Rikishi Status Haru 2017 - D13 Late Withdraw
Benevolance replied to Fukurou's topic in Honbasho Talk
That's an important lesson to learn. -
Any updates on Teru's bandaged upper left arm and his record against the likes of Shodai at the Tokitsukaze degeiko today? Okay, I couldn't even type that with a straight face. But backing up a bit to discuss Goeidou...he shows occasional flashes of brilliance when he needs to, like his push for ozeki and his recent zensho, but he's then wrecked for the next two or three tournaments and essentially a no-show. Harumafuji is like that, too, but Asa's style is a very reckless, on-the-edge, sumo. He's going to get hurt. My impression of Goeidou's style is that it's pretty staid, much like Kise's, and he shouldn't be getting so banged up...but maybe I'm just not seeing it right. Or maybe he's over reaching his talents? And it never seems like any of his injuries are major, but there always seems to be something. Anyway, I'd really like Goeidou to get back to healthy, stay healthy, and show us he's a good, solid, double-digits ozeki. Especially now that Kise has moved up.

I'm glad he's finally set a deadline, but it's odd that he'd want to change anything at this point.

Apparently, he's relocated to Taipei. (and there was much rejoicing) -
You can't beat German efficiency.

Best ninja ever! The guy is so thin now, he could practically turn sideways and disappear. -

And as President and Secretary Treasurer of the Goeidou Fan Club, I only post when Goeidou instructs me.

Preparations of the masses -Haru 2017
Benevolance replied to Kintamayama's topic in Ozumo Discussions
Winning the yusho was simply a feather in the cap of an improbably successful career. -
Where ever they want; no Japanese rikishi can stop them.

Wasn't the Hatsu basho already a 15 day charity event? #becausewegotajapaneseyokozuna

The Original "If there were no..." In this case - Asashoryu
Benevolance replied to Hinerikeri's topic in Ozumo Discussions
I was unsure I was convinced of that, but I thought on it some more and now I'm not as sure I was as wholly unconvinced as I thought I was. Hakuho *is* kind of good at sumo and Asashoryu is a bit of an egoist. And by exiting how and when he did, he can still take pot shots at Hakuho and claim he was the better sportsman on Twitter. :) -
The Original "If there were no..." In this case - Asashoryu

And Asa's bar fight during the honbasho was staged by ex-Takatoriki as a puro-resu stunt. :) -
Fun fact one: because Kisenosato isn't a real yokozuna, since he didn't win back-to-back yusho's as declared by internet pundits, they were only able to obtain him a nerf samurai sword. Fun fact two: it's a pretty bitchin' nerf sword.
-
And when it was just Hak, they mostly complained that nobody was challenging him enough.
-
You think that's bad? With the bar obviously lowered so much by this probable Kise promotion, the entire top division is going to be ranked Yokozuna by May. Except for Tochinoshin, who'll be M4.
-
I don't think it's a matter of being into Kise, but acknowledging that he's done everything yokozuna-esque but win a yusho. And now that he's done that his tsuna seems inevitable. My guess is that, win-or-lose vs Hakuho, Kise gets a rope. Harumafuji and Kakuryu did much the same thing to get their promotions; both seized excellent advantage of a weak roster when the opportunity presented it. Kise's method seemed more like grinding out the top dogs until they came down to his level. Certainly the fact that Kise's the only guy at the top that isn't facing recurring injury problems is in his favour, and that's the iron man part of sumo. My mom says they care what I think.

The third loss will be a dropped mawashi.

It all depends on how you frame it. Kotoshogiku is a perennial sekiwake/komusubi talent that overcame all odds through sheer force of determination to reach the rank of Ozeki. Despite being forced to wrestle far above his actual level, he's fought tenaciously for years and ultimately broke the decade long japanese yusho drought, easing the burden for a new generation of young rikishi moving forward. When he does finally retire, he will retire having won a yusho and a long - though perhaps not highly distinguished - ozeki career.
