Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

Kiribayama trained at home today, 19 bouts against makushita and under. He has been watching his Oyakata's (ex-Ozeki Kirishima) videos lately. "He was strong when he got the mawashi. He keeps trying to teach me how to 'tsuri ' but I can't get the hang of it (a good one there..) Man, the Oyakata is awesome.. I would really like to do that at least once." As Kakuryuu is sidelined, he can only train with the lower rankers. He will probably face some joi at his rank of M5 this coming basho. "No one will say anything if I lose because my opponents are tough. That's my feeling. Since my opponents are strong, it's OK if I win or lose, I think," he said.

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2020

Kakuryuu is probably out of Aki "I haven't had this kind of experience (no training) before. My body is not ready at all," he said. He did lend his chest to Kiribayama, but that's about it. He will discuss this with his Oyakata and decide soon.

33 years old Takarafuji (M5) is chugging along. He was 5-10 last basho. "Man, I hate losing.. I feel I want that too...." he said, alluding to 35 years old Okinoumi's kachikoshi at Komusubi. Usually during jungyo they go to the gym together to train. The last time he was in sanyaku was back in September 2016, when he was Sekiwake, ended 4-11... "Of course, I am thinking of this relentlessly," he said of a possible sanyaku return.

Cup holder Terunofuji trained today- 11 bouts against Terutsuyoshi, Takarafuji, and others. "When I'm pushing forward too eagerly I fall down.. It's important to maintain balance." He is watching movies, reading books and doing some weight training, while taking supplements and protein. "I am doing what I am able to do. All I can do is go all out this coming basho," he added.

Takanoshou actually talked about sumo as well, it appears. "I will do my best to get a good start this basho to be able to grab the chance of a sanyaku promotion. I had a few bouts against Takakeishou (yesterday) and I think I won three-four of them. I had him pushed back a few times and it gave me a lot of confidence. " He spends a lot of time watching DVDs of his own bouts. "In the second half of the basho I tend to get weak and get marched out easily. I will brace myself and gambarize so that this will not happen in Aki.." he promised.

I'm not saying that. Sometimes, someone simply has no interest in online games. And sometimes, that someone, bored to tears more than usual, MUCH more than usual, tries it out and discovers he actually likes it. I've discovered a lot of stuff way past their expiry date. I'm willing to bet you that is exactly what happened.

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

I've heard of people getting hooked and playing for days. I'm pretty sure he suddenly had a lot of spare time on his hands and got into it. Most of us under lockdown found something new to do. I started knitting and ice-sculpting.

I don't think a sekitori has much spare time for this, usually. As it is now not usually and the guys have oodles of spare time, he probably took it up.

Terutsuyoshi at is career highest rank of M3: "I hope to face my bouts concentrating on each day's bout and not getting over-eager.. I'm not thinking too much about sanyaku, I'm just thinking of facing each day without getting injured and gambarizing in order to win.."

    Corona and sumo

Shibatayama tells us that the sick rikishi's fever has gone down. People who came in close contact with him underwent tests and the results will be known soon. At this time, none of them have shown any symptoms. "It's important to contain this to the heya.." summed Shibs.

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2020

Ozeki Asanoyama trained with the lower rankers of his heya today, doing around 15 bouts. "I'm doing them seriously one at a time and sweating well, while in attack mode all the time," he said. He is from Toyama, where the water is said to be pure. Recently, a friend sent over a lot of Toyama water, and he is drinking it abundantly to hydrate. "I'd rather drink Toyama water than sake.." he said. He has been discussing health issues with his personal trainer, and has been eating between meals as well, drinking smoothies daily. Mustard spinach, regular spinach, ginger, celery, bananas, mandarins, apples, oranges and watermelon, mixed with yogurt and honey- all this to overcome fatigue. If he's still hungry, he eats sweetened nuts. This internal purification of his body is uplifting his state of mind. Me, a cheeseburger would be nice.

Maegashira 1 Takanoshou (at his highest career rank, aiming for sanyaku) has absorbed himself in "Fortnight", playing against his young heyamates, and tells us about it. "Fortnight is a survival game so if you don't concentrate, you get clobbered. I'm pretty sure playing the game has improved my concentration," he said. Today he faced current Makushita and ex-Makuuchi Takagenji and others at the heya. "I guess I had 15-20 bouts.." he said, not showing much concentration, ne? Heya-mate Ozeki Takakeishou got married recently and so did his own sister. "I'm wishing for good fortune for myself as well this coming basho and hope to get a good result.." he summed.

    Yoshikaze situation

I think this warrants a separate thread, as Yoshikaze's situation is pretty bad. Probably kyujo, far from fit, drop to Makushita, and he'll retire. It's not me speculating, but some online papers are pretty sure this is going to happen. We'll know in a couple of hours if he's out of the basho, and if he's out, probably sooner than later, an intai announcement.

    Corona and sumo

A Makushita and under rikishi has been tested positive. No mention of which heya. The rikishi fell ill yesterday in the afternoon and was tested positive at the local hospital. He is in hospital since today. Anyone who came in close contact with him and even heya members that didn't will undergo tests.no other heya members have shown any symptoms so far. "We don't know how he contracted it. It was a Sunday, so I really don't have any specific details. He is a member of a very large heya so we need to find out how it happened and hope he will be the only one affected, as the basho is nearing and this is worrying.." said Shibatayama PR man.

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

Takayasu did not do any sumo today, but seems to be in good shape. He did some fundamentals though, working up a sweat. He has been doing sumo on a daily basis since the banzuke was released, training against.. well, you know, ex-Kisenosato (Araiso Oyakata). "Man, his left hand grip is scary..The keiko is excellent. We can't go out to train at this time, so I am thankful to have him as my training partner.. " He got married in July and his wife is assisting him in his effort to return to sanyaku. "She tries her best to cook me healthy meals so I can lose my excess fat. A lot of proteins. As a result my body is moving better than before. My sumo sense is returning as well. It seems my wife is learning how to make healthy food, and it is very tasty. I'd like to be able to repay her by doing well. I want to return to sanyaku.." He has been greatly inspired by Terunofuji's yusho. "I have been greatly inspired by Terunofuji's yusho. He's faced much greater hardships than I have. A yusho by someone like that is a great stimulus. It makes me feel maybe I'm next.. I'd like to totally gambarize one more time and aim upwards and will train hard for my fans who are rooting for me. " He is going to be a father soon. "The birth should take place at the beginning of next year. I need to gambarize even more.. For the sake of the child, I'd like to join forces with my wife and do my best." He intends to resume training with ex-Kisenosato tomorrow. "I'll be going at it while taking care of my body to avoid injuries. I'd like to show powerful sumo for the 15 days of the Aki basho and make my fans' support worth their while!!"

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

Maegashira 10 Kotoekou had his first double digit win basho last basho and got a nice 6 rank boost. "I was able to move before my opponents and take control of my bouts. It's all about attacking first. I hardly lose now by getting pushed back. The only way to fight my weight disadvantage (131 kilos) is to get into my sumo mode as quickly as possible. " His local Fukuoka fans have written a song about him that has become popular among his fans. No Kyushu basho this time. "All kinds of people have heard it - If everyone can memorize it, it will definitely rouse the fans and that would be nice..", he said.

Preparations of the masses- Aki 2020

Veteran Komusubi Okinoumi had 10 bouts with Makushita rikishi today. "I'm resting here and there so as not to get injured. I feel business is as usual. The rest will happen during the basho, and that's it.. " He had his first kachikoshi as a sanyaku last basho. "I was able to generate power in a good way. In the past I had this voice inside me telling me I can't win. Now I'm going about it much more calmly. It's OK if I lose. Feeling that, I'm OK with whatever happens. Overthinking about what may or may not happen leads to unnecessary fatigue. If I'm bad, I lose, it's as simple as that. I am getting old, but I make up for it with my ability to concentrate. It's not about the power, it's more about the concentration. I think this new state of mind helps my body move well. It's all about the way we think, isn't it? I don't really know if I can preserve this state of mind during the next basho as well. It's difficult. Nevertheless, I shall gambarize, aiming for double digit wins with my own rhythm. All I can do is ride the wave of my confidence.." he said. Wow.

    Favorite TV Series

"Upstart Crow" is of course on my list (two asterisks..) -my current top British comedy. I watched "Veep" in real time- a souped up "Thick of It" -same Ianucci. My list consists of current running shows only-of course "Peep" was one of my favorites while it was alive. We have "Back" now with the David and Robert to keep the vibe rolling. "Inbetweeners" was watched keenly- we now have "The First Team"-same writers. "Ghosts" is on the list- "Good Omens" was sadly discontinued, or at least no talk of a season two.. "Father Ted"-did not click with me. But neither did "Breaking Bad", so..
