  3. I am travelling at the moment, and if the last few days are any indication I will not be able to run Break The Curse this time around. If anyone is able and willing to run the game in my stead then please let me know. I'd be very grateful and post the rules. The entry is now via the Forum again. If no-one is able to run the game then that's not a problem, we'll just not run the game this time around.
  4. Ok. Thanks. PM me if you haven't got cold feet and we can work something out.

    Strength of Yūshō

As you point out, rank should make a difference. An opponent who ends up with a score of 10-5 from M14 is probably not at the same difficulty-level as an opponent who scores 10-5 as an Ozeki. Furthermore, by doing really well a rikishi would lower their SOS. Let's say in a basho that the Jun-Yusho line was 12-3 when the yusho was 15-0. Instead of going zensho, the yusho winner could have gone 12-3 with a playoff win instead. That's three more wins for our winner with a zensho, but three more losses for his opponents (and consequently a lower SOS for our yusho winner). Given that you are disregarding rank (reasonable, since a highly injured Ozeki or Yokozuna may not be the strongest opponent one would have to face), then I would suggest a slight modification. Give something like 2pt for a win, 1pt for beating rikishi with double digits and 1pt for beating a rikishi with at least 13 wins. So a yusho winner who beat a 14-1 rikishi would score 4pts for that victory (win + double-digits + at least 13 wins). You could also subtract 1pt for every time our yusho winner beat a rikishi who had double-digit losses, or similar. So beating a 5-10 rikishi would net you 1 point instead of 2.

  9. Welcome to Break The Curse (The Nigate Game) It's an easy game to play, but you have to pick wisely. In this daily game, you have to choose three Makuuchi bouts where you think a rikishi with a losing head-to-head record against his opponent will win. Post you guesses either here with spoiler tags or PM me on this forum. Rules 1) Every day, choose three Makuuchi bouts listed for that same day. The bouts must follow this form: A) The first bout must contain a rikishi from Sanyaku (any bout with a Y/O/S/K can be chosen). B) The second bout must contain a rikishi ranked M1 through M8. C) The third bout must contain a rikishi ranked M9 or lower. A lower ranked Makuuchi rikishi against a Juryo rikishi can be chosen. 2) Some bouts will fit in multiple categories (e.g. a Y vs M1 bout can be chosen for the first or second bout). However, you may not choose the same bout twice (or more). If you do, the second (or third) instance of the bout will score you 0 points. 3) Any bouts that do not fit the criteria will not score points. 4) You will score points if the rikishi with the losing record in head-to-head wins. E.g. if RIKISHI A has a 30-20 winning record over RIKISHI B and RIKISHI B wins, then you score points. If RIKISHI A wins, then you score 0 points. 5) The number of points you score is calculated by the difference in head-to-head score prior to the bout. E.g. if RIKISHI A has a 30-20 winning record over RIKISHI B and RIKISHI B wins, then you score 30-20=10 points. These points are called base points. 6) When determining points, any previous bouts between the two rikishi that were in a playoff or decided by fusen do not count. I'll be using the head-to-head stats from the database, so if it gives a head-to-head of 5[-1]-8[+1], then that will be used as a 4-8 record in the calculations. 7) Fusen: If your rikishi wins by fusen, then you get half of all points (including the bonus points in rule 9) rounded up to the nearest integer. 8) The Kotoshogiku Rule. This rule has been named in honour of Kotoshogiku's extremely lopsided head-to-head result with Hakuho. The maximum number of base points on any match-up is 20. If RIKISHI A has a head-to-head winning record of 50-5 over RIKISHI B then the base points will be 20, not 45. 9) In addition to the points given as described above there will be an additional 3 points for picking a winning rikishi. This should make some of the lower scoring but low risk bouts more attractive to pick. 10) For any day, due to timezones, it may be that I cannot get to posting the points scores until well after the torikumi is out. You may choose to wait for me or calculate them yourselves. 11) Promotion Rules for Ozeki 33 wins over last three basho of which last two in Sanyaku. All those bahso must have a winning record. 30 wins over last three basho of which last two in Sanyaku. All those bahso must have a winning record. AND a Yusho in those three. 2 Yusho over the last three basho (last two basho in Sanyaku) or a Yusho/Jun-Yusho back-to-back combination (in Sanyaku) 12) Entry deadline is start of Juryo Winning The winner is the one with the most points and the end of the basho. The tiebreaker is decided by the bonus points system. The entry form is an anonymous survey that I post links to here.

Congratulations to @Gurowake on the win. Good call on Day 4 (even if I'm slightly miffed that they changed their ususal method of not putting the m3's together, and then went ahead and did it for the m2's on day 6 and the m8''s on day 8) In case anyone is wondering: M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M9, M10, M11, M12, M13, M14, etc.

  24. One of the Yokozuna privileges is not to have to face lower-rankers who are in contention unless you have to. They've sort of shifted a little bit on that recently, but it wouldn't surprise me if they avoided that match-up on Day 15. If Sadanoumi is one win ahead of Terunofuji then I'd expect them to fight an they may decide that Sadanoumi gaining the yusho without fighting the Yokozuna would be undesirable and do the match-up anyway.
