Basho Talk - Kyushu Basho 2016 ** (SPOILERS)
ScottyJoyJrBebe replied to Sakura's topic in Honbasho Talk
My first ever sumo match I watched was May in 1991, when Chiyonofuji took on Takahanada. I saw the GREAT Chiyonofuji only 3 times before he called it quits :( However, I have had the privilege to see all of his career on many different videos on you tube, and NO JOKE, he could demoralize an opponent with that stare alone. Watched one recap of him vs Hokutenyu, and when Hokutenyu tried to match the stare, it seemed like "The Wolf" transformed in front of him, and Hokutenyu went from "Yeah, you don't scare me" to "Oh S***, I made him mad...." perhaps Goeido is channeling him from beyond........... -

Goeido is bringing back the stare-down, I find that AWESOME. I remember my 1st round of watching sumo, and seeing classic stare-downs from Akinoshima, Takatoriki, and (in my mind) the master, Takanonami. i can remember a few times when Takanonami would eye-up Musashimaru, and it would look like fists were gonna fly. Goeido looks DEADLY serious with it, and I believe its a weapon in his arsenal. -

A big Mahalo to all three of our You Tube Sumo Providers. The interaction was priceless. I made a comment on the forum some time ago about hoping that these 3 could have a "summit", and I'm VERY HAPPY it has come to pass. John is the level headed moderator, while Moti makes everything he says full of color and life, and Jason is the everyman and loyal to his peeps. I'm not gonna spoil the vid for everyone, but I must AGREE with Moti about his prediction for the Yusho. Totally AGREE. My "Prediction" Moti 15-0 Y Jason 13-2 J John 12-3 K -
Mitakeumi's Smile is SO SINCERE. Definite Future Ozeki, no doubt about it.
-
Goeido 15-0 Y (Becomes 72nd Yokozuna-Unryu Style) Kisenosato 13-2 J (Restarts his Tsunatori) Ichinojo 13-2 J (Mirroring his performance 2 years Ago) Takayasu 12-3 K (Becomes Ozeki) Mitakeumi 8-7 S (Defeats Kakuryu on Day 5) Kakuryu 1-4 (Intai announcement following loss to Mitakeumi) This would be a VERY MEMORABLE CLOSE to 2016.
-
Its nice to hear that Goeido will bypass the celebration to concentrate on his chance at the tsuna. I also agree that 13 wins should be enough, as that would give him a 2 basho record of 28-2, similar to Kakuryu (and others I imagine). Goeido is my sons favorite wrestler, and he is turning 3 years old next month, so this is an "early" b-day gift :) 15-0 Y 13-2 Y/D/J Go-Go-Goeido!!!!

HHHHUUUU!!!! -
Mahalo for your efforts Asojima!!! This is a nice and fresh way to compare the Yokozuna. Poor Onokuni, STILL comes in as the one of, if not straight out, the weakest.

Heartfelt Congrats to OZEKI Goeido. He must have heard me call him "Ozekiwake" all those times before, I am now eating my words with a fork and knife. Who would have guessed it, everyone's favorite Whipping Boy is now on a REAL tsuna run. Let the "Kadozuna" dixcussion begin! -
The first sumo match I ever saw on tv (tape delay) was Chiyonofuji vs Takahanada, 25 years ago.Ive always wondered why he never bevame chairman of the NSK, in any case he is very often viewed as the strongest rikishi of modern times,I will miss him. Aloha, Chiyonofuji

While I am not a Fan of his. I would fully support a promotion with any kind of Yusho Win and his current record. Even a 9w and 6l (nearly improbable as it may be) Yusho would be enough in my eyes. However, the only ones whose opinion count is the YDC. 9-6 Y? Is that even possible? I think there was a Juryo Yusho that ended that way correct? Wasn't there like 50,000 rikishi in the playoff? (ok...maybe not that many...but 8 or 10 correct?) Would a 9-6 Y be enough for an Ozeki Run? -

I will go out on a limb and join Dapeng in supporting a promotion with 13 or more wins, yusho or not. Will the NSK/JSA do it? Most likely not. -

And if my grandma had wheels she'd be a bus, but reality just doesn't work that way.. :-) As a Star Trek Fan, I appreciate this quote on MANY levels. It's also been a Greek saying since before Star Trek existed. Usually the annoying comeback of a strict middle-aged woman. Point taken. Well Said. -

That would be 51 wins against 9 losses in 4 tournaments. I know I saw something about "49/4" being a threshold of sorts. I cant remember if that was official or just someone's good idea. Although some here are tired of the "Kisenosato" discussion, I find it engaging, since those of us who are not quite on the "expert" level as others are doing research, watching videos and getting more knowledgeable about the sport and its history. With the NSK coming straight out and saying "A tournament win in Sept. would please everyone" I would think that it should be obvious that a yusho is needed to get his tsuna. The announcement explicity had no exact number of wins, hence their way of saying "Just get one, and your good" I would LOVE to see him get it without a yusho at 13 (or even 14) wins, but the naysayers would kill that before it got off the table. When I re-started my coverage of sumo last year in January, I was NOT a Kisenosato fan. However, as of late, he has grown on me as a competitor, and his tsunatori is engaging at the level that one would wanna see a Japanese Yokozuna just as a change of pace. Tsuna or Not, Kisenosato has won me over as a fan. Ozekiwake Goeido? That's another story entirely.............. -

Since were on the HOT topic of Kisenosato, may i offer a respite by posing this question to all who care: Does anyone think Kakuryu will get another Yusho before he hangs it up? I have a bad habit of comparing him to Onokuni, and for the Kakuryu fans out there I do apologize. Its just hard not to see him as "3rd banana" (or even 4th if what some say of Kisenosato is to be taken literally) AND: A really big MAHALO to Moti for having the shortest retirement in history, we are ALL lucky to have your continuing services. Should you ever find yourself in Hawaii (Oahu), let me know :-D That offer also goes to Jason (if he is on these forums) and John Gunning. Actually, its an offer too EVERYONE. -

Wakanohana III would have been remembered that way, but he is considered a sub-par Yokozuna. Goeido is firmly back in his Ozekiwake routine. Kotoshogiku may yet decide to hang it up this year. I would like to believe Terunofuji is the 72nd (73rd?) Yokozuna, but ever since that 12-3 D last year, he hasn't been what most want him to be. (IMO) Ichinojo, Kotoyuki, Shodai, and Mitakeumi and have the YOUTH to make it to Ozeki. Will there skill set match?????? -

To Resume the Kisenosato Discussion, this is from The Japan Times: Harumafuji’s triumph ended Kisenosato’s hopes of ascending to sumo’s highest rank. Kisenosato, in his third yokozuna promotion bid, entered the 15th and final day at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium needing a win and a loss by Harumafuji to force a playoff. Although Kisenosato failed to achieve his lofty goal, he will take his fourth shot at yokozuna promotion in September, according to the director of the Japan Sumo Association’s judging department. “If he wins a championship (in September), everyone will be satisfied,” sumo elder Nishonoseki said. Has there been an announcement yet about who has won a sansho and/or who will win one if they win their senshuraku bout? Kanto-Sho: Takarafuji AND Takanoiwa Shukun-Sho: Yoshikaze Gino-Sho: Takayasu All of who are VERY deserving. Chisafuwaku got 4 of the 5 recipients! -

I have the strangest feeling Kisenosato WILL triumph today. When someone's "Worst" record is 10-5, I think that speaks volumes by itself. Konosuke always sounds CONSTIPATED. Maybe we can send him some Pepto Bismol? Milk of Magnesia? Guava Juice? Pitted Prunes? -

An 8th yusho from Harumafuji is quite appealing. I always thought that he would get 10 before he hangs it up. -
