    The Wall 2020

Kitanowaka is my favourite of the young guns--very impressive as an amateur and making a nice steady rise in the pros so far. He has the right body and all the content is there for the higher levels. I think only serious injury will stop him from becoming a sekitori in the next year or 2. Yoshii has a solid shot of making makushita at just 16...I am pulling for the youngster. I have to admit that Daikisho has gone completely under my radar.

    Haru 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Well, the Meisei ozeki talk from a couple tournaments ago has been put on hold, so I guess Aoiyama can have another turn

    Terunofuji Watch

I don't think he necessarily looks like his injuries have flared up, more like his sloppy sumo has been exploited by higher ranked opponents who are quick and have the speed to prevent him from settling in and establishing his power. Mitoryu seems like the type of slow and bumbling guy he should beat tonight if he's got some energy left...

    New recruits for Haru 2020

Fukasawa is an under-the-radar newcomer to keep an eye on over the longer run. He wasn't particularly accomplished in individual high school competition (although neither was Kotoshoho), with a top 8 being his best national result, but he was excellent in team bouts and overall won a large majority of his matches in national competition. He is strong, has a good body on which to build, and does fundamentally solid yotsu sumo.

    Haru 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Terunofuji has been favouring the right elbow after a couple matches but has still scored some wins since then...hopefully it's nothing more than a niggle.

    General Corona Banter

Believe it or not I haven't really been following this much, so just how terrified should I be?
  8. Katooshu

    Shodai, a possible Ozeki ?

Too low ranked in the preceding tournaments

    Yersin Baltagulov

He was the most improved competitor on the college scene last year, and the only one who could rival Nakamura for power. As for his stats, he is a big guy for sure, but 198cm seems at least 5cm too many...

    Banzuke for Haru 2020

He started his 7th stint at 6-2, and I was feeling excited for him. But if anything is a law in the sumo world, it is that Kizenryu must MK in juryo and fall out of the division straight away, so of course he lost his next 3 matches, got injured, and withdrew from the tournament. I remember reading old threads here, and there was a poster who was in graduate school or teaching in Japan and did some keiko at Nihon University while Kizenryu was there. If I recall correctly, he said that Kiz was a very nice guy, but weak and passive, and that he never expected him to even try pro sumo.

    New recruits for Haru 2020

2 henka, 2 different outcomes. Check out that air time he got vs Motobayashi I watched 5 matches he had from this tournament, and 4 were henka--either straight up leaps like the first one, or slightly more subtle HNH-ish ones

Hagiwara henkas in nearly every match
  13. Is this tournament not being held this year?

    Retired before Haru 2020

I liked watching Wakaichiro. He was fast and all-action.

    Enho - predictions?

My prediction is that he won't make it out of high makushita. He's simply too small and it will only take his opponents 1 match against him to completely figure him out.

Promotion/Demotion and Yusho discussion Hatsu 2020

Does Hokutofuji have much of a chance at sekiwake or is Shodai pretty much a lock?

    Arawashi intai

I always liked how he conducted himself on the dohyo. Calm and respectful.

    New recruits for Haru 2020

Having just completed his final year of university sumo, he'd be 22 or 23 I'd think

    New recruits for Haru 2020

I've read on a Japanese amasumo blog that Yukihiro Hasimoto, last year's captain of Waseda University, will be turning pro with Onoe beya (apparently his family has Kumamoto ties like the oyakata). He has a sandamne qualification as a result of making the best 8 of the student championships. He was also runner-up in a national tournament earlier that year, and in his 2nd-year was the 135kg national weight class champion. On the right. He is about 178cm and 125kg, and is an oshi-specialist. He reminds me a bit of Chiyonoumi. He is also the guy beating Naya in the second video above

Kindai sumo club coach Ito in memoriam

Rather shocking! I noticed him in the background at most of the college events, and he was always smiling, even when his guys lost. He had a good rivalry with Nittaidai's Dr. Saito, with them facing off in back-to-back All Japan yusho matches and each winning once. In the mid-80s he was also thorn in the side of the biggest amateur star of the time, Kushima/Kushimaumi. Some of his matches are on YouTube but I can't search at the moment...a small but very skillful competitor.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

I mean Asanoyama was at M2 for his 10-5, would that really not be considered legit when his rank still put him in a position to face virtually everyone? And dang about Hak's pullout, I wanted another kinboshi for Hokutofuji

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

My man Hokutofuji with kinboshi #7 in only 20 makuuchi tournaments ! The bright side of just missing out on sanyaku so often

Ya, it may 'only' be juryo, but it's great to see him with some swagger and the 'mean' face again
