    Canadian Sumo Hope

    Looking powerful!
  2. Oh I understand that (at least the part about the komusubi with the better record or Tochi if same record--I wasn't sure about Goeido)...but seeing things unfold on the way to the result being determined is what adds the most intrigue to the tournament for me. As for other things, I'm disappointed to see Oosu at 1-5 but he was there last tournament and got his KK with a day to spare, so I'm hoping he turns things around in the same way. Terunofuji doesn't look to be close to his best but even in his current state he's tough for nearly everyone to beat. I'm glad that Kaisei beat Ikioi and I've found myself rooting against Ikioi during the last two tournaments, perhaps because I don't like seeing someone at the top of the leader-board when their opposition has been significantly weaker than most of the other rikishi there. Sekitori aside, I've been tracking the progress of Ura, Daiki, Chiyonoumi (now at 17-0 with a playoff win on top of that), and of course Homarenishiki, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they progress over the next year. There's been lots of talk of Brodie and Ura, but what do people think of the other two?
  3. The thing I'm most curious about right now is who will be at sekiwake next basho. One of the sekiwake will be 2-5 after their bout today, while Yoshikaze and Tochinoshin seem to at least be on track for a KK considering the drop in opposition they'll have over the second week and their recent strong form. Goeido is doing okay so far but a losing record still isn't out of the question. Will the sekiwake maintain their rank? And if one spot opens, who will get the nod between Yoshi, Tochi, and Goeido assuming the first two KK and the last MK's? For me those are the most interesting questions right now.

    English speaking sekitori

Sorry if this has been done before but I couldn't find it when I searched. Does anyone know which non-American sekitori---retired or active---could/can speak English beyond just a couple words/phrases? I'm fairly new to sumo and the only one I can think of is Oosunaarashi, but I'd be surprised if there aren't other examples.
  5. I understand that he's an oshi man, but Mitakeumi looks useless on the belt so far.
  6. Totally get what you mean. I'm a fan of Gagamaru but he's looked so poor lately (can hardly move without falling over) that I'm almost glad to see him repeatedly MK'ing.
  7. Glad to see Osu get a big win and another kinboshi. I'm hoping he gets his KK and a komusubi spot frees up for him to take....I think his sumo is lower sanyaku already but obviously things have to come together on the banzuke. As has been mentioned, it didn't seem as if Teru put up full resistance when he was put in a vulnerable position. I don't like seeing him in that condition and as a fan of his I'll be satisfied simply if he avoids kaboban.
  8. Brodie looked very crude ....hopefully his technique improves soon
  9. i would like to see that post. could you post a link? http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=19091#entry178894

    Baruto activities

Did Akebono not have some of the best tsuppari attacks in sumo history? I can see how it's related to striking but I'm not sure they're comparable enough that being effective at one means you'll be effective at the other.

    Kyushu 2015 Banzuke

Thought Osu would've been at M1e....

I don't see this ending well for him, at least from a competitive perspective.

I'm about as big of an Ichinojo fan as you can get, but even I will say that Osunaarashi should be M1e, and Ichinojo M1w, especially because Ichinojo has just rebounded from a terrible tournament, while Osunaarashi has built up momentum since his injury. in some sense I wish Osunaarashi could have been K2w next basho, but alas, no forced promotions this time around. I agree. In my opinion Oosu should be ahead and I hope to see him land a komusubi spot soon.

I know they were throwing zabuton at the yumitorikishi after Yoshikaze upset Kakuryu on day three, but the gif seems to be from a different occasion based on who is in the background.

    Rikishi extra activities

lol---my first thought was 'kind of odd he's got his shirt off'. As for the writting, I recall reading or hearing in a video that he did very poorly in that aspect in sumo school, though I guess that's not surprising given how new he was to the language.

:-( at that gif As a Terunofuji fan I'm still disappointed. First I thought he was running away with it, then with the three losses and injury I thought he was finished, then he comes back on the final day to get his first win over Kakuryu and he was right back in it, then he again lets his opponent get underneath him and he loses the playoff without putting up much of a fight. These these sorts of ups and downs can be painful, although they're also part of why I love sumo.

Very disappointed that Teru lost that playoff after he got my hopes up with the first win. Hopefully he recovers well and works on preventing opponents from getting under his armpits as was repeatedly the case over the last third.

Well Toyohibiki went from a 10-0 juryo yusho leader to a 10-5 choker.

There should be nothing shameful about evading an over-eager opponent and using their aggression against them. It's not as if a henka is impossible to effectively deal with either, and if a rikishi reacts correctly to an attempted henka it often puts them in an advantageous position.

Ikioi has been winless against everyone he's faced above M6----I think he has a better chance of ending 10-5 than of winning the yusho.
