Yeah, that must be it. I haven't checked those numbers for other basho, it just stood out this time. Guess I expected the sport featuring "Darwin matches" would regress a little more strongly toward the mean.

There must be something significant to the fact that the KK % for each ichimon was less than 50, but I can't figure out what it is.

The knee brace tells it all.

I didn't see the family resemblance between Hoshoryu and his uncle when he started in 2017, but putting on some weight (and aging from 18 to 21) has made a difference. -

etc., etc., etc. I'm pitching a new Japanese monster movie; due to an accident at the Univ. of Tokyo Earthquake Research Institute, all 42 makuuchi simultaneously "do their own sumo" for one day. What do we call it? I'm kicking around the following titles: "Destroy All Sekitori", "Godzilla vs. Shodai", "Johnny Sumo and his Giant Yokozuna" Any other ideas? -

I'll bet Shodai's case has gobsmacked the NSK a little. They're used to his inconsistency, so probably didn't keep close track. Now maybe they have to think about it. -

Good idea; maybe a separate thread if it takes off. So ... Rikishi of July Basho: "The Boys of Summer" Hakuho: "Holding Back the Years" Ishiura: "Stepping Out" Daieisho: "Take On Me" Terunofuji: "Driver's Seat" Enho: "St. Enho's Fire" Abi: "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" Daikisho: "Hey Nineteen" Kaisei's aite: "I Feel the Earth Move" Terutsuyoshi: "If You Could Read My Mind" Tochinoshin: "Midnight Train to Georgia" -
I did not know about him. Based upon the db: when he's on, holy crap! Then injured and in free fall on the banzuke. His picture has shoulder tape. Is that the problem?

The great thing about both of those milestones is he doesn't have to win anything. Heck, he doesn't even have to show up for some of them. -

[Thought I replied already; maybe didn't send?] If Hakuho makes it to mid-2021, he'll have 100 basho as Makuuchi, 80 as Yokozuna. Wonder if he's thinking about that? -
[Wrong quote! How embarassing.] Akiseyama heading south again. Sorry to see him fall; a unique character in the ring. I just happened across his first meeting with Takanoyama: appropriate for COVID times, a "hands-free" tachiai (2011 7 day 6).

There are many others. We just don't see them. They would laugh at our presumption, but that is not their way.

Sorry about the format of the above; early is 2015 11 - 2017 1, when he made it up to K; late is after, when established in sanyaku. Early, he had a tendency to sag in the middle, late he's better in the first half than the second. -

It goes back at least to the Edo period, and appears to have its roots in Shinto worship ...

Ah, you fell for the classic blunder: "Never go against a Sicilian when kadoban is on the line."

I must admit I perked up on days 5 and 6 when Toch pulled a tsukiotoshi and uwatenage back-to-back; good to try something unexpected. But no way to try an arm throw when locked up with Terunofuji! -
