    Takanohana resigns

So, to sum up, the Czech government was putting diplomatic pressure on the YDC to get Takanohana ousted from Prime Minister Abe's cabinet but the faxes weren't legible so Takanohana had to send from Chiganoura's email which caused the uproar. #nailedit

    Sumo at Olympic Games

They were unsuccessful in convincing the Olympic committee to include sumo as an event, so there will be no medals.

I'd change the post, but getting the Czechs involved means this is an international conspiracy which is better gossip.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

If memory serves, Goeidou had a minor injury towards the end of his ozeki run but stuck it out for the wins (fighting spirit), and it was three or four tournaments before he started to look better, then he got injured again and started the on-again, off-again kadoban parade. His ozeki run included 2 wins over Hakuho, which is the * on his 32 win promotion. I don't think people appreciate the significance of that fact at that time. Hakuho lost a total of *nine times* in 2014, and 3 of those losses were to Goeidou, including twice during Goeidou's ozeki-run. Goiedou's consistency as a sekiwake made it pretty clear he could handle the promotion, and his record as ozeki since isn't the best but isn't the worst. I like to rag on him a bit because he's my wife's favorite rikishi, and I bought his tegata. And, frankly, he could be very good, if the good Goeidou could consistently show up. But hey, that's every rikishi with a history of injuries. tldr; he's not as good as first-half Kaio, but he's clearly better than second-half Kaio. Plus, he can beat Hakuho.

Hmm. Will Takatouriki be Takanoyama's inside track to the puroresu circuit..? STAY TUNED.

Is this going to turn into a "You can't quit because we're firing you!" schtick?

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Blast it, Goeidou. Now I'm super stoked to see him fight Hakuho this evening to keep those incredibly long yusho odds alive. Although, I mean, if Kakuryu is hurt (which seems likely, given he dropped three in a row) then Hakuho has this tournament already wrapped up, win or lose. But knowing this, SUPERGOU will probably show up to defeat the dai-yokozuna and break the zensho. Hang on. This needs more conspiracy. And then Kakuryu wasn't hurt, but was faking it to lull Hakuho into a false sense of security, and then he defeats Hakuho on the final day, catapulting Takayasu, Goeidou and Hakuho into a three-way playoff. All of which is intended to take the heat off of Orora's sudden intai. No cameras please.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

I think it was really smart of Goeidou to open up some space between himself and the yusho leader so that he could concentrate on doing good sumo. Gambare!

Aurora breaks the record and Aki weigh-in

It almost sounds like your trying to link Andre's weight with his demise, but we all know that Andre the giant suffered from a rare endocrine disorder that was basically his death sentence, right? I mean, it's possibly treatable now with hormone therapy being what it is, but that Andre's ~40 year age at the time was fairly bang on average for this condition, right?

Aurora breaks the record and Aki weigh-in

Another interview years later asked him about that drinking claim, and he mentioned that he had done something like that once on a dare, and that he didn't actually drink alcohol much (if at all) anymore. Edit: I tried to find the article - I thought it may have been the interview he did about flying back to Russia for his brother's wedding around...2013? but asahi shimbun no longer has the article.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was watching him wrestle last night with the kids and he looked like a walking corpse shuffling around the dohyo. I don't know if it's just that he was already 0-4 and looking to wrap things up, but I've never expected to see him yorikiri'd so easily.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

By the time it got to the Kise bout, I was half expecting him to call a torinaoshi between Kise and, like, Harumafuji or something.

Indeed. I recall Orora losing a match in the last few years by this exact set of circumstances. There was even an editorial cartoon.

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2018

Okay, I'm kind of jumbled in my brain as to what Kise's expectations are. The real idea is for Kise (if he comes back this tournament, which is seeming likely) to compete the full 15 days with a subjectively 'decent' performance, yes? It's the forum and Kise that's been clambering on about yusho or bust, right, while the koenkai/ydc is just happy with a strong return?

    Nagoya Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Hakuho could easily stretch his remaining career over the time required to reach the olympics. It's 11 tournaments away. The top division is so depleted, the Y/O ranks are going to be filled with guys that Hak can reasonably compete with for the foreseeable future. He just does what he's doing - stick it out to win a tournament or two a year, withdraw from the others early on, he'll be seen as generally competing without actually doing so all year long...

    Abema TV all sumo live

I've had occasional trouble with it, too, though I'm getting a "no internet connection" response. I found after I connect, I have to wait several minutes before attempting to connect to abema. Once or twice I've gotten what appears to be a refusal from Abema - I just switched the server I was connected to. There are lots and lots to choose from.
