    Corona and sumo

At his size it's hard to keep an eye off him! I can't see him becoming a sekitori and his 0-7 wasn't too surprising. He'd already been figured out in high school and I doubt his body holds up for long.

    Are Abi's days numbered?

He was stupid and put himself and potentially others at risk, but intai is a shame. It does feel a bit much to me, but I guess as a rikishi you should know that stuff like this can mean the axe.

The young generation (japanese rikishi only)

It has kind of snuck up on me that rikishi like Shodai, Hokutofuji, Endo, Mitakeumi, and Shodai are already in their 30s or late 20s this year!

Do you eat eggs for breakfast?

I love eggs but only eat them when I'm out at a restaurant for breakfast, which is at most a few times a year.

This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!

I freaking loved this basho, not only in makuuchi but in the other divisions as well

    Kizenryu Intai

With Kiz I always feel obliged to mention the post a forum member in Japan made many years ago. Having done keiko with him in his university days at Nichidai, they mentioned that they were surprised to see him turn pro, because he was such a nice guy, and based on their keiko together he just seemed too gentle for ozumo. I always cheered for him after that, and was particularly disappointed when after a 6-2 start and seemingly headed for his first juryo KK, an injury got the better of him and forced him out of that basho. But almost 10 tournaments as a sekitori is still a good accomplishment, one that most rikishi will never reach, and I'm sure the kids of Kagawa will uwatenage-ing better than ever in no time

This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!

I have seen a lot of him as an amateur. He is big (2m!) and strong, but slow, a bit clumsy, and technically basic, with a style I find rather ugly. His potential is good but the highest level is a while off! Nice start though, going 7-0, including beating a couple of collegiate rikishi (albeit not particularly good ones) and a solid high schooler in Ofukusawa. I am pumped for day 15! Hoping for a Terunofuji win, and if not, a Mitakeumi win.

    The Wall 2020

Per another thread, it was 31 years ago, accomplished in Natsu 1989 by some random guy named Takahanada And Kitanowaka KK

He would get big cheers when appearing for his lower division matches on his way back to makuuchi. He's had an inspiring comeback from nearly the bottom of the banzuke, and I imagine with that, and simply the passing of time, animosity towards him has cooled considerably. A few henkas and his trademark angry face might change that though! Imagine if that's how he beats Asanoyama in a playoff for the cup...

Enho university wrestling in 2014 (age 20)

Incidentally, Kamiyama also eliminated Hokutofuji from that tournament (ashitori I think), and would've thus been his final amateur opponent. Mitakeumi ended up winning this one to get the Ms10TD qualification.

Shonnanoumi is one to keep an eye on himself. He is young, big and tall, and has a lot of tools, and though he's struggled to put it all together consistently at the higher makushita ranks, I still like his sekitori potential a lot.

Doesn't Hak have an incredible record against 1st time opponents? I recall reading about that here at some point...

I think Mitakeumi is pretty well-rounded: he's one of the most powerful coming straight ahead with thrusts and pushing, but can also counter on the back foot and do some belt work. His balance and stability are impressive too, especially considering how aggressive he can be, and for a guy his size he's got some speed as well. When he's on form I'd say he does almost everything well, though perhaps there is no 1 area where he is great. His big issue seem to be losing steam as the basho goes on...

They aren't doing any worse than I'd expect them to be doing in general at those ranks, though the extra rest could certainly help some rikishi more than others.

This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!

I usually don't like to say much about form so early on (day 1: so and so is looking good, day 5: so and so just isn't himself this basho, day 8: wow, so and so is the next ozeki, day 13: so and so just isn't ready for this level of sumo, might need to regroup in juryo)..... but Asanoyama is winning like he's facing small children, and that includes beating 2 opponents he didn't have winning records against. Nice progress Ishibashi , let's see how he does next vs another guy leading their head to head (Daieisho).

Asashoryu's ketaguri - good or bad?

Legit move, but not really impressive as a ketaguri--looked to me like Kise was going down from the henka and Asa's foot came in after the matter.

    Rikishi Families In Attendance?

Mitakeumi's mom has been a great supporter, even as an amateur she was there with large groups screaming for him (in orange). Vs some random doofus in 2012 Speaking of family in attendance, this video and hundreds of others were filmed by Shiraishi's father, who filmed dozens of his son's amateur competitions is one of the best sources of amasumo video (though his son turning pro seems to have led to a hiatus or retirement from that).

    New Takanofuji Scandal

Usually I feel a touch of sadness when I see that an ex-rikishi is going to try MMA, but in this case I'm all for him getting punched.
