    Tanabata wishers

It’s Tanabata and time to write down your wishes. The rikishi's wishes were posted on the Dolphin's Arena's (where the Nagoya basho is held) front entrance, in their own handwriting. Terunofuji "Please let me get through the 15 days safely" Takakeishou: "Yusho." Shoudai "Escaping Kadoban." Mitakeumi : "4th yusho." Tochinoshin "World peace." Chiyotairyuu "I want a Rolex Daytona!" Ichiyamamoto: "Hachiyamamoto (8 yamamoto instead of 1-yamamoto, alluding of course to the eight wins he needs for a kachikoshi..) Akua: "I want to eat as many sweets as possible.." Preparations of the masses- July 2022

Abi had 7 bouts at home today, facing Makushita opponents and going 5-2. He is facing the Yokozuna on day 1 (unless he isn't..). "It's the Yokozuna- he is technically better and stronger than me - strategy won't help much. All I can do is hit with all my might, and do my best to take advantage of anything that comes my way. I will not give up till the end," he said. He got his makekoshi on the final day last basho. "Of course, part of it is that I'm not stroganoff, but my opponents have got me figured out. I need to change something. I'm going in too high," he added, checking out old videos of ex- Chiyonofuji and ex-Kisenosato who also went in high to see if he can learn something from them.
  7. As promised, degeiko has resumed today after two years and three months. Takayasu arrived at Oitekaze beya. He is the only sekitori at his heya , so not much to train with there. That was made quite obvious last basho when the lack of real training was quite conspicuous. OT0H, Oitekaze has quite a few sekitori. He arrived at eight thirty in the morning, doing shiko and other fundamentals. Then, he entered the ring and faced the Oitekaze guys for some sumo. Komusubi Daieishou, Tobizaru, Juryo Daiamami and Daishouhou -all types of rikishi. !8 bouts, won 11, facing Daieishou for the last consecutive nine bouts. Takayasu came to Oitekaze for the first time since he was an Ozeki. "Brings back fond memories..Really. After all, it's really good to face some sekitori, and I am very satisfied. My spirit is heightened and it's great to face guys with different personalities. It's a great learning experience and I would like to thank everyone for their efforts. I have been looking forward to this for so long, and the atmosphere was quite cheerful. I will be upping my pace for the remainder of the possible degeiko days (17). I plan to visit many heyas and go all out and check out the new Nishonoseki lodgings and maybe have a chance to train with the Oyakata again.. I plan not to repeat last bashos mistakes (unprepared) and arrive on day 1 in the best condition possible and cruise through all 15 days safely." he summed.

Should have read "looking forward to facing his good friend Nishikifuji this basho." No copyright trap, just screwing up more and more day by day. There is no copyright to infringe upon, as I am translating stuff. Well, attempting to anyway. Sorry about that. And Scott has full permission, he's a nice guy -too bad I let him down as well..

Invite for GTB- July (Nagoya) 2022- 155 entries - RESULTS!!

    5 bashos or less.
  11. It's that time again. Again, apologies for last basho's entry page problems. Hopefully, that is all behind us, or at least beneath us. One thing we've learned, again - there is absolutely no reason to delay your entry. Nothing is going to change from today till then. It's a fun game, please play. Drring driiiing. Nobody home. This is a formal invitation to play the "Guess the Banzuke" game!! 25 years, 145 bashos. Please play. Gluten-free. Game rules: Guess the Banzuke. Simple. You get two points for a bulls-eye and one point for just getting the rank right. You get no points for whining about the Ozeki. Tiebreakers - Most total guesses, then we check the banzuke backwards - getting the lower half right will be important. The most correct guesses in the last ten places will win the tiebreaker. If still tied, we go up a ranking at a time like a penalty shootout. If still tied, I suggest the best bribe wins. Preferably a week at some cool resort where they have drinks with umbrellas, and not vice versa. It's up to you to check if you are on the list of entries. It's going to be your fault if you don't notice that your entry went missing in the Internet void. No late entries will be expected or accepted. Those are the rules, and the rules will never be changed. Just like the dohyo will never be lowered and Enhou will not grow taller.. For rules, standings and the additional refresher course for the new shinpan which will never happen: http://www.dichne.com/Guess.htm For the nifty entry form, which will hopefully do what it's intended to do this time: http://sumodb.sumoga...b/GTBEntry.aspx For the "new" archives: http://sumodb.sumoga...gtbarchive.aspx See if you are on the entry list: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/gtb/GTBEntryList.aspx Deadline: Monday, June 20 2022 at 18:00 GMT ("Gyoji Mustn't Tie!!") - PLEASE NOTE-THIS IS ONE WEEK BEFORE THE OFFICIAL BANZUKE ANNOUNCEMENT!! Special thanks to Andoreasu who runs it, Doitsuyama who automates and maintains it and to the VAR for showing the right part of the bout in question.

Isegahama judging chief on the Ozeki camp: "I hope they don't do sumo that shames the Ozeki rank. They should man up and do Ozeki sumo, " he said. All three Ozeki face tough opponents on day 1. "Truth be told, I'm not expecting anything from them.. It's been like this for a while now-I'd say a year. Ozeki is the rank closest to Yokozuna. I want them to properly do their own sumo and aim for Yokozuna. I'm pretty sure they want that as well, but the results don't show that.. I want them to rediscover their own sumo. As for Wakatakakage and his Ozeki promotion chances, he wasn't looking that great last basho. He has to get more stable results. As for Asanoyama, well, Sandanme is Sandanme. He should just seriously do his own sumo and I think he'll be fine.." said Isegahama Oyakata.

Preparations of the masses- July 2022

I'm glad you asked-he is returning form a fractured rib injury and has been training. He faces his good friend Nishikifuji the newbie on day 1. "We've been friends since high school and have faced each other numerous times, so I'm really glad," he said. They grew up together and he even slept over at Nishikifuji's place, as he was living at a dormitory at the time while Nishikifuji lived in his own house. "His mother took care of me back then and I am grateful," explained Ounoshou. He trained at home today against three Makushita rikishi and was 22-3. "I have been properly doing what I should be doing," he divulged. He was injured last basho on day 5 in his bout against Takakeishou. '"As we fell, he hit my ribs with his knee. I was afraid of possible internal injuries so I took the rest of the basho off. At first the pain was so intense I had problems lying down, so I sat.. Every time I coughed or sneezed or laughed the pain was excruciating. I even slept sitting down at times," he added. He slowly got better and by the time the degeiko commenced at the beginning of June he was ready to go. He also lost 10 kilos at some point and now weighs around 160. "It doesn't matter who I'm facing, I will do my best and if I can concentrate day by day I think I will do well," he summed.

Addendum- Kiribayama also spoke about his weight. "I'm about 140 kilos. Should I up it to 145? Looking at my Oyakata (ex-Kirishima) he was quite well built and around that weight. I don't see any point in needlessly putting on weight. Watching his old bouts, I'm convinced I don't need to put on any more kilos.. I will gambarize while aiming to be like my Oyakata in his active days (muscles and all). I'm not there yet, but I hope to get there," he said.

Preparations of the masses- July 2022

Daieishou is in full training mode. "It goes without saying that I am aiming upwards and I truly want to get there, but I've only had one double-digit win basho (on the way up..) now, so.. I don't want to rush things and hope to go about the basho as usual," he said. He hasn't arrived in Nagoya yet and is training at the heya's location in Saitama. Today he faced Endou, Tobizaru, Tsurugishou and Daiamami for 15 bouts. "I think I'm training well. It's hot in Nagoya so I will be monitoring my body properly, " he added. This will be his second basho as a sekiwake. The first time around he went 5-10. "I planned on going about it as usual but I was overthinking things, I guess..The difference between then and now is that I am still planning on going about it as usual but I'm already used to that feeling, so this time it's going to be different," he said in closing. Does anyone else sense he may be going about it as usual?

Preparations of the masses- July 2022

Kiribayama is aiming for a third straight double-digit win basho. "The long awaited degeiko was great. It's going to be a bout a day so I will be properly doing it. I'm properly thinking of doing my own sumo, win or lose. I was able to face many types of rikishi doing all kinds of sumo- oshi, tsuppari ,etc. and I managed to deal with each one of them. Today i had my usual 15 bouts or so against the young ones," he said.

Magaki - Hakuhou will be throwing the ceremonial first pitch at the Tokyo dome at the Giants -Yakult game on July 7th, two days from now. This will be the first time in 14 years that such a ceremony occurs at the Tokyo Dome. "I'm really nervous," quipped MH. He has already done that back in 2008 in the opener between the Giants and the Dragons and has been identified as a Giants fan. He threw a 120 kph pitch for a perfect strike back then. "I wanna do that again," he said back then when he was 23 years old. Now he will..

Preparations of the masses- July 2022

Tamawashi trained at home and is aiming for the fourth straight basho where he gets a kinboshi against Terunofuji. He is the fifth rikishi since the Showa era to get three straight kinboshi from the same Yokozuna. The last time that happened was way back in '57. "I'm certainly looking forward to that.." he said with certainty. He trained against two Jonidan rikishi, then proceeded to doing squats while picking both of them up and coming up with all sorts of ingenious ideas for an hour. "My tachiai speed is lacking so I'm aiming to improve that. I'm always going for doing 'feelgood' sumo. I'm not that skilled, so if I can utilize my power the wins will follow. Shouhouzan retired? We used to train a lot together. I spoke to him on the phone and he told me he is now relaxed and asked me to gambarize. He planned on continuing till he was 40, but I feel I will continue as long as I am able to make the fans who come to watch me happy with my own brand of sumo. I want to get another yusho for my kids.. " he summed.
