  1. It is indeed complex and I know, that some of these guys will not become oyakata because of their own decision.... But anyway, I´ll give it a try and sorry for the graphics. Dewanoumi ichimon - 3 free kabu till 2013 + 4 free kabu till 2016; 3 toshiyori karikabu being afraid of retirement of owner/active rikishi (2 extra-ichimon - Musashimaru (I am still counting with Kyokutenho as future Oshima), Kakizoe (Takekaze), 1 intra-heya - Tochisakae (Tochiozan)); 6 active rikishi eligible for kabu by current standards (let´s forget Hamanishiki´s case, right;-)) (Miyabiyama (family business?), Bushuyama, Kitataiki, Goeido, Toyohibiki, Myogiryu) Nishonoseki ichimon - 3 free kabu till 2013 + 1 free kabu till 2016; 2 toshiyori karikabu being afraid of retirement of owner/active rikishi (both intra-ichimon - Tamanoshima (Wakanosato), Tamarikido (Kisenosato); 3 active rikishi eligible for kabu by current standards (Kotoshogiku, Yoshikaze, Tamaasuka) Kasugayama-Isegahama ichimon - 2 free kabu till 2013 + 2 free kabu till 2016; no nominees Tokitsukaze ichimon - 2 free kabu till 2013 + 0 free kabu till 2016; 2 toshiyori karikabu being afraid of retirement of owner/active rikishi (extra-ichimon - Shikishima (Aminishiki), intra-heya – Zaonishiki (Toyonoshima) – I know he won´t need any kabu by 2017, so we can omit him); 1 active rikishi eligible for kabu by current standards (Homasho) Takasago ichimon - 2 free kabu till 2013 + 0 free kabu till 2016; no nominees Takanohana et renegades ichimon - 0 free kabu till 2016; 1 active rikishi eligible for kabu by current standards (Wakakoyu) In total – 12 free kabu till 2013 + 7 free kabu till 2016; 9 toshiyori karikabu being afraid of retirement of owner/active rikishi ; 11 active rikishi eligible for kabu by current standards Does it makes sense? Edited thanks to Raishu´s following post
  2. This statement is more true than I thought it might be. After this wave of retirements and if my notes and thoughts are right, there should remain only four eligible (by results and nationality) guys without their own kabu (active rikishi + toshiyori karikabu oyakata). But if nobody quits earlier those further four open slots would be free only by April 2016.

    Takanoyama's training and diet

Unfortunately his recent success has not have too big impact on the popularity of Sumo in the Czech Republic ;-) . More than 99 % of Czechs wouldn´t know who Takanoyama or Pavel Bojar is as they would not get any news about him. Nevertheless those freaks who were interested in sumo before enjoy his results very much :-D .

Czech, Brazilian sumo coverage post Haru

Thanks for pointing this out Mark, I´ll try not to miss it. Anyway for Prague Daily Monitor, which I´ve never heard of before, reading English should be just fine (Reading book...) .

    Heisei Hopefuls - prospect watch

I simply love this topic. Thanks Asashosakari for the update. :-) Just a nitpick: from what you have posted it seems, that Fukugoriki makes it even five Tier 3 intais before Haru.

    Then & Now

I guess, that only Sakari, Tenho and Tochinonada will call it quits.

    Heisei Hopefuls - prospect watch

This time "not so shining" Tier 3 consisted of both Makushita (Asahisho) and Sandanme (Karatsuumi) Yusho winners with Asahisho moving to sekitorihood. Well done (In a state of confusion...) .

Thank you very much for your sum up, Asashosakari - very comprehensive and appreciated. But haven
  9. It is time to revitalize this evergreen topic (Clapping wildly...) . As was published by Muhomatsu as well as discussed into more detail in this topic, the Kyokai has announced that Katsunoura Oyakata (former Kitakachidoki) will be assuming the name Isenoumi and taking over the stable as of the 25th September 2011. The current Isenoumi Oyakata is to turn 65 on the 26th. BTW who is current owner of the Katsunoura kabu? The old Isenoumi moto-Fujinokawa?

    Aki 2011 banzuke

Thank you Fay. I am always looking forward for your picture banzuke. It is quite helpful especially with the recent inflow of sekitori newcomers. One nitpick: in the makuuchi banzuke there are missing Daido, Takanoyama and Kokkai.

    Takanoyama's training and diet

Before the Nagoya basho Takanoyama has visited the Czech Republic for the first time in 10 years. This obviously being possible thanks to his reaching of Juryo division and becoming sekitori. On June 14 he met Japanese ambassador in Prague Mr. Kunikata in his office. For those fluent in Czech here is the link on ambassy pages: http://www.cz.emb-japan.go.jp/cz/bunkanewscz.html. Thank you all for spending time on my oddity digging (First prize...) .

    Takashima beya folds

Warning: NUTS QUESTION (First prize...) : According to what is written above in this topic, Takashima beya merged with Kasugayama on June 16th due to the retirement of its last sumotori => Komori. But as this retirement came after Nagoya banzuke had been made, this Komori guy was still on the current banzuke (Jonidan 109e). Was he listed as a Takashima beya or Kasugayama beya member? And in more general manner: can the sumotori

    A Matter of Size

I saw the film with my wife. I was not that much impressed but there were some funny scenes. There were even some sumo related inaccuracies but I simply had to see it with my sumo interest and a friend acquiring citizenship in Izrael. My wife told me, it was the last time she went to see an unknown movie recommended by me ;-) Since someone I know was the sumo consultant to the movie, can you tell me sumo=related inaccuracies you found aside from the fact that it was amasumo and the rikishi had red mawashis on? I should have known you might have cooperated on the film (Blinking...). As I saw the movie two months ago, I don

  23. Thanks a lot for digging this up, Jonosuke. It is one of the less surprising shifts. So Kitazakura can go has gone intai in peace now. Edit due to news in other posts. (In a state of confusion...)
