    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Yep. Gonna be awfully strange not having him, he's been a fixture as long as I've been watching regular coverage. Fare thee well, Goeido.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Well, that sure did happen. Congratulations to Tokushoryu for this bright spot on his career. Whatever else happens, no one can take this away from him. This is a Rocky II moment. We saw a lot of cool stuff today, really, but it's all overshadowed by the yusho. And people said this would be a 12-3 basho. I ever heard people saying it would be 11-4! So, the next time someone tells you something is impossible, remember this and take it to heart: anything can happen in sumo. (Special props to Ikioi for turning around that atrocious start. That was a mighty achievement in its own right.)

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

The 33 wins in 3 basho thing is a guideline, not a hard rule (as shown quite emphatically in Takakeisho's ozeki run, and ozeki have been promoted with fewer than 33 wins in the past). That said, I don't see why they would promote him this time. He has had matches this basho where he looked like an ozeki, but he has had some where he looked rather bad.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

So, that happened. Wanted to pop on and compliment Hokutofuji's footwork this basho. Fancy s*** doesn't mean anything if you don't have the basics to support it. Hokutofuji is looking more like the rikishi we knew he could be.

I agree wholeheartedly. I was floored by his ferociousness. Where was that Takayasu before?

Enho just added another finish to his highlight reel.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Tokushoryu and Shodai still tied for the lead. God, that is surreal. I haven't been posting much because what could I possibly say about such a wild honbasho? Enho likely to kachi-koshi while effectively a joi-jin. wtf At least Terunofuji is bulldozing his way through juryo. That's how it ought to be.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Some crazy stuff. I knew Shodai had good skills but I didn't realize he was that strong. That was serious power move. If he makes me eat my words by taking this yusho, I'll take them gladly. Could it be he's turned over a new leaf? Also, could not believe Tochinoshin pulled that off. Asanoyama seems distracted. And did anyone expect to see Mitakeumi beat Endo with a swing-down of all things? This basho is Looney Tunes off the wall.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Amateurish mistake by Takakeisho at the edge, and he paid the price. Well, he is still quite young. Lots of fun matches today, and the tournament is still as madcap as it was before. Cheers.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

He'll pull out every trick in the book to try and make it. Definitely an uphill battle and an unlikely proposition, but crazier things have happened.

But Enho is just a fluke, right? lol

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

And that, beautiful fans, is vintage Terunofuji. I don't think his knees will hold up to it like they used to do, but watching that was like watching Godzilla get hit by lightning. You know the beast is awake now.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

People were shocked at Goeido's win on the livestream and it's like, "Uh, you know this is what he does when his rank is on the line, right?" Good win, though. Hard fought. Terunofuji still getting it done in juryo, despite the fierce determination of his opponent. Chyonokuni way down in makushita has a slobber-knocker, too. I'd like to see him as a sekitori again, he's really entertaining when he's fired up. Wide open yusho now, though of course the field of contention will narrow as the days pass. Takakeisho is the man to beat, IMO. Endo is a dark horse. I never thought Shodai was a serious prospect to take it this basho.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

As I've mentioned, Takakeisho's lateral movement is a big part of his effectiveness. Second time this basho he's pulled that sidestep at the bales and won from it. Where the hell was that version of Goeido before? Shodai has a lot of potential, but I do not think he has the mental toughness to keep this streak alive to the end. We already know Takakeisho can perform under pressure, so he's my current pick. However, given how wild things has been, it really is up in the air. There's a lot of honbasho left and anything can happen in sumo.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

I do think he was caught off guard. Abi came out in honey badger mode and Asanoyama didn't know what hit him until he was already outside the bales.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

I can't believe it's only day 4, this basho feels like it's been a month long already. I guess that's gonna be Kakuryu kyujo now. Once Hakuho lost to Myogiryu I figured it would be either Takakeisho or Asanoyama to take the cup. Now I don't know. Crazy basho like this are upside-down land where anything can happen. Terutsuyoshi yusho? Sure, why not. Anything goes in upside-down land! Ok, that was hyperbole, but still. Crazy.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Still very satisfied with what I'm seeing from Terunofuji down in juryo. He keeps this up and he'll be back in makuuchi in no time. Might even take the juryo championship along the way.

That is certainly true, but if he's posting losses against the appetizers it does not bode well for the tougher matches ahead.

What can I even say but, "Guess who's not winning the cup this basho?"

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Oh, man, today was worth a watch for Hakuho's angry face alone. Man, was he ever pissed. Endo better watch himself next time they meet, Hakuho isn't gonna let that slide... This has been an unusually heated basho thus far. Things may settle into a predictable rhythm later, but then again, maybe not. Terunofuji wasn't as overwhelming today down in juryo, but he still looked pretty good. I'm hopeful for his return to makuuchi. Never realized how much I liked the guy until we suddenly didn't have him anymore. I don't wanna say Takayasu won't manage ten, but he really doesn't look like he's gonna pull it off. And that's a shame if so, but I'll keep cheering him regardless. Mitakeumi managed to get out of that? o.o; Wow. Things not looking so hot for Goeido... Asanoyama continues to impress. I think he'll make ozeki, maybe not as fast as he'd like, but eventually.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Asanoyama came out so fast and fierce that he really looked like an ozeki. Takakeisho looked strong, too. That Tochinoshin is resorting to such tactics on day one, but still losing, is not a good sign. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the guy but it may be that the end is near. I'm not too terribly worried for Takayasu, at least not yet. Tamawashi is the sort of guy who can blow most anyone off the dohyo on a good day. It's kind of his thing. We'll see if Takayasu can rally tomorrow against Okinoumi.

Enho was amazing. That was an awesome match, I can't wait to watch it again. Props to him.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Terunofuji rocked that win. Dude looked completely clueless. That gives me hope for the prospects of a return to makuuchi. Keep chugging along, big guy. We're cheering for you.

2019 Kyushu Basho Discussion (spoiler alert)

I was up late enough last night to live stream those lower-division playoffs, which was entertaining, but I had to sleep, so I didn't get to makuuchi until I woke up. Well. For a basho that started out crazy, it had kind of an anti-climactic end, at least in makuuchi. But we had some good stuff, like Enho's surprise kachi-koshi. One nice thing about sumo is there are so many participants, and so many permutations of match-ups, that you're bound to see something that floats your boat. Some basho are more entertaining than others, but I never walk away feeling like I should have watched something else. Sumo remains awesome. And so I bid you all adieu. 'Til next time.
