    Ikioi retires

Just look at the Izutsu-situation. An opportunity to take over one, might come quicker, than we imagine.

    Ikioi retires

Because, someday, he'll be head of his own heya. And a shisho "needs" an okamisan. Regarding this, Japan is a bit backwards. I'm 100% positive, an okamisan who embraces the role, is an advantage for any heya. Especially when it comes down to be a second mother for the younglings. But apart from that and the traditional representation, a male manager can do the job, too. EDIT: And regarding that broken off engagement...i'm sure the silky voiced devil won't stay single for a long time...

    Nagoya Basho 2021

The Lizard People, in all their wisdom, decided zu promote Ichiyamamoto from J8 to makuuchi. With a 10-5. Why? Just why? Too much biru? *sigh* I won't redo the poll. You can leave a comment, but it won't have any impact und the outcome.

    Banzuke for Nagoya 2021

Ichiyamamoto? Really? How high were they? Should have waited with the poll...

    Nagoya Basho 2021

Regarding the circumstances, their former success and their standing with the fans, the Ura/Abi polls are "specials".
  6. Not quite.

    The English commentators- views

And that's all she wrote. I only can subscribe that. Knowledge, voice, fine humor, it's hard to beat Murray.
  8. Yes, but there are at least traces of substances, you just can't avoid in any undergarment. *cough*dingleberries*cough*

Preparations of the masses- Nagoya 2021

Was der Bauer nicht kennt, frisst er nicht. What the peasant doesn't know, he doesn't eat.

    Asahisho retires

That's what i call proper HEAVY Metal.

That's the article i was looking for, thanks. I wish they would invest in some buckets of paint and some plaster for the corridors. They look nasty.

No. Just no. And if, they could stay in the tunnels, just round the corner. That's a 10s jog to the dohyo.

And the Royal in Germany. But i prefer the TS to the Cheese. And of course, both AND the Big Mac lose to the Whopper and the Big King. Why eat with the Clown, when you can dine with the King? Like @RabidJohn i instantly had to think of Super Size Me. But there's some serious cricism. There are even more scientific test, which show SSM to be separated from the truth. So i wouldn't read too much into that. And he doesn't say he eats ONLY McD.

On the one hand, this shouldn't be about affordability. On the other hand, as far as i remember, the NSK can't afford s**t. Wasn't there a thread, showing the NHK basically is broke and can survive only through subventions?
  15. The banzuke isn't just a computer print. It's handwritten by highly trained gyoji. This is a delicate, time consuming process. If they mess it up, there's no liquid paper, they have to do it again. They won't rewrite it, after they are finally done with it. That's one answer to your question. Another answer could probably be "tradition". There is a thread regarding banzuke writing on this forum, but i can't find it, maybe someone else can help.
  16. Is there a rule it has to be monochrome? Can't wait for the day, one of the guys goes full plaid.

    Preparations of the Y/Os - Nagoya 2021

The new version of the Vivaldi browser has a built in translator. I tried it on the Sankei article regarding this training session. It translated Takarafuji to "treasure Fuji", or "Schatz Fuji" in German. But in German "mein Schatz" has two meanings: "My treasure" and "my precious". I will never look at Takarafuji the same... Back to serious. I don't like on-dohyo-Terunofuji, but getting that tsuna should secure him a spot in the all-time Top 10 of awesome sumo achievements, no matter if Hakuho shows up.

    Natsu Basho 2021

Disclaimer/introduction for new players The Wall: If a sumotori gets his first makekoshi (MK = losing record) in that respective division, it's called "hitting the wall" (KK = winning record, means missing the wall, which is a good thing). Since there are no first-time promotees to juryo or makuuchi and everybody hit the wall last basho, we'll have only the Ura-special. Promotion/demotion/kadoban/intai: Takakeisho got his KK, so he preserved his rank. Shodai on the other hand is kadoban again. It's now the 2nd time he is kadoban and he will be demoted to Sekiwake in case of an MK. Guess the colour of the giant macaron: One of the prices for the yusho winner is a giant fake macaron (as placeholder for a load of real, normal sized macarons from one of the best P√Ętisseries in Paris). The colour varies and it has become a popular game to guess it.

    YDC convenes after Natsu 2021

At least this doesn't sound to me, as if they wanted Asanoyama out of sumo.
  21. I quit Facebook 10 years ago, because it was toxic. I have a twitter account, but it mainly exists to like posts of George Takei, not to post myself and regarding this forum... Making your way in the world today Takes everything you've got Taking a break from all your worries Sure would help a lot Wouldn't you like to get away? All those nights when you've got no lights The check is in the mail And your little angel Hung the cat up by it's tail And your third fiance didn't show Sometimes you wanna go Where everybody knows your name And they're always glad you came You wanna be where you can see (ah-ah) Our troubles are all the same (ah-ah) You wanna be where everybody knows your name Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead The morning's looking bright (the morning's looking bright) And your shrink ran off to Europe And didn't even write And your husband wants to be a girl Be glad there's one place in the world Where everybody knows your name And they're always glad you came You wanna go where people know People are all the same You wanna go where everybody knows your name Where everybody knows your name (where everybody knows your name) And they're always glad you came Where everybody knows your name (where everybody knows your name) And they're always glad you came Where everybody knows your name (where everybody knows your name) And they're always glad you came Where everybody knows your name (where everybody knows your name) With the drama, but without the booze. Love you guys and gals.
  22. This reminds me, how lucky german speakers are. The pronounciation is pretty similar. Hakuho is Hakuho. The biggest difference (i can think of) to japanese is the "ei", which is "ay", or "eye" in german, not "ey". I think the "lost vocals"* like in A-mi-nish-ki, rather than A-mi-ni-shi-ki apply to all non japanese. And of course someone not fimiliar to sumo would say ha-KU-ho, instead of HA-ku-ho. *I think there are rules, one can follow. Aminishiki and Nishikigi both have "ishi-ki", which is "ish-ki", so i got that going for me. Who can tell me more?

    Ryuden Scandal

The punishment is for breaking the covid rules. The affair should only be relevant, if they some day have to decide about his yokozuna-promotion and if he has the hinkaku for that. Is what he did a nice thing? No. But the NSK is neither the catholic church, nor Megadeth.

    Endou story

Wasn't Endo at one point the "next japanese Ozeki hope"?
  25. Benihana

    Trivia bits

Endo is the first M8 having faced 3 Ozeki in a single basho. He's not the record holder for lowest Maegashira to do so. M9w Kotomitsuki 11/2000 (13-15), facing Dejima, Miyabiyama and Musojama, defeating all. -> lowest on consecutive days, lowest to defeat all. M9w Hananokuni 08/1988 (11, 12, 14), lost to Hokutenyo and Asashio, but defeated Konishiki. M9w Dewanohana 01/1985 (10-12), defeated Kotokaze, lost to Asashio and Hokutenyo. M10w Tatekabuto 05/1941 (1, 3, 4), lost to Akinoumi, Maedayama and Itsutsushima. M10w Matsuragata 01/1941 (1, 3, 7), defeated Itsutsushima and Maedayama, lost to Akinoumi. M12w Sadogashima 01/1941 (1, 4, 8), defeated Itsutsushima, lost to Maedayama and Akinoumi. M14e Fukunohana 11/1972 (11, 12, 14), defeated Wajima, lost Kiyokuni and Kotozakura. The basho of the WWII-phase saw many low ranked Maegashira paired with Ozeki. For Akinoumi and Itsutsushima it seems rational, because their Dewanoumi-beya had 20 sekitori in makuuchi. Haguroyama (Tasunami / 4) and Maedayama (Takasago / 1) had much less intra-beya competition, but had to fight many low ranked M, too. Was there an intra-ichimon ban on bouts? And i don't even want to speculate about the schedule these days.
