    Number of matches to rikishi

Thanks that is sort of what I thought that the matches were set but with obviously more then 15 possible opponents it just nagged to be asked and answered! Thanks!
  6. Hi Was reading a book on Sumo today and came up with a question. There are 15 days per Basho. That would mean that the Rikishi wrestles 15 times correct? That said how are the 16 total chosen? Like for example in the Makuuchi level Wikipedia says this level is fixed at 42 Rikishi. Does that mean there is never more then 42 Rikishi in the Makuuchi rank and if so do all 42 wrestle in ever Basho or are the 16 chosen in some way? If all 42 wrestle I take it then in some Basho's that Rikishi's won't obviously face everyone so I take it the matches are randomly chosen? Are there also certain specific matches that are guaranteed such as say 2 Yokozuna's facing off. Just trying to understand better how the matches are selected.

    Sumo Online

Thanks for all the replies. Will check out the different options during the next Basho once I get home as still in Japan for few more weeks Also so folks know also NHK does have an English translation if watching on TV here but it does i guess depend on the hotel you are staying at and if the TV's allow for select of language on NHK so something to check out as I tend to flip over to English when watching on the tube being I don't speak much Japanese.

    Sumo Online

Thanks and no as just got curious about this recently as to if it could be seen from abroad. I know a lot of US shows can't be easily seen here in Japan as US broadcasters block it abroad at least via the normal .com websites so.....Good to know. Just so I know also as did not see it in the post but do they charge for this or is it free of charge to watch on the site? I ask cause my wife saw this Japanese show she wanted to watch and to watch it on the NHK website she would have to pay to watch so just double checking on this.

    Sumo Online

Hi Anyone know of a place to watch Sumo online from outside Japan? I can only be here for the January Basho so can only see that but would love to be able to watch the other basho's through out the year. At least at the moment I do not have TV Japan so have no source. Any ideas? I live in the US By the way in case the site makes a difference as I know some sites restrict video feeds to outside the country in question! Thanks Dave

Seeing Sumo for the first time in February

Hi Well how was it? I just went to my first Basho a few weeks ago myself here in Tokyo. We just happened to be in the area and the wife asked so said sure as been watching it on TV at the hotel daily. Now seems gonna be an annual event for us to attend :-D I'm actually in the middle of this book right now Sumo: A Thinking Fan's Guide to Japan's National Sport Not a bad book but he strays a little from the bare bones of what Sumo is but he covers some of it from a westerners viewpoint.
