2019 Kyushu Basho Discussion (spoiler alert)
Gospodin replied to robnplunder's topic in Honbasho Talk
That´s entirely possible. Aoiyama is not quick enough to keep Enho in front of him for long. -

Well, his father always took his time, ending his one-minute standoffs with his beautiful left uwatenage -

Maybe Tsurugisho and Sadanoumi aren´t the most adept at handling harite. But looking at their reactions after their bouts, Shohozan seems to have added some horsepower to his slaps. -

Looked like it completely surprised him, almost comical. Btw: two kachiage, one harite, it seems Hakuho decided to show the YDC what he thinks of them.. -

Looked like sort of ring rust - hopefully. -

In my opinion the opponents he manages to beat will play into it stronger than usual. He has a single-digit record and scored 12-3 in a tournament with heavily depleted Sanyaku ranks (not his fault, but...). I can imagine that 12 wins won´t be enough of he loses against Hakuho and two ozeki. -

Uchigake - a nice kimarite for Hoshoryu´s first win as sekitori. -
He has zero chances of getting back into sumo. It wouldn´t surprise me if the kyokai would agree to a settlement, for the sake of avoiding prolonged, bad publicity.

A simple-minded question to those who have knowledge about hazing, bullying, etc in heyas: regardless of the severity of things that happen, how much of the „predator‘s“ attitude makes a difference ? If the impression is, he puts others down to elevate his own ego versus he genuinely (not rightfully) believes punishment is due to „assist“ them in becoming better ? Is that a factor ?

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)
Gospodin replied to code_number3's topic in Honbasho Talk
He will be fine in makuuchi, but he does not have the raw tools of his uncle - that lightning-quick anticipation and speed that set Asashoryu apart in the first half of his career. -

That indeed looked conspicuous, like he managed to deceive the gyoji -swinging his right hand forward as if he was brushing the ground. -

He still wants to honor his mentor -
The way he sent his opponent off the dohyo with one two-handed thrust a few days ago makes me wonder if changing to oshi sumo would extend his career. Could he do that switch ?

It would be great if the fading old guard would be more a part of that open field instead of the almost constant absence of about half of them. -
With going kyujo on day five, for how many consecutive days did your streak last ?

Takanofuji has had tsukebitos for a total of about 8 months on three different occasions. He punched one in the first two months, and again acted violently the third time up in Juryo. The guy is either a complete moron or he simply cannot deal with the pressure and attention that comes along with being a sekitori. In any case, the kyokai should set an example and dismiss him. Also, I would love to know how Takanohana currently feels.

I am more worried whether Enho makes it through the basho without incurring a major injury. As for his record, I expect a makekoshi, like 6-9. They started to figure him out. (Fortran...impossible to eradicate, particularly in nature sciences)
-
Tochiazuma. Very versatile, one of the very few who could do something against Asashoryu in his prime.
-
In all his bouts Terunofuji looked really slow, and he got all his wins using brute force from his upper body. That´s not going to pan out in high-Makushita.

Bad quality, but... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCOHOhLisEI

You or me would not be quick enough to step aside before being hit. Also, there are/were other rikishi with explosive tachiais who were at least as much in danger of falling for a henka as Kotoshogiku is. Remember Dejima, for instance ?
-
I am not familiar with the intricacies of the determination of kimarite, but to me it did not look like a nage at all, more of a kind of twist-down. But if, I agree it should be kubinage.
-
Having had the pleasure to watch Aminishiki in his prime years, I remember regularly going crazy watching him beat ozeki by the score, giving the yokozuna a tough bout most of the time an then losing to much less-talented rikishi than him. As much as I will miss him, I will always wonder what might have been if he would have been more consistent when ranked in lower sanyaku.
-
Not sure if I am overthinking here, but maybe Takayasu has in mind that going kyujo tomorrow could impact the outcome of the basho - giving Hakuho a fusen win while Kakuryu has to fight another opponent...
-
Not sure about his other bouts, but that slap immediately followed by getting Hakuho´s shoulder rammed into his chin would have made almost everybody losing his balance.
