attacking forward was the only thing on my mind today. I wanted to repay the Ozeki [for allowing me to train with him and teaching me]" reflected Asonoyama. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909090000769.html

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Enho post win interview "I'm glad I could get that left grip early, my opponent moved just at the right moment for me to execute the throw" Some news on veteran Toyonoshima (0-2 so far), he said he hurt his right foot just near the achilles just before the basho and that the pain is bothering him. "When I climb on the dohyo I don't think about it at all, but as soon as I am on the dohyo no matter what I do I can't help but think about it. It's not good to fight scared, I need to start enjoying sumo a bit more when I'm fighting" he declared.

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Asanoyama had a great tachi ai, once he had that mae-mawashi grip it was all other for Mitakeumi who even tried to pull which only made things worse. For the first time it looks like Mita was training seriously during the tour so I was hoping he'd reach double digit this time especially with the top guys beeing shaky lately but right from the first day he disappoints again. There's still 14 days to go so let's hope he can bounce back... Even his diet was a failure he's listed at 177 kg now up a couple kilos...

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Hakuho posted two short videos of his feet covered with dirt and him slowly moving his toes on his instagram story yesterday. No caption nothing but his big toe was heavily tapped, I wonder if it's just precaution because of all the problems and injuries he had or if he was hinting that the toe is bothering him again... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Not a convincing win for Takakeisho but it's to be expected given how rusty he is, he lacks his usual impact and power right now but he moved his legs well and quickly which is encouraging.

    Kaisei injury update

He is not japanese and not that popular so I don't think any japanese journalist care enough to write a piece on him sadly, besides he is down to Juryo now which diminishes even more the chance of getting any sort of coverage about him. I guess we'll have to wait for the torikumi of the first two days to see if he is in and watch his bouts to see how well he is if he is in...

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2019

Kadoban ozeki Tochinoshin was at the Dewanoumi stable joint training session today and faced Sekiwake Mitakeumi as well as heyamates Aoyama and Tochiozan for 12 bouts and finished 6-6. "I can't move forward well yet. I can use some power in my right leg at the tachi-ai but my legs don't follow after that. My left shoulder is in much better shape though, I can now use my left arm well. Overall I am in better shape. It's impossible to be completely healed of everything right away but I'm getting there slowly" he commented. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909040000307.html

    New Takanofuji Scandal

A confused and sad looking Takagenji at the training session today For obvious reasons Takanofuji was not training today but his twin Takagenji was and talked to the journalists after the session. Takagenji apparently was in tears when he heard what his brother had done and urged him to reflect on his actions. "I talked to him yesterday morning, yesterday evening and talked to him two days ago as well. Our first master (ex Takanohana) did his best to raise us and watch over us, what the hell are you doing ? I told him. I am very sad, frustrated and I feel terrible" confessed Takagenji. The article even reports a conversation that happened between the twins. Takagenji: "What the hell are you doing ?" Takanofuji:" until now I acted like you were the brat of the two but it turns out you were the more mature all along" Takagenji: "It's way to late to realize that" And the two brothers cried together. Takagenji is even more heartbroken because he remembers that their former master Takanohana was demoted to the lowest rank in the hierarchy in order to protect his brother the first time he messed up and thinks Takanofuji broke the faith his master had in him. "We are more than regular brothers ,we are twins. I know I'll probably be judged too, people will probably say 'his twin was violent so he'll probably be violent too' but I am different. [...] To me there's only sumo and I have faith, I want my brother to have that same faith. If somehow he is not expelled, I'll watch him closely. I want him to redeem himself. No matter what the reason violence is violence. I would like to start again from zero with him" https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909040000296.html

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2019

The media's focus temporarily shifted (for the wrong reasons) towards his heya-mate Takanofuji , but Sekiwake Takakeisho's continued his preparation ahead of the basho and trained with sekitori opposition again today. With only a few days remaining until sunday it's a race against the clock for him to get as fit as he can. He attended the nishinoseki ichimon rengo-geiko at the nishonoseki stable in Chiba and faced the likes of Ichinojo and Ryuden (he probably faced Onosho as well- it looks like it's him in that second picture) for five bouts and was 2-3. The number of bouts and the record were not great but at least he is trying to face jo-i guys. " The way he went under again to attack after hitting was great. That's his brand of sumo right there. Getting his body back in shape to achieve that is a success for him" analyzed his oyakata. My take is that his knee is pretty much healed now but he is still rusty and out of shape. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909030000585.html

    New Takanofuji Scandal

What an idiot, he was very close to make it to makuuchi and now probably ended his career... The article says that he'll be kyujo this basho and that the kyujo decision is not a punishment from the Kyokai ( the compliance committee is yet to examine his case) but from his oyakata. The tsukebito is a jonidan.
