Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2020

Yokozuna Kakuryuu has not started doing sumo in training, with nine days to go till the basho starts. "I feel I better start getting back in shape a bit.. I'd like to get back in shape, and like I always say, when I enter I hope to get a good result.." he said. He talks about life at home with nowhere to go. "I'm mostly putting the kids (three) to bed. I do what needs to be done whenever my wife is too busy.," he explained. He now spends a lot of time at home. A LOT of time. He is famous for following many sports, foreign and local, on TV. "I haven't been watching much at home lately, as whenever I turn the TV on, the kids want to watch their favorite shows," he said. (Psst.. get another set. You can afford it..) Wild prophecy: The 2 Yokozunae shall not be entering.. entering.. entering..

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

Kiribayama is doing his best to put on some weight. He added 3 kilos and now weighs 138 kilos. "I used to like to eat this and hate to eat that, but now I've gotten used to it and can eat anything.. At first I couldn't eat natto because it had a terrible smell but I've been eating it for the last year. The Yokozuna (Kakuryuu, arrived at the heya after his oyakata died and the old heya folded)) eats it daily. I've heard it's good for the body. I need to add 10-20 kilos," he explained. He went 6-9 last basho but did beat Takakeishou and Mitakeumi. "It was great fun. I couldn't believe I actually beat an Ozeki.. After facing the Yokozuna and Ozeki, I was able to be less nervous and calmly do sumo. " he said. Today he faced the young guys of the heya (Kakuryuu has yet to do any sumo training) for 25 bouts. "I was makekoshi last basho, so I want to get a kachikoshi this basho. I haven't had two straight makekoshi yet (only once in his whole career not counting kyujo, five and a half years, 32 basho), so it's quite scary. I'd like to keep that in mind." he summed.

Mitakeumi is lamenting the fact that he can't go for degeiko. "Yes, I am more anxious than last basho. It's just that I've been doing it for a while now. No proper degeiko this time. I can't do sumo like I'm used to doing. I'm stuck doing the fundamentals. When we're on jungyo I can't find much time to do them, but now that I'm at the heya all the time, I can seriously do them," he said. He has been skipping rope and can do a minute straight with all of his 172 kilos, doing three sets. "My body still feels heavy. I've started doing sumo today and I feel a bit of the sharpness emerging slowly." He faced some Makushita and under guys for 10 bouts. He's used to going to Kasugano beya for training, where he faces tough opponents. "Here, winning my bouts goes without saying and is expected. I know I have to stay in the ring and win them all, so maybe I'm adding more stamina this way.. It's also important to help develop the young ones. " He has been growing vegetables on the heya's roof, but the latest heatwave has ruined everything. "I gave up at some point. The tomatoes and stuff were coming along fine, but.. Growing the young guys and growing crop is equally difficult.." he said. He needs to get double digit wins this basho if he wants to be considered for an Ozeki run in November. "I was a rank and filer back in March (10 wins), so I can't really consider this as two straight double digit wins (11 last basho). It did build up my confidence, though. I definitely want to get two straight double digit wins now," he summed.

    Wait!! The weights!!

The rikishi were weighed among other things lately. The numbers are from August. Asanoyama up 2 kilos at 174. Hakuhou at 151, Kakuryuu at 155. Takakeishou up by 14 kilos at 183 (!!) . Lightest sekitori is Enhou at 92, down by 4. Heaviest is Ichinojou at 198. The average in Makuuchi is 156.9 kilos.

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2020

Takakeishou is getting ready for his "wedding basho." "I gave it my all when I was alone, so nothing concrete has changed, but the feeling that I want to get a good result is definitely there. Still, I'm happy to receive the support and blessings of my fans and of the people around me. Gained 14 kilos? I had stuff like my cellphone in my clothes so the weighing wasn't accurate.. I don't feel I put on any weight. I'm mostly eating horse meat for the proteins and fat. It's easy to eat and it's tasty. But not only horse meat - I'm eating all kinds of stuff well.." At training today, no sumo, but yes butsugari. Injured left knee that caused him to go kyujo last basho? "I think it's OK.. No degeiko? We have some scary guys at the heya so I want to prepare well and gambarize!"

And Shoudai, what is he saying after the 8-2 against Yutakayama? "I'm not in top shape yet - some fatigue remains. Yes, I've been hearing talk of an Ozeki run for me, but it hasn't made me too conscious about it at this point. I want to do my own sumo, and the results should follow - I don't want to do some strange sumo that will hamper my own style.. My body is still a bit rigid. What's important is that I am training and avoiding injury. The basho is very close and it's a bit unnerving, but I'm not that worried.." Takakeishou and other young stars have gotten married lately. "It's not like I'm too old to get married.. People around me should not worry about it. I have my own timing.." he summed, laughing.

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

Yutakayama and Shoudai were at it today at the heya. 8-2 in favor of Shoudai. "My condition is not THAT bad. I'm thinking I'm in better shape than last basho," said Yutakayama later. "Since the beginning of this year I have not been able to beat Shoudai. We had like a hundred bouts before last basho and I think I won maybe five.. He is crazy strong now. It's not at the level of 'he added power' - he has added POWER!" enthused Yutakayama. "He broke through his ceiling. I want to do that as well. I think if I really feel it deep inside, a change will come. It would be good if I can do that.. Lately, a lot of rikishi are taking turns shining in the limelight, and I'm thinking 'why not me as well?"" he added, hopefully, eagerly and enthusiastically.

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

The Flying Monkey Tobizaru trained today-fundamentals only. "It is very important to do the fundamentals in order to avoid unnecessary injuries and to build up my body. I'd like to start doing sumo soon." He donned his new mawashi today. "It's a pale blue color, not a deep blue one. It's something never seen before .." He has been quite excited lately with the promotion and all and the interest in him. "I am learning English. I have received many correspondences from foreign sumo fans and have been generating interest, so I decided to study English. I bought a textbook, but I seem to keep forgetting to open it.. I am getting better at speaking, as I have a friend who corresponds regularly speaks online to me in English ." He seems to be taking this quite seriously. At some point he had planned to embroider his zabuton with the caption "Flying Monkey" in English, but decided against it. "I do a lot of leg trips like ketaguri and kekaeshi and I plan to continue doing them during the basho. If I can catch (said it in English) the foreign fans' heart (said it in English as well) that would be cool!!" he summed. Come on everyone, let's write him some encouraging words where seldom is heard and the skies are not cloudy all day!!

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

Daieishou the third Sekiwake trained today with Juryo Daiamami and Daishoumaru. 19 bouts, 16 wins. "I worked on my tachiai, hitting thoroughly and using tsuki-oshi to attack." He has switched to a more balanced diet lately, eating a lot of vegetables. "I'm afraid of becoming ill so I have to balance my diet with vegetables. I'm eating vinegared onions at the heya. It seems good for the health. I'm not thinking about the pressure- I'll turn it into fighting spirit. I aim for the yusho in every basho that I participate. During training I can win even when I'm pushed back but it isn't that easy during a basho. I will do my best to do 100% of my sumo!"

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2020

Asanoyama trained with the 4 Makushita guys from his heya today -10 bouts. He usually starts going for degeiko at this point, but since degeiko is not allowed, he will have to do with this for the time being. Still, he was upbeat. "These guys are aspiring to become sekitori so it's a great incentive for them. I also did my best not to lose. My duty is to take these 4 guys and help them climb higher!" he said.

    Banzuke for Aki 2020

It also has to do with where they were ranked initially, as the banzuke puzzle unravels differently and accordingly, but yes, probably punished some more too..
  18. Drring drring..(Phones don't do dring dring anymore. Get with it, man..) Hakuhou : "Yeth?" Kakuryuu: "Hello boss. So, what do you have to say?" H: "Listen, we're not young anymore, but we're still wily. Did you see how I avoided facing Teru? I lost, limped emphatically, made my way SLOWLY around the dohyo to the other side, taking care not to take the short-cut through the dohyo like everyone else ever, grimaced a lot, and limped out noticeably. I made it so that even Stevie Wonder would notice my injury.." K: "So you faked it?" H: "Hush, man, do you kiss your mother with that mouth? Of course I am injured. I just wanted it to be obvious so when I announce my kyujo people wouldn't start speculating.." K: "But didn't you just point out how wily you are and used the word avoid?" H: "Me? Avoid? Never! " K: "Scroll up a bit maybe??" H: "OK, OK, what are you calling me about during my mah-jong session?" K: "I'm thinking of hanging it up. I'm having difficulties getting used to Michinoku beya and the Kiribayama kid won't let me be.. I'm too old for drastic changes!" H "And I'm supposed to do what with that information?" K: "Maybe you have some wily idea?" H: "How about you hang it up? It's time. You should move to soccer, but maybe not, seeing as you kicked a 160 kilo guy standing right next to you and missed him totally.." K: "Hey, that's not fair - he moved!" H: "Let us summarize and say we are a wily pair. We both got some extra rest, I guess.." K: "Speaking of guess, are you doing the GTB this basho?" H: "I think rikishi cannot go out at night and play GTB because of the virus and the need for social distancing.." K: "Oh, then Abi has probably entered already.. HAHAHAHAHA!!" H: "HAHAHAHA!! Good thing we're not rikishi, as we can play GTB as usual! GTB. Please play. Rules: Guess the Banzuke. Simple. You get two points for a bulls-eye and one point for just getting the rank right. You get no points for getting drunk in a bar and "not remembering anything" the next day, after your picture hits the tabloids. Tiebreakers - Most total guesses, then we check the banzuke backwards - getting the lower half right will be important. The most correct guesses in the last ten places will win the tiebreaker. If still tied, we go up a ranking at a time like a penalty shootout. It's up to you to check if you are on the list of entries. It's going to be your fault if you don't notice that your entry went missing in the Internet void. No late entries will be expected or accepted. Corona and sumo

Rikishi-kai representative Kotoshougiku visited Oguruma oyakata at the Kkan today, asking to lift the degeiko ban, citing the fact that sekitori that have only a few opponents to face at their heya cannot train properly. Oguruma answered that if even one of them contract the disease as a result, the whole basho will be in danger of being canceled. "We will be doing whatever the Kyokai decides, of course. Still, maybe they can allow degeiko during the odd months when there is no basho. We need to think outside of the box.." said Kotoshougiku.

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2020

Injured Yokozuna Hakuhou (right knee) has yet to resume training, raising fears he will not be ready for the basho. He prefers to be treated for the injury and heal completely, after undergoing endoscopic surgery in August. He is doing basic exercises but is far from doing the fundamental suriashi and shiko.

    Rikishi talk - Banzuke release

Houshouryuu, Asashouryuu's nephew, makes Makuuchi in 14 bashos, three bashos slower than his uncle."When I went makekoshi in my Juryo debut, I knew I wouldn't make Makuuchi as fast as my uncle. Still, it was pretty quick.. I want to get double digit wins and a sansho in my Makuuchi debut. My uncle managed only 9 wins? I did not know that.. I will do my best not to lose by being slower than my opponent. I grew up watching my uncle's bouts on TV. His bouts were exciting to watch- he would suddenly light up and become full of energy. I want to be like him. I am extremely afraid of him. I want to be praised by someone like him.." Asashouryuu himself congratulated him through his shisho. "He is constantly in his uncle's shadow so I guess he really wanted to be promoted as quickly as possible.." added his oyakata Tatsunami.

    Rikishi talk - Banzuke release

New Makuuchi Tobizaru, Hidenoumi's brother, shikona means Flying Minkey, 131 kilos, 1.75 meters: "I will show fun sumo. I'll have fun with my opponent , and hope to do speedy and tricky sumo! I've finally arrived at the starting point of being a rikishi (3 years in Juryo..). I hope my brother will make it back to Makuuchi soon (now the 11th brother pair to have made it to Makuuchi) and that I'll be able to persevere here so we can both battle in Makuuchi!" he said. He is relatively small in stature. "Well after Enhou (1.69 meters, 92 kilos) has been doing so well in Makuuchi, being small is no longer an excuse for losing.. He is not my rival, but I really don't want to lose to him." Daieishou, new Sekiwake : "Lately, that has been my target. I'm thrilled to be able to get promoted. " He is the first Saitama boy to make it to Sekiwake in 57 years, since Wakachichibu, beating Hokutofuji to it. "I heard about that and I am deeply honored. I'm happy I beat him to it.. Ozeki? As long as i am active, I want to gambarize and go higher. I'll be going at it showing my burning desire!!" Terunofuji, ranked Maegashira 1: "I was promoted higher than I expected, so now that I'm here, I feel the responsibility and must gambarize! I started training immediately after the basho was over, as ex-Aminishiki told me that the minute a basho is over, the next one begins.. I've been conscious of that these last 1-2 years and have acted accordingly. Only injured people can understand this, but if you rest for 2-3 days, the pain usually gets worse. So in order not to rest too much, I immediately start training for the next basho. I don't celebrate much. I'm happiest when I train with weights.. I will be facing the joi this basho, but I don't really mind who my opponents are. All I can do is believe in my abilities and hit hard. My aim for next basho is for a kachikoshi, then double-digit wins and hopefully to do even better than that.. I am not conscious of returning to Sanyaku or going higher- I'll just concentrate and take it day by day. If the results will follow, excellent.. I was happy with the yusho, as I was able to somewhat repay the people who supported me during my dark times. I need to gambarize next basho as well.."

It's official-the Aki basho is on as planned with a limit of 2500 spectators a day.
