    Hakuho's dominance to continue?

And not if it's adjusted for differences in cultural exchange. Lacking a solid trading market for relative cultural values, we can erroneously substitute currency values into the equation. The tugrik is trading at 21.67 to the yen, so Hakuho's mongolian wins are currently worth about 1.85 Japanese yusho, and Haramafuji is trading an a measly 0.41 yusho, for a total of 2.26 yusho. On the face of it, Kisenosato's 2 yusho have generated roughly the same level of excitement as Harumafuji and Hakuho's careers combined, so these figures appear sound. Therefore, technically, Chiyonofuji has only 33.26 yusho in his kanreki dohyo-iri.

Hakuhou death THREAT, not thread, THREAT. OK?

Have they checked it against Takanohana's handwriting?

    Hakuho's dominance to continue?

Wait, are we giving up on Gagamaru for Yokozuna? I just got the t-shirts printed and everything...
  4. I think Moti would sport the Tastunami hair style best.

Not looking so unridiculous now, is it?

Much like Goeidou, I've got nothing.

    Basho Talk Kyushu 2017 (SPOILERS)

Maybe a scandal? Or even a double scandal? OMG, we could totally set this up! I know a guy...you'll recognize him by his scarf. Yeah, but Ikioi is a good counterpoint. He frequently lets up on his opponent at the tawari. It is really considerate of him, but the number of times he gets beat because he doesn't keep shoving his opponent is ridiculous.
  8. I think Tanahohana was behind it.

    Basho Talk Kyushu 2017 (SPOILERS)

And thus the real motive behind elaborately framing Harumafuji by staging a drunken assault becomes evident: to get off record as the unwinningest winner in all of Winsylvania! Tip your tinfoil hats, folks, because we've just cracked the case wide open!

    Basho Talk Kyushu 2017 (SPOILERS)

But that's not always the case, is it? I seem to recall Orora losing a match in the last few years against a (possibly the smallest?) rikishi where he was lifting the little guy out of the ring, but lost sight of the edge and stepped out and thereby lost. There were lots of editorial cartoons following the event.

I find it unlikely Ichinojo lost that much weight. Maybe he grew, instead? :)

    Ridiculous Predictions for Kyushu 2017

Hakuho is my obvious favorite and looks strong, but I'm pulling for a Goeidou yusho on this one. I mean, frankly, it cannot get much worse for him than last basho. (Or for me. Snorting sake is not recommended). I think that Goeidou's sumo was fine, but he lacked the high-stakes performance confidence that Harumafuji has accumulated due to experience. And so I predict this is the final seasoning that Goeidou required to settle himself down, and that he takes the Kyushu yusho and goes on a yokozuna run in January. I think it's his time.

    Basho attendance

I am happy that sumo is popular again. But I'm also sad because the Fukuoka tournament was my favorite tournament to attend because of its modest attendance; it was very nice being able to walk up on the day-of and buy box seats in the morning. The weekends were still impossible to get boxes, but the 10 weekdays were a breeze.

    Chanko-1 Grand Prix

Off topic a bit, but Kotooshu looks good. Would anyone new to sumo ever believe that he was a rikishi, and a good one at that? I mean, he was never a particularly hefty wrestler, but I wonder if he struggled to keep on what meager extra weight he had?

    Harumafuji Intai Speculation

Harumafuji should definitely retire. He's embarrassing Goeidou.

    Bearded gyoji/wrestlers

Apparently they used to be more common. From Wikipedia: "Bearded gyoji are very territorial sub-genus of sumo. As they grow, they establish social hierarchies in which displays of aggression and appeasement form a normal part of their social interactions. Bearded gyoji display a hand-waving gesture to show submission, and a head-bobbing display to show dominance between gyoji. The beard is used for both mating and aggression displays. Bearded gyoji can produce a mild venom, originating from primitive venom glands. Though generally harmless to rikishi, it is effective against the shinpan in establishing territorial dominance during a mono-ii. In the early 1900s, they were found throughout much of Japan in a wide range of habitats such as stables, karaoke bars, and stadiums. Today, bearded gyoji are extinct in the wild and may only found in captivity."

Basho Talk - Aki 2017 (SPOILERS)

I love Wakachiro's little self-slap ritual at 2:08. Something I'd expect to see in boxing or football, but it was hilariously out-of-place in sumo. Does he often do that, or was he just sending a warning to his opponent?

But it's quite good for Goeidou...
  22. I don't really know. My armchair observation is that the oshi guys tend to wear out quicker, as just being older really seems to slow them down and rob them of their power. The argument kind of presupposes that the 50kg he gained was only fat, which I'm not sure I'd accept. But I'm not sure we can look up that stat. His record against Takanohana was pretty give-and-take over their careers, and his record against Konishiki solidly improved in the latter part of his career. By that isolated observation, the extra weight probably helped him out? Or else the extra weight really hindered Konishiki. So I stand by my original, definitive response: I don't really know.
  23. Quite obviously a nod to the sumo forum there. After all, without our tacit armchair support, any sumo success would be impossible.

Actually, every time Hakuho beats someone really convincingly they award him two wins. I mean, how else could someone possibly make it to 1048?
