Well, if they wanted to clear out the field for the Japanese Yokozuna, they couldn't have done a better job. IMHO, the problem is that there are three members of Sanyaku who have already won a Basho, and others who are thinking this is their Golden Ticket. Kisenosato looked astonishingly good last time, but not yusho-good.

See the autumn bite. Trees and flowers know; they hide, counting days 'till Spring.

A month of boredom, Then the banzuke comes out ... "Let's go, Honbasho!"
-
Classic rookie mistake: "McCartney-san, did you bring in any drugs to sell?" "No, personal use only."
-
Also rookie yobidashi Kenta got the chance to call out names for the whole day. Good practice!

I'm at a loss. This is either deeply disturbing, or the funniest damn thing I've seen in a month.

It's a Samoan thing, you wouldn't understand. -
A wallet will have identification in it; the authorities can use this to contact the person who lost it. A 5 dollar (euro, pound, zloty) bill isn't worth fingerprinting to track down the damaged party.

Sumo articles by journalists who are Forum members/or not

A nice little article with some interesting background on Takayasu. Incidentally, that headline in a US magazine would get the writer and editor fired and banished from journalism. Strange world. -
New measures announced to combat violence

I couldn't agree more about the possibility that #6 will forbid cross-heya relationships. Maybe the point is lost in the translation, but it comes across like a parent telling their children not to get friendly with other families -- often this is a red flag for abusive parenting. I hope the reading of #6 is very, very narrowly applied. -
"Hakuho injured-" (This would make a great haiku!) "Kyushu crisis looms"

1) Long time no post, YBF. 2) I had hoped that, by inspired serendipity, the German term would have the letters -hak- in it.

So, won't this lead to a real dilemma for everyone? What if he starts the basho and goes kyujo after, say, 6 days because of a legitimate injury. Can he perform the dohyo-iri afterward? If not, must he stay in and become a kinboshi machine so that he's eligible for the ceremony?

They all did. Worth its weight in gold just to hear Alex Trebeck pronounce gaburi-yori and uwate-dashinage.

Cream (or more likely half & half) is added to make it ... er ... creamy! My favorite commercial cole slaw is from Kentucky Fried Chicken, which has milk products. We don't worry about spoiling, though; some smart folks from up North sold us some of them refrigemelator thingies, and that keeps 'em nice and cold.

Hard to get the whole story when it's in another language, but to me the takeaway is: 1) Keep an eye on those Mongolians. 2) Have even less fraternization between heya. Most of the violence seems to be meted out within the heya. So ... ?

When I first saw his picture and then watched videos of him (as oyakata) he reminded me of the comic actor Hiromasa Taguchi (the fat dance student in Shall We Dance). Furiwake seems able to take off the hinkaku-coat and show you his real character now and again. -

Very stylish design-wise, with the symmetric use of chest hair ...

Sumo program announcements (pics and vids)

I have sleep apnea; being overweight is a contributing factor. It is an insidious condition: breathing stops every 30-60 seconds all night, waking up exhausted and in a cold sweat, falling asleep during the day for "no reason." I had a minor knee problem that became debilitating because it was not healing while I slept. Now I use a CPAP religiously. Rikishi probably wouldn't last a year with undiagnosed apnea. -
Well, this will savor the memory, but destroy the respect ... Guess the rikishi: There once was a man from Osaka, Who’s too young to have wrestled with Waka. Since he rose to Ozeki, His O-zumo’s been shaky, But he’s still there so stop with the Talk-a.

Is that a mustache-chin whisker combination I see in one of his sumo matches? Didn't know that was allowed.

Well, as they say, "You can't teach height." Even a kid who is hefty, and more than 184 cm (~6 ft), will think about other sports -- even basketball. That probably means the grey line won't go up much in the future.
