"If my body allows me to..., I will..."

I do not remember too many Yokozuna (voluntarily) retiring when they still can compete for the yusho. With the YDC probably placated for the time being, he can take two basho off, come back to restore order, and wait until a successor emerges...

Would a Wikipedia-entry like "Only injuries prevented him of setting a new record for number of times being kadoban ?" be too much of an oxymoron ?
-
At least we have seen the last of Takakeisho as Ozeki, this time he will not be coming back
-
With all due respect for Abi and his ability, I just cannot bring myself to root for him. The simple reason is his "brand" of nodowa. It is fine with me to use that technique to bring your opponent into an upright position, but using it as (pseudo-) punch almost like what you get tought in the military - no. Same for kachiage, btw. Just my humble opinion.

Is it too early to speak about an "Ozeki curse" ? Injuries, suspension, loss off form...not exactly best crop since 2017, Takakeisho excluded. Or am I biased ?

Hokuseiho Out- Hakuho Demoted - Miyagino-beya Closing

Wow. Missed a few months. I can imagine how seven-year Cicadas would feel. You vanish in 2016 and... -
I will never forget his expression after his loss to Ura. A mixture of disbelief and embarrassment.

Those many head collisions at the tachiai seem beginning to show.
-
Sure I know it. I have just never heard it in such a context. Totally misplaced, sorry.

Jesus Christ and all Saints - what a warped analogy !
-
The only thing that means is he will need a second yusho to be promoted. Which he will not get.

It must have been a long time since none of the Chiyo gang was in Makuuchi.

Perhaps his streak is keeping him in ?
-
Ugh. That coconut crack tachiai sapped Takayasu of all his strength.
-
He suffered that injury on day 3 and all his subsequent opponents went after his jaw until him going kyujo on day 9. Though understandable, watching this remains one my low points since I started following sumo.
-
Kotonowaka does not ozeki sumo. Not a single one-minute standoff followed by a uwatenage win in his entire career. I am sure Satodagake views him as a failure and disgrace to the shikona.

It´s interesting how the perception of Goeido has changed over the years. After all, as those who were around then might remember, the term Ozekiwake was coined here for him, for supposedly being better than Sekiwake, but not performing to Ozeki standards.
-
Well, there is precedent...
-
I am wondering if Hoshoryu will change his shikona.
-
A Ozeki going kyujo twice ? I don´t think that will happen.

Seems like I have written off Tamawashi too early...he got his second, ah, twenty second wind.

Oh the days...Big Mac was far more original and entertaining. The imagination of him going after ther gyoji ("You can´t be serios !") made me laugh. Thanks for that, made my day !

Hi Morty, I didn´t want to deviate from the basho thread further, but regarding Teddy Ballgame, it´s not that he didn´t play ball for three years. For instance, in 1945 he played in an eight team Navy League at Pearl Harbour, that included many of the best players of his era, e.g. Joe D and Stan Musial.
Great discussion, tho, thanks !
Kind regards, Roland

Jumping up to buy time when the opponent is falling is done all the, well, time. I don´t get this one. But they have called stranger things.
