Thundersnow, you probably already know, but Ama was Harumafuji's previous Shikona.

No, he has always been in Miyagino Beya. If you listen closely, the announcer first says he's Mongolian and then says, "Miyagino Beya". It rolls right off his tongue so it's a little hard to understand.

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)
sumojoann replied to code_number3's topic in Honbasho Talk
I am just now reading about drinking among the rikishi. I recall this video featuring Hakuho at a party with friends we all know. They might have been drinking beer but if so, it wasn't their first one. I wonder if May 20, 2012, was during the basho! I recall another video showing trash stacked up behind a heya, and there were so many brown beer bottles, it was amazing. And last, on Day 12 of the Aki Basho in 2014, the day I was introduced to Hakuho, I was invited to lunch by our mutual friend. There were only 4 of us --- Hakuho, Hakuho's trainer, the friend and me. Hakuho immediately offered me a "Beeru" (not sure of spelling). He had one himself and it wasn't treated as a big deal. No one seemed surprised. Later that day, he defeated Kisenosato, so I guess the Beeru didn't do any harm! -
2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Back on Sept 14th, I went out on a limb and predicted that Meisei would win the Yusho. I still predict he will, although if Takakeisho's knees hold out, Meisei may not be able to defeat him. Very little is being mentioned about Meisei possibly winning. He may not be exciting to watch but he's solid and consistent. He must be doing something right to be currently tied for first place, although I don't think he's fought the higher-ranked Rikishi yet. I hope he gets to fight the "Big Boys" so we can see what's he's really made of! That would be so cool to see someone at M10 win the Yusho, but it may just be wishful thinking on my part. -
Here is Ama at the 2002 Aki Basho. He was in Makushita at the time.

Here's a video of Hakuho at the 2002 Aki Basho. He was in Sandamne at that time!

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)
sumojoann replied to code_number3's topic in Honbasho Talk
It's too soon to tell, of course, but I predict that Meisei will win the Yusho. It looks like Kakuryu will go kyujo probably today, Hakuho is out for the count, Okinoumi's nerves are starting to show, Takakeisho is having some bad luck and Ishiura is too small. Meisei's biggest obstacle is Mitakeumi who's looking very good. We'll see...... -
2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)
sumojoann replied to code_number3's topic in Honbasho Talk
I noticed it while watching the live broadcast but I still don't know if Takakeisho fell because of his knee injury or if tripping over the sandal was the cause. Personally, I think it was the sandal, but now I'm concerned that as a result of being tripped, it re-aggravated his knee injury. -

Not sure if anyone has already posted the Asanoyama/Goeido bout where the hapless Gyoji Tamajiro took a dive. It's initially off-camera but you can hear the thud at 2:30. Poor guy! -

I finally figured that out! He DID win his bout against Yutakayama and is 5-1 but in Juryo, not Makuuchi. -

2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Oh, this is getting to be really exciting! Okinoumi 6-0 with SEVEN nipping at his heels with 5-1 -------- Ishiura, Enho, Meisei, Miyogyru, Mitakeumi, Endo and Takakeisho! -
Hi again, Profomisakari, I hate to keep bringing up problems (or maybe it's not a problem), but I think I guessed 3 correctly, not 2. I guessed #7.B, #14.A and #18.B correctly. I guessed wrong on #20. Enho is on the Game Chart TWICE, #14 and #15. Was that a mistake? Can you tell me what TB1 and TB2 mean? And how do you determine what a player's TB number is? What does the sentence "By TB2 Wamahada leads before Chisayama because he has given his tip rather" mean?
-
Can someone clarify the number of bouts that qualified for this game on Day 1? Did Enho vs Onosho count? (Enho is on the game chart twice). I thought that there were 4 bouts, not 3. I thought #7 (Shodai vs Tamawashi), #14 (Enho vs Onosho), #18 (Toyonoshima vs Tsurugisho) and # 20 (Tochiozan vs Yutakayama) were all on the Day 1 Torikumi. Please correct me if I am wrong.
-
Oh, I'm excited! The Torikumi for Day 1 has match-ups for # 7 (Shodai vs Tamawashi), #14 (Enho vs Onosho), #18 ( Toyonoshima vs Tsurugisho) and #20 (Tochiozan vs Yutakayama)!!

So if I understand correctly, if Tochinoshin is kyujo for the entire basho, then "X" would not be appropriate and would be counted as a wrong answer. Correct? However, if Tochinoshin goes kyujo on day 3, for example, and he had not yet been scheduled to wrestle Endo, then "X" would count as a correct answer. Correct? The last sentence is confusing to me. Does that mean if a bout is actually scheduled between Endo & Tochinoshin, and on the eve or the morning of the bout, Tochinoshin announces he is kyujo, then Endo would get 21 points according to the rules of this game? And does that mean that any players who guessed Endo would win will get 21 points added to their score? Thanks for helping me understand this game!
-
Oh, I thought it referred to people's personalities!! lol I'm surprised I'm not the most disagreeable by your definition. I'm not sure I used "X" correctly. I used it because I think Tochinoshin will be kyujo for all or most of the basho, so I am predicting that there will be no bout between Endo & him as a result. Is that the correct use of "X"?

What is the criteria for an agreeable player vs a disagreeable player?

Tiger Tanaka, this is for you!!!!! Fascinating documentary that goes into detail on the making of "You Only Live Twice". The sumo wrestling scenes are very brief but it's stated that the bouts were real, that the wrestlers wouldn't do them unless they were, and that they gathered 8,000 people together for the Sumo Grand Championship. They also indicated that the audience sound was the actual soundtrack of the audience (watching the sumo bouts). The sumo wrestling scenes start at 20:45 and end at 21:24.

Hi Andonishiki, You don't know me but I want to wish you a very Happy 104th Birthday!!! And I wish you many more!!! I'm sure we are all wondering what your secret is to living such a long life. Is it living in Bora Bora, Tahiti? Is it your passion for sumo wrestling? If you have time, I would love to hear back from you. I'm sure you are a very interesting man. Foremost in my mind is the question of how long have you been a fan of sumo wrestling? If you have been a fan for many years, it would be absolutely fascinating to read about your memories and your impressions of how sumo wrestling has changed over the decades. If you choose to summon up your memories, I for one, and I know there would be many others, would feel very privileged to learn from you. In the meantime, I hope you are having a great time on your special day!!
