[12:26:44 AM] Watching day 7 live now on ustream. I paid $10 - figured I was going to be up until 3:30 AM anyways. They're almost halfway through Juryo so HEY [12:28:21 AM] I'll likely liveblog results - I mean why not if you don't have a really good archive. Day 5 and 6 up there are voiceover sportscast-like highlights, and you don't even get to see whole matches [12:28:32 AM] wow these guys are fat [12:30:56 AM] ha these two guys... Tokushinho 4-2 (Juryo-9E) and Wakanosato 1-5 (Juryo-W4) got all the way up and faced each other. They each put their two fists down, and they both looked at each other for a beat and then got up. [12:31:14 AM] then they walked out to face the audience, and slapped their thighs a couple times, and then came back to the middle to do it again [12:31:55 AM] Tokushinho (4-2, 9E) defeated Wakanosato (1-5, 8W), and now someone is singing loudly. [12:32:41 AM] It's some guy with a fan, and here come the next fighters. Akiseyama (3-3, Juryo-9W) and Azumaryo (5-1, Juryo-3W) [12:33:16 AM] they're walking around a bit, limbering up and slapping their thighs and buttocks [12:33:31 AM] oh, now they're throwing rice, and some guy is sweeping up around the ring [12:33:44 AM] oh, there's the high sumo kicks like from the timex commercials [12:34:02 AM] oh, now they look serious. oh, not quite, they both stand up again [12:34:26 AM] fists down, both of them, standing up, slapping their thighs again [12:34:37 AM] oh, hot towel on the face, Akiseyama [12:34:58 AM] it's an orange towel, which stands out against his purple mawashi [12:35:11 AM] the gyoji seems to be calling them to fight now [12:35:18 AM] very serious [12:35:24 AM] one fist [12:35:29 AM | Edited 12:35:32 AM] false start, sorry. [12:35:48 AM] again, the gyoji is calling to fight [12:35:53 AM] oh, another false start. [12:36:11 AM] they look like they're going to make this happen now [12:36:22 AM] they're only showing Azumaryo [12:36:53 AM] Akiseyama goes down in like a cartwheel. Legs flying everywhere [12:37:13 AM] oh, there's the singing again [12:37:34 AM] so that's 6 minutes between singings [12:37:37 AM] that's really not bad [12:38:31 AM] Jokoryu (4-2, Juryo-3E) vs Wakakoyu (2-4, Juryo-8W) [12:40:34 AM] fascinating watching this pre-match ritual - pretty much the same as described before [12:41:26 AM] no false starts this time, and Wakakoyo charges forward, but overextends himself. Jokoryu steps a and pushes him out with his own momentum. It looks pretty clumsy, like maybe Wakakoyo could have recovered, but just whatever. [12:41:40 AM] see, this is only 4 minutes to the singing [12:42:12 AM] Daido (1-5, Juryo-6W) vs Chiyoo (2-4, Juryo-2W) [12:43:10 AM] these guys almost look like they're rushing through the pre-match ritual, like just hitting all the important points [12:43:35 AM] when they first take the line, they quickly put both fists down and rock forward, then back - not even really synchronized [12:43:58 AM] it seems obvious that the ritual is clearly to not start the match on the first approach to the lines [12:44:10 AM] the gyoji even behaves different - like he knows it won't be a match the first time [12:45:06 AM] Daido won - but I wasn't sure what happened. I lost track of which was which halfway through - two fat looking guys with the same colored skin and belts [12:45:33 AM] so that's kind of a small Juryo upset [12:45:54 AM] Tenkaiho (4-2, Juryo-2E) vs Chiyomaru (6-0, Juryo-6E) [12:46:35 AM] so I can tell by the rankings here, that they're giving Chiyomaru, who it appears has the lead at 6-0 alone, a solid opponent who is doing decent at 4-2. [12:46:48 AM] this is a big match. [12:46:58 AM] the best of the day, I'm sure. [12:47:05 AM] at least for Juryo [12:47:20 AM] although there's still two matches left, with some names that I recognize from Makuuchi [12:49:42 AM] Chiyomaru won, and advances to 7-0! Maybe Jesse will chime in about if this pretty much seals a promotion to Makuuchi? [12:49:51 AM] (lol, probably not right this second!) [12:50:16 AM | Edited 12:50:24 AM] Tamaasuka (3-3, Juryo-5W) vs Terunofuji (5-1, Juryo-1W) [12:51:07 AM] I'm guessing Terunofuji is going up already because he has a winning record at 1W? [12:52:27 AM] oh, here's some mind games at the line - each had one fist down, they both rocked forward a bit [12:52:37 AM] now they're up again and look like batters at the plate [12:52:59 AM] long bout [12:53:49 AM] Tamaasuka is on the defensive for most of the bout, and they tour the ring a bit, he ultimately does an arm flip on Terunofuji. [12:54:21 AM | Edited 12:54:36 AM] Asahiso (2-4, Juryo-1E) vs Homarefuji (0-6, Juryo-4E) [12:54:47 AM] I'm not sure why this is the last one, they're clearly setting Asahiso up for what should be an easy win [12:55:21 AM] both rikishi in green belts [12:56:31 AM] the camera is showing some fans with signs now for Asahisho. He picks up a HUGE handful of rice and flings it towards them. [12:56:40 AM] they're up in the balcony, so the whole thing is ridiculous [12:57:19 AM] Asahiso is clearly more aggressive, and in control. Chases him a bit and pushes him out. [12:57:39 AM] Yes, there's the people with the sign again - clear the rice Asahiso threw never actually left the ring :) [12:58:16 AM] here's the transition to Makuuchi, looks like they are announcing the rikishi and they're walking around the out of the ring [12:58:21 AM] oh yeah, Gagamaru! [12:58:51 AM | Edited 12:58:55 AM] they all have these big ornamental rugs hanging from their fronts like an apron [12:59:05 AM] Shouhozan! [12:59:32 AM] Kotooshu [12:59:38 AM] this isn't all of them [12:59:44 AM] Goeidou, the crowd likes him [12:59:56 AM] yeah, no Hakuhou [1:00:14 AM] there's a little dance move, and then they all walk off in a circlular line [1:00:26 AM] yes, this is your selection of rikishi for the day [1:00:57 AM] I have to say I'm enjoying this - anyone who wants to stay up until 3:30 AM I recommend it! [1:02:01 AM] oh, maybe that was the east, and this is the west? they're doing it again [1:02:06 AM] (Jesse?) [1:02:31 AM] oh yeah, these guys are coming from the "west" of the arena, which is to the right from the view of the camera, which is north looking south [1:03:11 AM] Endou got a big round of applause [1:03:29 AM] I didn't hear an announcement of Hakuhou....? are yokozuna special? [1:04:20 AM] now some synchronized brooming, I notice this is mixing the salt that is thrown back into the dirt within the arena [1:04:35 AM] the salt is thrown towards the camera, and the brooming was away from the camera [1:05:16 AM] ah, an announcement of Hakuhou, he's coming in with a special envoy [1:06:07 AM] I should be able to recognize these guys, but I don't watch enough sumo. :) looks like there are two other guys with him. he's on one with them and the other is blank of course because Harumafuji is out [1:06:17 AM] special ceremony for hakuhou [1:06:32 AM] clapping, open palm, arms up and down, and Timex everyone goes OHHHHH!!!! [1:06:42 AM] wide stance, slowly wobbling back in, crowd is impressed [1:06:52 AM] another timex OHHHHHH and the other leg OHHHHHHH [1:07:04 AM] and he stands up and walks off and the crowd loves it [1:07:14 AM] more clapping, and the crowd claps again [1:07:22 AM] now they're walking off, yay for Hakuhou! [1:08:11 AM] guy with a big scroll comes up and opens a big... oh, advertisement [1:08:25 AM] ha, something about tokyo chuunichi sports, odd combo [1:08:48 AM] and now I'm getting some ads on this ustream.tv channel [1:08:58 AM] yo gets some work done [1:12:11 AM] Kagamio (2-4, 14E) vs Osunaarashi (4-2, 16E) [1:12:42 AM] I recall Osunaarashi to be the Egyptian who we watched at Juryo. If so, he seems to have put on weight. I recall him being a thinnish thing. [1:12:59 AM] Maybe I'm thinking of someone else [1:13:58 AM] Yeah, I think this guy is Egyptian, and we only really watched him the last basho for the first time. he's doing well so far [1:16:06 AM | Edited 1:16:14 AM] Osunaarashi wins, being aggressive and pushing his opponent back, back, back, and out. He takes the cash [1:16:28 AM] first time I noticed that, must not happen in Juryo, Jesse? [1:17:10 AM] Kyokushuho (2-4, 13E) vs Satoyama (4-2, 16W) [1:20:37 AM] Kyokushuho is aggressive and chases until Satoyama gets low, and then they lock. They stop like that for a bit. A pause they both vie for a grip, then Kyokushuho takes him from the top and I think gets him over for the win. [1:20:43 AM] But it looks like there is a Monoii [1:21:00 AM] It was an arm flip, and the both hit pretty much the same time. The monoii is over. [1:21:47 AM] Satoyama for camera... it's on Satoyama... not sure what's going on. [1:22:12 AM] the next rikishi come up, I have no idea who won [1:22:43 AM] the internet says Satoyama won it [1:23:06 AM] Tokushoryu (5-1, 15E) vs Chiyootori (2-4, 12W) [1:26:06 AM] Chiyootori just pushes him out. [1:29:09 AM] Takanoiwa (2-4, 15W) vs Yoshikaze (3-3, 11W) [1:31:09 AM] Yoshikaze was aggressive, almost had him out, turned him around and took him to the other of the arena and out. [1:33:07 AM] Shotenro (1-5, 11E) vs Masunoyama (3-3, 14W) [1:34:32 AM] looks like a bit of a henka by masunoyama sends shotenro down flat [1:37:16 AM] Takayasu (3-3, 9E) vs Tokitenku (3-3, 13W) [1:38:35 AM] Takayasu pushes him straight back and out. [1:41:31 AM] Gagamaru (4-2, 12E) vs Tochinowaka (5-1, 8W) [1:41:40 AM] Gagamaru has a serious challenge here. [1:43:00 AM] they did a second scripted-looking fakeout - interesting [1:43:14 AM] this match is important to both [1:43:34 AM] gaga up to the face [1:43:37 AM] pushing back [1:43:42 AM] pulling down gaga wins! [1:44:04 AM] that would be with the whatever the pulling and pushing down method is [1:44:21 AM] so 5-2 is pretty good for gaga, but I would say expected at 12E [1:44:38 AM] Takarafuji (1-5, 7E) vs Fujiazuma (2-4, 9W) [1:48:18 AM] Takarafuji wins a back-and-forth battle that moves around the ring a bit. [1:49:04 AM] Sadanofuji (3-3, 10E) vs Kaisei (2-4, 6W) [1:52:39 AM] Kaisei aggressive, pushing, pushing, out. Fairly dominant. [1:53:42 AM] Tamawashi (4-2, 6E) vs Endo (5-1, 10W) [1:53:49 AM] the crowd knows that Endo is here [1:54:01 AM] there's this rumbling of yells [1:56:15 AM] serious now [1:56:19 AM] fakie up [1:56:23 AM] more slapping [1:56:47 AM] I thought I was ignoring the first fakie run, this could have been a second [1:57:19 AM] there is definitely some posturing going on here [1:57:50 AM] endo loses ground immediately, then turns it around and pushes tamawashi straight out [1:58:45 AM] Endo is already scheduled to meet Osunaarashi (5-2, 16E, Egyptian) tomorrow, so I'm sure he'll draw a pretty hefty opponent after that. [1:58:51 AM] Endo - Osunaarashi should be good too [2:03:03 AM] little break here in the action, but now we have Shohozan (5-1, 5E) vs Kitataiki (2-4, 8E) [2:04:51 AM] I cannot deny being a Shohozan fan, he's my kind of asshole. [2:07:41 AM] a bit of a staredown going on here, beyond the usual routine [2:07:49 AM] whoa, too fast there bud, back off [2:07:55 AM] nevermind, I'm gonna go slap myself again [2:08:55 AM] they're off [2:09:07 AM] oh, what happened, I think Kitataiki took it, but here comes the monoii [2:09:24 AM] I think shohouzan flipped Kitataiki out, but I'm not sure who landed first [2:09:43 AM] definitely, this is a monoii. the two wrestlers looking on. Kitataiki sneezes. [2:09:52 AM] this is a longer monoii than the earlier ones [2:10:02 AM] oh, hand gestures [2:10:13 AM] someone is explaining something he saw [2:10:30 AM] no replays on this feed, so just rooting for shohozan [2:10:40 AM] I heard his name... twice now. kitataiki now. not sure [2:10:50 AM] they zoom in on the gyoji - oh, it's a rematch? [2:11:08 AM] oh yeah, re-announcement, here we go [2:11:23 AM] re-Timex and everything [2:11:51 AM] Shohozan (5-1, 5E, Gold) vs Kitataiki (2-4, 8E, Green) [2:12:07 AM] they're even re-faking out [2:12:19 AM] It's easy for me to recognize Shohozan with that gold belt. [2:12:30 AM] here we go it seems they don't want to waste much time? [2:12:43 AM] oh, no, slapping some more [2:12:59 AM] this is easily a drinking game, by the way [2:13:56 AM] shohozan jumps off the line, a little misdirection, and pushes kitataiki out of the ring on the near [2:14:05 AM] yo cheers for Shohozan who advances to 6-1. [2:14:51 AM] Aoiyama (3-3, 3E) vs Takekaze (4-2, 4W) [2:18:36 AM] Takekaze pushes, then some more, then some more, and then almost out, and out. Solid win. [2:20:57 AM] Chiyotairyo (0-6, 2E) vs Kyokutenho (3-3, 5W) [2:21:38 AM] Chiyotairyo has an odd bandage on his back. there's a stripe across the top and then four bands going down in parallel from there. [2:21:48 AM] I think it's a bandage, otherwise it's a horrible sunburn. [2:22:07 AM] no, it's a bandage, and it looks like there's one across the top of his buttocks just below his mawashi [2:22:56 AM] Chiyotairyo pushes to the right, spins Kyokutenho around, and pushes him towards the camera and out. He needed a win, because he's 1-6 now at 2E. [2:23:36 AM] Okinoumi (3-3, 1W) vs Tochiozan (3-3, Komusubi W) [2:25:08 AM] This is where getting to the top ranks is just hard, huh? Each of these guys at 3-3, fighting for their kachikoshi. [2:27:11 AM] they're still faking each other out [2:28:52 AM] Tochiozan was aggressive. But okinoumi almost flipped him a couple times by the arm. [2:29:05 AM] Ultimately, Tochiozan got Okinoumi backwards and pushed him out. Goeido (4-2, Sekiwake E) vs Toyonoshima (3-3, 1E) [2:32:32 AM] they're making a big deal out of the faking out [2:33:07 AM] goeido aggressive early [2:33:25 AM] toyonoshima brings it late, and goeido looks like he might flip it around, but he doesn't. [2:33:35 AM] Toyonoshima wins it. [2:33:53 AM] that guy has a big belly, drinking his water there on the side [2:35:16 AM] Kotoshogiku (4-2, Ozeki E) vs Ikioi (1-5, 2W) [2:38:07 AM] oh, the crowd is enjoying these fakeouts [2:38:33 AM] and the salt throwing, they like that too [2:39:07 AM] Ikioi did a little henka and BAM Kotoshogiku is down. [2:40:37 AM] Kotooshu (4-2, Sekiwake W) vs Kakuryo (5-1, Ozeki W) [2:41:01 AM] I think this is a critical match for Kotooshu, who needs 10 wins this basho to get back to Ozeki. [2:41:37 AM] I think this is the last exciting match, barring an upset :) [2:42:09 AM] hmm... so they're coming out with ads while the rikishi are in the ring? [2:44:23 AM] they quickly lock up in the middle [2:44:33 AM] a little spinning around, Kakuryo is underneath [2:44:41 AM] he spins around and pushes out Kotooshu Kisenosato (4-2, Ozeki E) vs Aminishiki (0-6, 4E) [2:45:59 AM] GIMMIE RIGHT? [2:47:41 AM] Oh, Seiko ads now while they are slapping themselves [2:49:33 AM] more slapping, the production value is growing [2:49:47 AM] salt throwing, that's not rice, it's salt' isn't it? [2:49:57 AM] I'm embarassed a bit not knowing that. [2:51:00 AM] Kisenosato comes with some high shoves, gets Aminishiki back against the edge once towards the near side, and then again towards the far side, and then Aminishiki swings wildly with some missed slaps, and he steps out. Kisenosato wins. [2:52:00 AM] Hakuho (6-0, Yokozuna W) vs Toyohibiki (2-4, 3W) [2:53:18 AM] mochinko is another sponsor. Toyohibiki looks somber. [2:53:27 AM] This is probably how I would look if I was going to fight Hakuhou [2:54:05 AM] oh, more sponsors, bizuko, kakapa, oronamin C? [2:54:27 AM] Hakuho tests the two fists. [2:55:07 AM] He is like the Brian Urlacher of sumo [2:56:49 AM] they have a fakeout which the crowd loves, I think they are about to see a match\ [2:57:19 AM] they meet, hakuho backs off throws him down by the arm [2:57:26 AM] takes the big stack of cash [2:57:35 AM] yo falls asleep.
