    Takekaze Retires

from taichiai.org, quoting Sports Hochi Takekaze decides to retire 39 years old veteran Takekaze, after having finalized his make-koshi on day 9, was faced with a drop to Makushita (which would have been all but certain with a 9th loss). Yesterday he said “I didn’t get here alone so I cannot make the decision alone”, but apparently he consulted with the powers that be, and came to the decision to retire. Takekaze joined sumo in Natsu 2002 as a Makushita tsukedashi. He made his debut in Makuuchi in Haru 2003 and had no less that 590 wins there. Takekaze owns a kabu, and will remain in the NSK as Oshiogawa oyakata. It is not clear as yet whether he will retire immediately or at the end of the basho. a link to the source material at Sports Hochi (in Japanese)

    Acceptable Ozeki Record?

If Yokozuna rikishi don't consistently achieve a certain number of wins during a basho they start hearing the whispers (or not so much whispers) about retirement. What about Ozeki? At what point does an ozeki need to up his game? What's that consistently reached acceptable number of wins for an ozeki? I've heard the number is 10 wins, but I don't recall where I heard that. Just to give some data to look at, here's Goeido's record since his ozeki promotion before September 2014 basho. For these purposes I'm using "record equivalents," where an actual record of 7-3-5 is the same as 7-8. What I found is that in the 26 basho since his promotion Goeido has finished 7-8, 8-7, or 9-6 17 times (65%). Four times he's been worse than 7-8 (15%), 5 times he's been better than 9-6 (20%). Details below. Is a consistent 8-7/9-6 good enough to remain ozeki (obviously I guess it must be) or is an ozeki really supposed to win more. And what about the other ozeki? Goeido's details: 1-14 3-12 4-11 5-10 7-8 - 3 times 8-7 - 8 times 9-6 - 6 times 10-5 11-4 12-3 - 2 times 15-0 Goeido in Sumo Database http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=6468

    Acceptable Ozeki Record?

It was intended to be a general question with no period attached. I assumed people would just talk about now, current rikishi and those to come. It wasn't intended to start historical research or massive statistical modelling projects, just get opinions.

    Hatsu Basho 2019 Discussion [SPOILERS]

I use the link button all the time, works fine. I suggest that if you just want to put a URL up do what Jakusotsu and Gurowake said. If you want to make text into a clickable link, highlight the text, push the link button, paste the URL into the box and click ok (or whatever it is). You can also put your cursor where you want the text link to appear, click the link button, fill in the URL and the text you want to click on, and click ok (or whatever it is) @yorikiried by fate

    Acceptable Ozeki Record?

    Depends on the school. In my area schools C- ends at 70 and F begins at 59. 70% of 15 = 10.5 and 59% of 15 = 8.85 (fail!)

Haven't noticed this, but wasn't there a toe(s) injury among Hakuho's recent issues? If so, maybe he's trying to get blessing on them?

I count it as 7-8 because that's how I understand the banzuke makers consider it.

    Acceptable Ozeki Record?

A thing to keep in mind - the old "rule of thumb" for ozeki promotion is (IIRC) 33 wins over 3 basho - an average of 11 wins/basho. There's no requirement to win a basho, just get the wins in a sustained fashion.

    Hatsu Basho 2019 Discussion [SPOILERS]

I've realized the end was near for a while now, but I had similar thoughts after that match. One match is only 1 match and it's always possible he could get his KK, but lacking that I'm with those who would be surprised if he finishes the basho or doesn't retire immediately after. Complicating factor - people were so hot to get him to Yokozuna, how long would it take to overcome their reluctance to give him that push if things continue badly, assuming he doesn't take that step himself.
