    A Million?

We're definitely never in a million (heh) years get to the bottom of this, but fooling around YouTube I found this the other night. No less than three torinaoshi in a row, and all in the same fashion. Kirishima v Mitoizumi, May 1988.

    Natsu basho 2021

Hokutofuji's might be the highest quality 1-6 start I've seen. He looks very strong.
  6. Very interesting belief. I believe that dividing people into 15-year demographic cohorts and calling them "generations" as if the average parents have their first child at the age of 15 helps with very little and leads to dreary 4000-word articles essentially about the passage of time. At least the baby boom was a real phenomenon so that cohort is sort of useful to identify... To address your latter point, there are more professional rikishi today than there were 50 years ago, so I'm not sure where you're coming from with it.

    Terunofuji’s Knees/Dohyo-Iri

I remember reading something about Musashimaru (I think) in his later years consciously doing an iffy dohyo-iri to avoid aggravating his knees.

Height and weight data at March 2021 banzuke date

Not a single rikishi weighing 200+ from makushita and up seems notable.

The eerie repromotion unmasks numerous old, frankly unbearable joint injuries (Substitute a different word for F if so inclined)

I'd been sitting on that post since Harumafuji retired.

    Trivia bits

    Hakuhou is set to become the first rikishi with two separate reigns as the sole yokozuna on the banzuke. List of such reigns: 1. Nishinoumi I // 1890.05-1896.01 2. Konishiki I // 1896.05-1901.01 3. Oozutsu // 1901.05-1903.05 4. Miyagiyama // 1931.01-1931.03 5. Tamanishiki // 1933.01-1935.05 6. Taihou // 1969.09-1970.01 7. Kitanofuji // 1971.11-1973.01 8. Chiyonofuji // 1986.03-1986.07 9. Hokutoumi // 1992.03-1992.05 10. Akebono // 1993.03-1994.11 11. Asashouryuu // 2004.01-2007.05 12. Hakuhou // 2010.03-2012.09 13. Hakuhou (2) // 2021.05- That is to say, Hakuhou's yokozuna tenure has not only outlasted his sole predecessor's, but has enveloped the entirety of those of the three next rikishi to gain the rank.

    March basho 2021

It's perhaps worth mentioning that all of Takayasu's wins this basho, with the exception of out-of-nick Ounoshou, have come against rikishi against whom he had a winning or even record. In his last two honwari bouts he faces Tobizaru (0-1 against) and Takanoshou (1-2 against, Takanoshou has won the last two).

    Sandanme Tsukedashi = too low?

Been wondering about this. As late as the year 2000 there used to be Ms60TDs. Perhaps it's a more appropriate spot on the banzuke to put these rikishi.

    March basho 2021

Yeah, wasn't there a rikishi who publicly declared the next basho was going to be his last before intai and then they made him retire before the basho started? I seem to remember that if you declare that you're intai, it's effective immediately.

    March basho 2021

I hope we get a good 4-horse setup going into the last few days, with Hakuhou, Takakeishou, Terunofuji and Mitakeumi fighting for the yusho. Hopefully they can all last 15 days.

Aminishiki had the same type of knee braces for years and it was a non-issue, apart from injury speculation.

    Banzuke for Haru 2021

I can't for the life of me think of another scenario that doesn't border on the insane (as if this doesn't already) where a M2w can go 23-7 and not make sekiwake.

    Rikishi Citizenship data?

A good place to start would be the SumoDB; you have the option to see shusshin and highlight the non-Japanese ones, like this. There's also a lot of good nuggets of information on Naganoyama's site, perhaps the Special Categories tab would be a good place to start (here). But do keep in mind that neither of those things reflects actual citizenship 100% accurately, if that's strictly what you're looking for.

    Tokitsukaze under house arrest

Very off-topic, but in Greek there is a lovely expression meaning balagan that literally means "the prostitute's railing". It comes from before the war, when a very popular prostitute's clients would tie gifts to her on her front yard fence, which was comprised of waist-high thin rails. When the locals would wake up in the morning, they would look at the fence and see all sorts of things tied up to the rails, a real clusterf*ck as Tigerboy would say, hence the expression. The woman's name was Sonia; her house was on what is now Alexandras avenue in the neighbourhood of Gyzi. Her legacy, besides the slang, includes Sonia Café at the location of the famous railing, and the nearby Sonia bus stop.

2021 "Kozumo" Hatsu Basho discussion thread

I haven't been following the basho until now due to health problems I've been dealing with (all fine now), just went to check the yusho arasoi and I have one thing to say. Daieishou got absolutely screwed by the banzuke committee. M2w 10-5 only good enough for M1w? You have drawn his ire. 8-0, 9-1, whatever, this doesn't stop here. Daieishou is not going to be stopped until he reaches a rank where his banzuke luck isn't a factor.
