    Preparations of the masses-Nagoya 2013

I'd like to hear more about Goeido's upcoming ozeki run. He only needs 16 wins in Nagoya to make it, right?

    Atsuta shrine dohyo-iri

The surface of the dohyo is covered by sand. That's why we get the occasional slippiotoshi win.

Sokokurai is smiling in basically every picture I see of him. This is a guy who is genuinely happy to be back in sumo.

    Picture Banzuke Nagoya 2013

Awesome. I really like the photo banzuke. That picture of Takayasu is classic.

    Nagoya 2013 Banzuke, all divisions

That's an interesting point. Is there a rule against identical sounding names?

    Nagoya Basho Past Winners

And according to http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=29677'>this thread, ex-Asashio was one of the Oyakata All-Stars.

    Nagoya 2013 Banzuke

You're all just jealous of his magnificent tan.

    Nagoya 2013 Banzuke

After Myogiryu at M1, Shohozan was the highest ranked maegashira that got his kachikoshi. Behind him in the banzuke were Takayasu, also at 8-7 from M5, and Takekaze at 9-6 from M6. Do you promote Takekaze over Takayasu and Shohozan instead? Tokitenku's jump to komusubi from M8 surprises me more. He posted double digits, but one win was by fusensho. I guess all that matters is the final score, though.

    Preparations of the masses-Nagoya 2013

I agree with all your points! I don't know if he's yokozuna material, but I think he's certainly a talented and savvy enough rikishi that he could find a place in the sanyaku. But he's got to focus on his sumo and polish that finishing instinct.

Hooray, the singing is done. NOW DO YOUR KEIKO. I want a better showing from Ikioi in Nagoya.

    Yokozuna/Ozeki preperandum - Nagoya 2013

    Aren't we back to a Harumafuji zensho-yusho?

I bet he owes Kakuryu a lot of beer for that.

    Sumo World via iTunes

Is sumo world a monthly thing? Once per basho? How big are the typical issues? I'm with masumasumasu on this one; I'll buy pretty much anything sumo related.

    Yokozuna/Ozeki preperandum - Nagoya 2013

^^ What he said. But, if Kise can fight like he did last tournament on a regular basis, I can see him being an equal to Harumafuji. I never thought Haramafuji had the wherewithal to make a push to yokozuna, but he did it. Kise may surprise us eventually.

Is it common for gyoji to retire before reaching the Kimura Shonosuke?

    Apre-promotion pics-July 2013

Toiling away for years being the operative phrase. Sumo isn't the heart-warming story of the dedicated journey-man plugging away for years and finally getting his big shot thanks to his diligent efforts every day; if it were, the kyokai would have celebrated Kyokutenho's win with a massive ad campaign instead of issuing an apology for the tournament. No, it's all about the fast-rising stars that shoot up the ranks and the excitement of seeing how quick and how high they can climb before they burn out.

    Kakizoe Intai-zumo fixture

Ha! I have it! He reminds me of http://asianwiki.com/Ittoku_Kishibe'>Ittoku Kishibe.

Okay, that gyoji totally reminds me of an actor and it bothers me that I cannot figure out who!

    Jun-Yusho count

I thought it's just the runner up position, regardless of how close to winning the actually were.

    Juryo Promotions - 2013 Nagoya

Anyone know how old the current Shikimori Inosuke is? He looks older than the guy retiring, but taking a Wakakoyu to the face probably ages a person a few years.

    Odd or Interesting Sumo Names

He's the one. He's still officially listed at 167cm, though I think his actual height is about 160cm? Could be wrong.
