Basho Talk - Natsu Basho 2016 +++ Spoiler Alert! +++
rzombie1988 replied to WAKATAKE's topic in Honbasho Talk
First: Yes, I'm a dick. Second: No they can't. Sponsors pay for kensho for specific bouts with an understanding of how the money will be split up. If a sponsor is offended by Hakuho's behavior they are perfectly free to move their money to other bouts, but once paid for it's not up to the NSK where the money goes. So they can't explain beforehand? lol -

People shouldn't give shots they can't take. Plain and simple. And you aren't exactly some innocent bystander, I saw the like. So save it. ^^There was no reason for that, especially coming from him of all people. Maybe when he grows up a bit he'll get it. But he's not going to, and I have no doubt he'll bring it up again by next basho. I seriously don't care. You want to ban me? Go right ahead. I'm not taking crap. There's 10 total people who actually post here(queue someone giving me some number for the smart comment). I assure you that a forum I check every 2 months is not a big deal for me. -

A 14-1 Yusho. No equivalent or runner up. Yusho. This "up for promotion" thing is fiction-some Oyakata said he would regard it as enough, as long as he beat all 3 Yokozunae. Some other Oyakata said something else. In any case, we are talking yusho, not a 14-1 jun yusho. I sincerely doubt anyone in the foreseeable future will be promoted without at least one yusho in his last 2 bashos. I really don't trust them with Kisenosato or Japanese hovering around that level. Just too much money on the line. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened had Kotoshogiku done a bit better last time around. I don't know if they would have said no if went 12-3. -

So besides not understanding yokozuna promotion criteria, do you also not understand how kensho work? So besides being a smartmouth are you also a dick as well? They can do whatever they want. If they say 20% of it goes to charity or something for his actions, they can make it happen. Not like Hakuho can go do sumo elsewhere. -

Hak with another small but extra shove today. He'll win the tournament but they need to start hitting his kensho so he gets the message. Ikioi with a mans throw on Kakuryu today. Thattaboy. -

Everyone isn't yokozuna and there are no threats of that coming to pass. It's not like the new criteria are so loose that there are new yokuzuna every third basho, they still have to be pretty damn good. Being against Kakuryu's promotion is fine, but it isn't his fault he was promoted under a different set of criteria. Kakuryu is solid and what he did to get promotion was actually impressive. I consistently root for him, partly because I dislike all the grief people put on him. Kisenosato is up for promotion if he goes 14-1. He could easily be a Yokozuna without winning a title. -

What's Kakuryu done wrong for you to lump him in with Futahaguro?Consecutive 14-1-D and 14-1Y meets the minimum requirement for Yokozuna promotion, and that's what Kakuryu did ... He's been told that about ten times by now, but rzombie1988 will continue to insist that he knows better than the Kyokai has for the last ~90 years. And this guy will continue to be a salty little wiener no matter what. This is the 3rd time you've mentioned this and it's gotten you nowhere. I know you love me but quit sniffing my mawashi. And there's a huge difference between winning two titles and a title plus a 14-1 -

Consecutive 14-1-D and 14-1Y meets the minimum requirement for Yokozuna promotion, and that's what Kakuryu did - which immediately places him well above the no-Yusho Futahaguro - and he's won another since promotion. Kakuryu ain't the best Yokozuna ever, that's for sure, but he ain't the worst either. Wasn't a fan of breaking the standard of the two titles in a row that was set and he hasn't really done much to justify it since, other then a henka title win(against an injured Terunofuji and with Hakuho/Harumafuji out). Also had two 6 loss bashos and two 5 losses bashos since his promotion. If everyone is Yokozuna then it is meaningless. I've been against his promotion from the start and will always be. -

Just caught day 3. Kaisei/Goeido was one of the worst sumo matches I've ever seen. Not even Kaisei B out there, it's Kaisei C. Hated to see Ichinojo beat Harumafuji as he's gonna start thinking this bullshit stalling stuff works. And I will be seriously pissed if Kisenosato gets a Yokozuna promotion without a tournament win. Haven't they learned from Futahaguro? Just saw Day 4 and Hakuho did another disgusting shove. I used to really like and respect him but I honestly root against him now. He's a soft bully now. -
BTW, if you guys need something to record a stream, I recommend Snagit or Camtasia. You can find both online through torrents. They have a video recorder and it's legit as simple as picking the area you want and pressing the record button. Snagit has crappier quality, Camtasia will have near perfect quality, but you will have to save the file as something for youtube or CD to get it down in size(it will be HUGE otherwise).

So from what I'm gathering - NSK did a free feed that Kinta was ripping from and they cut it out? Are they still doing the paid official sumo stream where everything is aired that was expensive?

Inquiry for FiveThirtyEight about Henka (split from Basho Talk)
rzombie1988 replied to skepticalsports's topic in Ozumo Discussions
You can go all day on bogus arguments as "_____ pulled a henka on _____ so now it's okay". I'm not a fan of henka's but as long as they keep on working people are going to use them unfortunately. I think they are cheap moves that aren't good sumo and ruin tournaments. I would not be surprised to see them happening more and more as people keep getting away with it. As for sports comparisons, it reminds me a lot of in cycling when someone goes down or has a bike problem and a competitor will speed up to get a cheap advantage ala Contador on Shleck at the Tour. -

Has this ever happened before or has anyone ever talked about it? Does the JSA have an official rule against it or have they made any statements on it? Obviously it would be seen as shameful and looked down upon, but if that person was willing to go through mae-zumo again and changed his name, maybe? I always wanted to ask this, so please don't flame. -

They can give Kisenosato all of the extra chances and lower standards that they want, but the fact is - if he can't win tournaments now, how's he gonna do it when he's Yokozuna? Ask Futahaguro about that. Does he really want to be the 4th Yokozuna? -

How long have you been watching sumo?Regularly since 2013. It's been 20 tournaments. Tournaments with 10 or more wins since then:Haumafuji - 13 Hakuho - 19 out of 20 Kakuryu - 12 Kotoshogiku - 5 Kisenosato - 14 Goeido - 5 Terunofuji - 5 in Makuuchi, 4 in Sekiwake or Ozeki Not super impressive. He also never racked up the 33 wins in 3 bashos since his initial promotion, but he's gotten 30 wins through 3 bashos twice. How many times you gonna edit that post, champ? Your initial response was all I really needed to know. Thanks! As many times as I please. -
Promotion/Demotion and Yusho discussion Haru 2016
rzombie1988 replied to Asashosakari's topic in Honbasho Talk
My guesses: Demoted from Makuuchi: Akiseyama, Kitataiki and Satoyama Promoted to Makuuchi: Osunaarashi, Seiro, and Nishikigi Demoted from Juryo: Kyokutaisei, Shotenro, probably Onosho. Promoted from Makushita: Ura, Tamaasuka, Sato The banzuke is seriously hard to do this time around with S-M5 mostly blowing it. My guess is: Hakuho Y Kakuryu Harumafuji Y Kisenosato O Goeido Kotoshogiku O Terunofuji Kotoyuki S Okinoumi Ikioi K Myogiryu Shodai M1 Kaisei Takarafuji M2 Aoiyama Ichinojo M3 Aminishiki Yoshikaze M4 Toyonoshima Tochiozan M5 Takayasu Takanoiwa M6 Tamawashi Tochinoshin M7 Sokokourai Honestly have no clue from M3 down, but there are gonna be a lot of unhappy campers. With all of the double digit losses, you could probably just switch Sekiwake to the mid-Maegashira's and be cool. -

FInal thoughts on the tournament: Hakuho - Went off on him already. Looked bad early, looked unbeatable mid to late and then cheapskated to victory. It's clear to me he's weakening. A strong champ would not have did what he did and he honestly stayed away from real technique for most of the tournament. Harumafuji - Not a good tournament likely due to injuries. Didn't look like himself and I didn't see the awesome tachi or wrap-arounds he is known for. Kakuryu - Kaku-who? He said he was injured and just looked lost in space for most of the tournament. He went back to his "better than Kotoshogiku as an Ozeki' days. Kisenosato - The choke artist choked again. He finally had a strong first half, which has been his biggest hurdle. The loss to Hak was fine but then losing again right after sealed the deal. At this point, I just don't see him winning a title. He hasn't done it in non-Hakuho tournaments, he hasn't done it when he's been in the lead and I'm just not sure when it can happen at this stage. I don't really know I would tell him if I were his coach. He literally had everything going for him with 3 yokozuna looking weak at times and he couldn't capitalize. He actually looked good and solid for almost all of the tournament and his win vs Kakuryu was one of the best comebacks ever. Kotoshogiku - He completely exploded once he fell on his face and is back to his old ways. All he has to do is go a bit higher and stop overextending, but he just doesn't learn. I really feel this was his only chance to ever become Yokozuna and he failed. I don't even know if it would be enough even if he were to win the next basho. Goeido - Looked really solid all basho copying Hakuho's techniques. I don't know where this Goeido's been but I hope we see more of him. He does need to make sure he touches the dohyo with both hands. Terunofuji - It's clear he's injured and wasn't himself. He really should just take a tournament or two off, get surgery and get fixed. He's too young and has too much potential to have injuries keep screwing him. I don't want him to end up retiring so early like Baruto. Kotoyuki - Was super strong and had the performance of a lifetime. Can he carry this over? Although I saw all of his matches, I didn't get to analyze them. Tochinoshin - Typical Toch unfortunately. Bad against the top dogs, good against the rest. If he's going to play the power game he has to pull from inside and under, not outside and over. Don't become an Aoiyama, become the Ozeki you can be. Ikioi - A lot of the usual from him. Nice win streaks off weaker guys but not much to offer against the stronger guys. He also goes on hot and cold streaks big time. He is guaranteed 9-10 wins at M4-M6. Sokokurai - He looked really good this basho. Nice technique and he showed even at a sick state he can hang at the top half of Maegashira. Hoping he comes back healthy next time and gets up to M3 or so. Shodai - Impressive. No Makemoshi's yet. He's got the challenge of his life next tournament. Aoiyama - Same issues as always but he hung in there with some of the big dogs. Kaisei - I'm not seeing any Kaisei love and I have a problem with it. He was very good this basho. He's out muscling people and he's grabbing under the belt. This is what I want to see Tochinoshin do. He's never had a KK past M4, so maybe it's time. Icihinojo - When he stalls, he falls. If he cuts the stalling out, we've seen that he can get be with the very best, though I do think his size carries him. Amuru - Has Takanoyama syndrome in my opinion. Skilled but needs to put on weight bad. He might be fighting for his Makuuchi life next basho. Akiseyama - Just wasn't ready this time around. He looked slow and wooden. Osunaarashi - He looked unbeatable early. If he can keep coming up with that belt work and that speed he will be an Ozeki. I liked what I saw from the Sandman. Overall thoughts on the basho - Exciting basho marred with Hakuho shenanigans. I liked the matchmaking as we got some more even matches earlier and still got the good matches later. Kisenosato vs Kakuryu was the best match and Kotoyuki was probably the MVP. Next basho should be good as we should have Kak/Haru/Teruno not injured and hopefully we will see Osuna tear it up. -

I feel like everyone should get a pass on henka's on Koto. This guy doesn't learn AT ALL. I felt bad for him initially but this should not be happening consistently to an Ozeki. I seriously have no idea how he is an Ozeki or how he got a title. None. Did you watch last basho? I actually didn't. I saw the first few days and got disrupted by days off. I was so far behind that it didn't matter anymore. But I know I've seen enough of him to know that it must have been a bad field to give him the win. -

*Shakes head* The man who is dirty to everyone all basho, pushing people off the dohyo, getting people injured and hitting people to the point of bleeding pulls a henka win for the title. Then does pity party tears after. The people who bought tickets and have been waiting for this one who were expecting a real Yokozuna battle are the ones crying. And I'll guarantee you Hakuho was laughing once the camera's turned off after what he pulled off today. "Hahah I did whatever I wanted all tournament, henka'd for the title then convinced everyone I was sorry by crying about it". Maybe he'll use his fat paycheck as a tissue to wipe his eyes with. No one could tell me that Hakuho couldn't have won legitimately today. He didn't need to do that. There's people here that didn't even think Harumafuji had a shot today. So this is now the second tournament in less than a year that's been decided by a henka, after the bullshit Kakuryu pulled on Terunofuji. The Sumo Association is going to have to get involved. Hakuho don't care, Kakuryu don't care, Terunofuji don't care and Kotoshogiku is so bad that he forces people to do it and never learns. Athough I didn't love Hakuho this basho, I would have had no problem if he won legit. Instead I felt like I was taken for a fool. Why should any of the top guys not henka every time at this point? I've been watching all of sumo since 2013 and originally the henka's were things you'd see Aminishiki or Kitaiki do, not the Yokozuna's. It's below them and makes them look weak and Hakuho looked weak today. Doing it to one of them is an insult. I just feel taken like a complete fool. I wanted a good match today. I wanted to see the two best in the world go toe to toe and to see whose the strongest. I even got some people who don't usually watch sumo to check the basho out and I'm really not looking forward to having to explain to people who haven't seen much sumo about what was pulled today. This stuff is bad for sumo and everyone was a loser today. -
