Hokutofuji is kyujo.

Asanoyama is kyujo!

In, please!

Nice to see Kaisei as guest announcer today. Oho almost lost his mawashi. I didn't know at one point if I should look away. I didn't, of course! I noticed the gyoji checking him out front and back, front and back. Thank goodness Oho won the bout when he did. What an awful landing by Tamawashi! I am very concerned that our Ironman might be kyujo tomorrow for the first time in his sumo career. His upper spine was bent backwards. On his way back to the dressing area, he held onto his tsukebito's shoulders with both hands and I could feel the pain in his eyes. OMG again! This time it was Tsurugisho picking up Hokuseiho and depositing him outside the dohyo. Are these rikishi making bets now to see who else can do this?? Or did Tsurugisho just say to himself, "Well, dang! If Nishikigi can do it, why not me??" Takanosho's win looked good but when he exited the dohyo, his right leg was bothering him. Hopefully it won't hold him back. Takayasu vs Midorifuji ----- WTF???? WOW! Definitely the Makuuchi Bout of the Day! Just excellent sumo from my favorite Little Guy. It's too bad that both Endo and Onosho are MK this early in the basho. I wish Shodai would fight like this every day. Even though he ultimately lost, he fought hard and his loss was nothing to be ashamed of. I had really looked forward to Kotonowaka vs Gonoyama. I thought it would be a hard-fought battle between an on-his-way-to-becoming-Ozeki and a very promising up-and-comer, but it was anti-climactic as Kotonowaka made dispatching Gonoyama look easy. Daieisho continued his winning record (12-7) against Asanoyama. Daieisho had cupping on his back which I had never seen on him before. Their bout was over in 2 blinks of an eye. Wakamotoharu hasn't looked confident this basho. I was glad to see Hoshoryu not playing any silly mind games today. Hoshoryu won as I expected but that sure was a hard fall, one of several hard falls today. I was pleased to see Hoshoryu showing concern for the possibly injured Wakamotoharu afterwards. There was only one matta today (in Makuuchi) and it was the Nishikigi vs Kirishima bout. Kirishima waltzed Nishikigi out quickly and easily. Kirishima is looking good this basho. I really didn't know what to expect between Takakeisho and Abi but I was hoping for a little more excitement. The highlights for me today were the Tsurugisho vs Hokuseiho and Takayasu vs Midorifuji bouts. I love the element of surprise and I always love watching Midorifuji. So now we've got a 4-way tie for first place with 6 others nipping at their heels. Exciting but of course way too early to call.

So interesting! And if you scroll down, there are other sumo-related stories from the past, including the infamous Abi/Wakamotoharu "bondage" picture incident.

I definitely agree. He strikes me as quiet, unassuming, friendly and likeable away from the dohyo, (but of course fearless once he steps onto it). I'll see if I can find a particular Youtube video that supports my opinion. It was filmed at the Oct 2022 Sumo Fan Appreciation Festival in Tokyo. In this video, a large number of Makuuchi rikishi were called to the stage and introduced one-by-one. The rikishi that were already on the stage generally maintained neutral expressions on their faces as the newly-introduced ones passed by them. However, it was very interesting to see some warm smiles(or lack thereof) shown by the rikishi that were already on the stage towards some of the rikishi that were being introduced. EDIT TO ADD VIDEO, make corrections and add comments. The picture quality is very poor but in watching the video again, I noticed that the following rikishi received warm smiles --- Takanosho, Nishikigi, Midorifuji, Tobizaru and Shodai (although it's possible they were laughing at Shodai!). The Makuuchi rikishi became quite stone-faced when the following rikishi were introduced --- Endo, Ura, Meisei, Abi and especially Takakeisho. And to a certain extent Terunofuji. These are just my impressions. Your opinions might differ.

You have a very good memory. Thank you!

Thanks! My little folding kimarite guide tells me that that is an "over thigh scooping body drop." It must be quite rare. I don't think I've ever see it before.
-
This was an amazing night of sumo! My jaw hit the ground when Nishikigi of all people actually picked up Hokuseiho.
-
What was the name of that kimarite that Takayasu used in his bout with Hoshoryu? It was great!!
-
The first time I played "Sekitori Sweepstake, I drew Gonoyama, who was in Juryo at that time. I knew nothing about him but was happy with his 9-6 result. What I like the most is his jutting jaw. Not a tall rikishi, but he just has a certain look about him --- tough, scrappy, determined, relentless, a fearless fighter. He looked surprised when he lost last night. Barring serious injury, I see him going far.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbwy49xd_YU&t=1398s Jason of Jason's All-Sumo Channel is having a contest, the winner of which receives an ORIGINAL Tegata from Kirishima!! The contest consists of a game (see the link in the description of the video). Entrants pick one rikishi from each of 5 groups to make up their "team". The groups are ----- Yokozuna/Ozeki ----- Sekiwake/Komusubi ----- M1-M5 ----- M6-M11 ----- M12-M17. Good luck to the person who has the winning "team!" (Edited to add note -- Jason said the cutoff date to enter is Mon, Nov 13, but I would have thought it would be before the start of the basho).
-
I received a detailed response from Jason to my email regarding the cutoff time for game entries. I was pleased that he took the time and made the effort to help me understand things from his point of view. As follows -------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun, Nov 12 at 2:13 AM Joann - Thanks for the email and I appreciate your thoughts. You're not the first person to bring this up. You have to look at it from my point of view and maybe it will make more sense. Some of my viewers, like you, are dedicated SUMO fans who keep up with all the latest developments. But many are more casual fans or even brand new fans. The main reason to have the contest is to get newer fans interested in lower ranked riksihi and maybe they'll discover a wrestler they want to root for every basho instead of just focusing on the top ranked sekitori. And of course to have fun as well. So I'm not so strict with the rules to encourage more people to join in the fun. Yes, that cutoff time allows some to see if their choices are winning on Days 1 and 2 and what kind of shape they're in, but you are free to change your choices as well. Since I live "in the future" most viewers don't see the matches until well after they happen live. Good luck in the contest and I hope your team puts up lots of wins! Best, Jason ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Midorifuji lost to Shonannoumi and was walking back to the dressing area, he was greeted with a smile by Chiyonokuni, who was in a blue jacket doing security duty. A few quick friendly words were exchanged. It was nice to see.

A fast-moving nearly invisible lethal mold begins to grow on it until it is completely enveloped.

You've made some good points, particularly about the opportunity to see how well they are fighting on Days 1 and 2. If they have new injuries we can see how much that might impact their performance. With all that being said, I still prefer that the cutoff time should be the Makuuchi bouts start time on Day 1 (4 PM Japan Time on Sun, Nov 12). But after all, it's Jason's game, not mine. And it now doesn't seem as unfair as I originally thought. Thanks @Sumo Spiffy
-
Jason should reconsider his rules. They are wildly unfair. In fact, I just sent him an email saying just that. (jasonsumo2023@gmail.com). His feeble explanation in the video is that there are sometimes last-minute kyujo announcements so it's a good thing to allow the contest entrants to have those extra 2 days. I pointed out that those last-minute kyujo announcements are normally made before the first Makuuchi bouts start at 4:00 PM Japan Time on Sun, Nov 12. THAT should be the cutoff time. The obvious problem is that anyone whose choices happen to lose on Days One and/or 2 will naturally change their choices, which is unfair. I told him that he seemed like a fair-minded person and he should let his rules reflect that.

Did Ex-Yokozuna Asashoryu get an invite or is he a persona non grata?
-
I didn't know that Buckethead was ever in Guns 'n' Roses! I was a big fan of the band around 1994 when they toured with Metallica (Use Your Illusion Tour). My husband & I saw them in Houston at the Astrodome and in New Orleans at the Superdome. Of course that was well before Buckethead joined the band.

Oh Fujisan, that's such GREAT news!! I've been thinking about you and wondering how you've been doing. Please give me your current address (private message if you prefer). I want to make another card for you.

The information in this article is not only old, but much of it is just WRONG! 1) Who is this Nominzaya Davaanyam he has supposedly been married to since 2018 and has had 2 children with?? Ex-Hakuho has been married since 2007 to a Japanese woman, Sayoko, and they have 4 children. 2) He did NOT begin sumo training in Mongolia at the age of 15. He participated in Bokh in Mongolia at a young age, yes, but not sumo. 3) He wasn't scouted by Miyagino-beya. He arrived in Japan as a skinny boy weighing about 137 lbs and didn't look promising at all. There are many stories about how it came to be that he joined Miyagino-beya, the funniest of which involved the then Miyagino Oyakata being allegedly drunk at the time he agreed to take him. 4) The article says Hakuho "faced fierce competition from fellow Yokozuna wrestlers Kakuryu and HAKUHO" (??). They probably meant Harumafuji. Asashoryu should have been mentioned, as well. 5) Singapore?? This is the first I've heard of this! 6) I hadn't heard that ex-Hakuho owns gyms in Japan (or elsewhere). Was this article written by a Bot?

*************** ATTENTION EVERYONE, I NOW HAVE ALL THE INFO I NEED TO OBTAIN THE BOOKS. THEY ARE ALL AVAILABLE FROM THIRD-PARTY SELLERS ON AMAZON.CO.JP. MOST OF THE USED BOOKSELLERS WON'T SHIP TO THE US SO A FRIEND IN JAPAN WILL SHIP THEM TO ME THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR MESSAGES AND HELP. ******************* ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello all, I hope you can help me. I am searching for 2 books by the 62nd Yokozuna Onokuni. They are available only in Japanese. I am interested in purchasing them. His full shikona was Onokuni Yasushi but I don't know how his name (as the author) would have been shown. 1) (Autobiography, published in 2008). TITLE --- "Winning Even When You Lose." 2) (Baking book, unknown publish date) TITLE --- "62nd Yokozuna Onokuni's National Sweets Tour." Here is the baking book's title in kanji (第62代横綱大乃国の全国スイーツ巡業). --- from Wikipedia. Thank you very much!

Thank you so much, @Akinomaki and @rokudenashi for the excellent information you have provided! It is all so helpful. After doing some checking, I think I will sign up with Tenso and have the 3 books I buy from amazon.co.jp shipped to the Japanese address they give me. They have a "consolidation" service so the 3 books I buy (probably from 3 separate sellers) can all be put in the same package that's shipped to me, saving me in shipping costs. Thanks again, guys! Because of all y'all's help, (including @Yarimotsu), a friend of mine is going to have a very Merry Christmas!

Thank you very much for your offer to help, Rokudenashi. As it turned out, getting the books shipped to me here in the US wasn't the biggest problem. The bigger issue I'm contending with is with amazon.co.jp. It won't show potential buyers any listings from third-party sellers who don't ship to their particular country. I found that out yesterday. That necessitated asking a friend in Japan to look at all the listings instead of the few from sellers who do ship to the US. It doesn't matter if I'm looking at the Japanese version of amazon.co.jp OR the English version of amazon.co.jp. It knows that I'm not in Japan. To give you a perfect example, the listing for the Autobiography showed 2 NEW starting at 5,104 Yen, 7 USED starting at 5.99 Yen and one COLLECTIBLE at 8,807 Yen. But when I tried to view all of the choices, it only allowed me to see the 2 NEW and the one COLLECTIBLE, which of course were the most expensive. When I specifically tried to view the 7 USED, I got a message rejecting my request. I don't recall the wording but it had to do with needing to supply an eligible address for shipping purposes. And all I wanted to do was VIEW the 7 USED listings! I really want a USED-LIKE NEW or a USED-VERY GOOD copy from a seller with a good feedback score, so it is frustrating. A partial language barrier has sprung up between my Japanese friend and me regarding the details of the 7 USED listings, but we're working through it. Thanks again for letting me know about Tenso and those type of package forwarding services.

(See edit on my first post). Thanks for everyone's messages and help!
