    Sekitori Sweepstake - May 2024

Is it too late for a friend of mine who has never played before to enter? He used to be quite active on SF but has been busy in other areas of his life. As soon as he finds his password, he’ll be back on board. In the meantime, I would like to register him for the game if it’s not too late.

    Asashoryu—-Does he have cancer?

Another quote from Reddit. Original source unknown. Originally published in Japanese, then translated to English using Google. Dated April 12, 2024. “I will be admitted to a hospital in Tokyo as of today. I don’t know the cause yet, but I’m undergoing tests. I hope I’ll get better and be able to smile again. I’m grateful to everyone who supports me. From Dorji” ————————————————— This is not new information. Both this quote and the original quote in my first post are dated April 12, 2024. Notice he said nothing about cancer in this quote. I’m trying not to be cynical but he does seem to like to be the center of attention.
  3. Sounds like you have a real bargain. I look at it this way. If I watch all 15 days of a basho and I’m paying $25USD/mo, that’s $1.67 for 2 hours of live sumo daily. That to me is a super bargain!
  4. We were paying $25USD/mo for TV Japan so it doesn’t bother us. I suppose if it really bothers you, you could sign up only during the months that have a basho, then discontinue it afterwards!
  5. TV Japan provided live coverage of the Makuuchi division in my area (Houston, Texas) for the past 11 to 12 years. That channel ceased broadcasting March 31 of this year. Replacing it is Jme, a streaming app costing $25USD/mo. Their website indicates that Jme is available in North America and Canada. I spoke with an agent with TV Japan at 1-877-885-2726. He was located in Japan and didn’t speak much English, but he tried to help anyway. He said that Jme consists of 3 channels, NHK-World Premium (which will have sumo coverage, though he didn’t know how much), NHK-World Japan and Jme Select. The agent also said I would need to sign up with a streaming service (he indicated Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, and I have since found out Google TV and Samsung TV). We want to watch sumo on TV but I know you can also watch it on iPhones, iPads and other devices. I was instructed to purchase some equipment from Best Buy to attach to our TV. If you sign up through Jme’s website before April 30, you get one month free. My husband and I are still in the middle of this transition and still have a number of questions, but I’m confident we’ll be up and running by the start of the Natsu Basho!

I doubt if anyone would think that marriage itself would cause problems in the ring. However, all joking aside, there does seem to be a causal relationship between being a newlywed and performing poorly at the next Basho (or next few Basho). Nishikifuji comes to mind as a recent example.

Somewhere, and I believe it was on SF, I saw a photo of Kirishima sitting at a table with a large group of Mongolians, eating a meal. It looked like a family meal. A young woman sitting at the table holding a baby, was identified as Kirishima’s wife. This was a while back. So unless they’re still in their honeymoon period, I doubt if marriage is the cause of his poor performance in the ring. EDIT to add ——- Per a post on Reddit, Kirishima got married in August 2019, and his daughter was born in February 2020.

Takakeisho sure didn’t put up much resistance in his bout with Wakamotoharu. I hope he didn’t get injured when he was thrown out of the ring yesterday.

I about died laughing at your comment after Endo lost. You said, “Perhaps Endo of career.” Please keep making your videos. Nobody does it better!

I am not qualified to give a professional answer to the questions above as I have not studied kinesiology (the scientific study of movement of human bodies). However, I’d like to make a few observations. When Terunofuji first reached Makuuchi, I knew he was doomed to have knee problems. When he was just standing around, he kept his knees in a “locked” position as opposed to a relaxed “flexed” position. Hakuho, on the other hand, almost always kept his knees in a flexed position. As a result, Hakuho had very few knee problems, if any, to my knowledge, up until close to the end of his fighting career. (At that point, as we know, he developed some serious knee problems). And regarding Terunofuji, I noticed that when he picked up his opponents in the early days, his knees were locked. For someone weighing close to 400 lbs, it was just a matter of time before his knees would pay the price . Takerufuji has an interesting body type. Fairly large and very powerful on top, legs a little thin in comparison. But if you take a close look at his body, taken as a whole, the best word I can come up with is SINEWY. His muscles are very well defined, in his legs as well as his upper body. It would be interesting to know what his BMI is.

I love how unflappable Takerufuji is. He dominated Onosato. I’m still amazed at how strong he is, especially with those “stick”- like legs, as has previously been mentioned.

I don’t recall this many upsets in a single day in Makuuchi. Just stunning!
  17. Frankly, I am stunned by these rumors of Hokuseiho’s cruelty, sadism and kleptomania. It just seems so at odds with so many people’s perception of him, including mine. To me, he seemed annoyingly passive and lacked the aggression needed to be a successful rikishi. I do have a question. Where was Magaki Oyakata (ex-Ishiura) when all this was presumably occurring right under his nose? Wasn’t he at the heya pretty much all the time? Another question — Is Hokuseiho officially out? I know he submitted his intai papers. I haven’t had time to watch the videos yet but in reading all of this thread, I haven’t seen anything confirming if he’s definitely out. Does anyone think Miyagino showed favoritism toward Hokuseiho because he is a fellow Mongolian? A comment was made that it seemed as though Hokuseiho didn’t really want to be a rikishi. If all these rumors are found to be true regarding his cruelty, sadism and kleptomania, he sounds like one really disturbed individual in need of treatment (which I hope gets, preferably post-ozumo).

    Sekitori Sweepstake - March 2024

I’d like to register my friend @Kaminariyuki. He’s been busy out of town and hasn’t had time to keep up with the goings-on on SF. He wouldn’t want to miss out on something this important!

    Sekitori Sweepstake - March 2024

Definitely count me in, please. This game is fun because if I’m not familiar with the rikishi I’ve drawn, I am more motivated to learn all I can about them. I drew Gonoyama while he was still in Juryo. I saw his potential then and was already rooting for him when he got promoted to Makuuchi. At this point, a number of SF members were not familiar with him, so I felt like I got a head start. So yes, count me in!
  20. I thought it was interesting that one of the sumo wrestlers Andrew Freund brought to Australia to participate in the Sumo International Down Under event was Ichinojo (pictured).

Terunofuji sure didn’t look like he’s one step away from retirement! Totally dominated Onosato who looked stunned for a moment as he lay on his back outside the dohyo. I loved that “business as usual” look on Terunofuji’s face afterwards. A great day of sumo!

Kirishima is absolutely amazing! Somehow he managed to keep Tamawashi’s hands completely off of his neck. Totally disarmed him and then just stood back watching him do that wild flip. Brilliant sumo.

Why wasn’t there a torinaoshi (and not even a mono-I!) in the Wakamotoharu/Kotoshoho bout?
